I used to see a very overweight lady in bright pink bike shorts all the time. She was *always* riding up the same hill. Over the years she lost weight slowly but steadily, always buying new pink shorts (I have no idea where she got them). Of course I couldn't comment with anything other than a cheerful greeting (even saying 'good job' might have been construed as sarcastic, and I didn't want to be misunderstood), so I would avoid overtaking her if she was at the end of the climb and would respectfully try to pass her at low speed if she wasn't. Years later we were on a ride together and I recognized the pink shorts so I asked her if she was the same person. She told me the story: she rode in bright pink shorts because she didn't want to hide her weight -- and every new pair of shorts (smaller) was a small victory. Eventually she got to a size she was happy with and stayed there. A side note. I'm very fit, and not at all healthy. I'm not fat (on the contrary, I'm skeletally thin). I do get a lot of flak for it -- people who wouldn't ever comment on a 'fat' person's health seem to have no problem at all telling me that I need to 'eat a cheeseburger' or to seek help for my anorexia (when I tell them that I have chronic nausea and have a hard time eating, they tend to shut up.) Exercise makes many sick people better, fat people thinner, skinny people fitter, and nervous people more relaxed. Judgmental people, please go find something better to do.

I was a fat cyclist for a long time. I guarantee that you never had people throw bottles or food at you, try to run you off the road, or scream obscene things about your body at you while you're trying to improve your life. I appreciate that you weren't one of them. I'm also not trying to be a jerk by comparing the well-intended if sarcastic comments hurled at you about eating a cheeseburger (those comments usually come out of fear for your health, so hence, well intended), but there is nothing more demoralizing than finding the energy to slap on Lycra pants over your bulging thighs, hop on a bike, find your zen, only to be ridiculed and defeated by some twits in a car. There's ZERO love in that. They're doing it because they want you gone; they expect that you should hide at home in shame on your body. I'm not grateful that they did it, even if I did build a will of steel despite it, because no one deserves that. It made me even more apprehensive of people for a long, long time, and it made the psychology of weight loss that much harder to square (you have to get your mind right as your body changes because people react differently to you). That is why every single fat rider, gym-goer, runner, or just dog-walking person I see regularly, I always make it a point to tell them they are awesome. Trust me, bright pink bike shorts wouldn't have minded your encouragement.

Far from it. These days i hover around 260lbs easy. I hold it well because im 6'2" and did workout a LOT off and on in the past..BUT i would love to get down to 200lbs before i die..I just love cheeseburgers,fries,pizza,and other such goodies too much.. :D Thanks for the story..

@krispybacon16516 жыл бұрын
Cycling is also much kinder to the joints if you are overweight compared to something like running. Ride on.
@samanderson77456 жыл бұрын
Yes and no on this one. First, if you've got previously sore joints cycling can be easier on them, but only if you are on an appropriately sized bike that has been well fit to you. If not, you could be opening yourself up to a slew of other issues. Secondly, cycling is a lower impact sport. If you suffer from weak joints/bones running can possibly be more beneficial. Studies are showing that because of the impact of running bone density can possibly increase. I've got friends that are former national class/elite level cyclists that have very weak bones and numerous complications as a result, unfortunately. That said, since both are awesome forms of exercise why not combine the two and get into duathlon or add in swimming and start doing triathlons. That way you get the benefits of each while also giving yourself the option of one or two other sports to train at if you have an injury that impairs your ability to do only one of the sports? Still, ride on! Haha

I'm 56 and been riding for a few years now. This year I started in May at my heaviest, 108kg (6ft tall), after a change in the diet and keeping to 30km per day where possible I've lost 13kg in 3-1/2 months. I'm on target to get to 85kg in the next 3 months which is where is was in my early 20's. The diet is the key, I did pretty much the same but without the diet change last year and lost just 3 kgs. I normally stop riding in the winter which is the hard part because then you tend to want to eat more when you sat down & doing nothing so this year I will continue riding on the dry days where possible.

High five! I was 357..my averagy is 230 now, at 6.5". Whenever you reach a plateau in dieting, check your workouts. Only biking wont help, because it does barely build muscle. Doing only cardio won't do the trick. Some strength training comes in handy here. I'm not talking about bulking like a bodybuilder, but youst working out on regular basis, to keep and maintain some muscles and core strenght. Muscles will eat up your energy, and keep your metabolism running. 2 or 3 times a week, full body workout is enough. keep it up man, awesome achievement so far.

You'd be dropping a LOT of people I see on club rides with an 18 avg. But hey, I get your point too, it's totally fun to go ride with friends and not feel like the odd man out. I've been there (with friends, on my college team, and in group rides,) and true, it's always more enjoyable to be the hammer vs the nail. You'll get there. Ah, Leonard, a video *really* for me: as I've noted before, I'm older, heavier (fatter), in worse shape and only recently returned to cycling after about 30 yrs. Everything you said is true. I know the only yellow jersey I'll ever wear is the hi-vis one I got for on-road use, so I don't fret over equipment grams and ounces - a lot, anyway, LOL. I ballooned in weight, especially after 9-11 (I was at the WTC) then again, with a career-capping high-percentage travel series of projects. Now, retired, my "job" is to get healthy(ier) - I have some age-and-weight-related conditions that moderate my cycling, but I've been able to drop 32lbs since Jan 1st (while also putting on a few pounds of muscle). A good diet (content and quantity) is vital. Hills will never be my friends, and, as I live on a coastal plain (flat!) this aspect doesn't rear its ugly head too much, which is a situation in its own right (I need to seek out some sort of hills). I subscribe to your channel because in many ways you speak to my situation (I first found you by searching on "training zones"). Keep it up, and good luck on your Mallorca prep. Thanks! (P.S. - there's a limited-distribution film, "MAMIL - Middle-Aged Men in Lycra" that I'd like to see, which may be shown sometime somewhere around you [groups can sponsor a showing] - that explores this topic as well.)

Great vid. I'm a regular cyclist. I always think "great work" when I see someone overweight on a bike. They are doing the right thing. 80% diet, 20% exercise is an interesting figure. I do see a few regular cyclists who claim that they can't lose weight even though they are cycling but when you see what they eat, you realise why. Many people just don't understand how many calories are in foods. It's education required.
@hitchjack6 жыл бұрын
Leon Smith yeh the whole 80%/20% thing is touted a lot, and whilst I see the sentiment, weight loss is actually 100% creating a caloric deficit. Like you say, people generally have poor knowledge on calories they are consuming and burning.
@ronbell79206 жыл бұрын
Spot on Leon! Diet is mucho important for real weight loss, and it is no surprise. Food manufacturers, restaurant, basically all packaged foods are developed to make the consumer BUY MORE! Getting off that wagon after a lifetime of experience is hard for anyone to do. The average westerner consumes more than they burn and is self evident in our populations. I have worked in 3rd world countries that have better diets than we do. In fact we would "fight" to get to eat the fat! No fat people though, no processed foods either. Basically, one would have to exercise like an Olympic athlete to loose weight on the average western diet, and we are not!

I then got my first road bike and have been riding an average of 150-200 miles per week ever since. It took me about 18 months to lose 150 pounds (nearly 11 stone) and I've kept it off ever since. You are absolutely right about the way I see the cycling community treat larger cyclists. They are extremely helpful and supportive. Keep up the great work and never to forget to enjoy riding your bike. It's the best sort of therapy and it's absolutely free (to ride that is, we all know how expensive cycling can be :))

I think the reason most cyclists are positive toward overweight riders is because as soon as the road starts heading up we are all suffering. We love the road, we endure the pain, it's all about the bike. Chapeau

i started Mountainbiking 3 Years ago weighing 127kg with zero stamina. At first i rode 5-10km dying 1 or 2 times a week after a few weeks it went up to 20-30km then 60km and steeper hills on the weekends and it felt great ! you could see a real fast improvement. In the course of a about a year i lost 10-15kg doing nothing else then casually ride my bike 1-2 or 3 times a week for fun. the year after that i did my first 100km ride after that i did my first MTB Marathon probably being the heaviest guy in a field of about 5000 guys. I completed the marathon i was cooked but i did it and i was not last. Now iam in my 3rd year of constantly riding MTB. I have lost 25 kg so far but i dont really care about that anymore. I care about fun on the bike doing things i would not have imagined 3 years ago. Start riding give it a try ask your friends to ride with you challange yourself set yourself a crazy goal and start training towards a goal. Dont think about starting just start and see where it gets you. If you need help just PM me.

great video. i have the same view of overweight people i see in the pool. i think good on them for doing some exercise! plus who knows what somebody's starting point was - perhaps they're already lost 5 stone, or perhaps they put on lots of weight due to a medical condition... i think most overweight people worried about being judged if they get on a bike or go to the gym would be surprised at the positive way they are viewed for making the effort to improve their position...

When you start cycling there is always this one hill you have to stop and walk by pushing your bike. Some weeks later - you make it in first gear (and your pulse is close to an heart attack) Another weeks later - no heart attack anymore. And then you make it and see that you forgot to gear down ;-) Don't think about the final goal without setting little steps and milestones.
@taufikabidin4126 жыл бұрын
Tghat's the attitude! Although I'm slim, I think it's also because of the exercises and sports I do. Because whenever I eat wrong, I will be heavier and feel my strength gone faster. So it creates a positive cycle.

You have it exactly right on diet - it is 80% or more responsible for any overfat condition. (Its so much easier to refrain from bowl of ice cream than to run or ride it off.) Health = absence of disease. (Fat people can be perfectly healthy.) Fitness = ability to do something well and with ease; it should always come with an objective, i.e., fit for what? (Fat people can be "fit" at only a very few athletic or recreational activities. Lean people can be fit for anything, depending on their training. And to your example, Arnold was supremely fit for performing barbell and dumbbell exercises; whether he was fit for or at anything else is an open question.)

Till 36yr I actually could not understand how people became overweight. I was same weight since 18 mainly because of sport (during which I could not put on weight, to increase power for my sport, no matter how much I ate). Later I went to college then lived with a woman who could really cook, same time my job became non-physical & moved to a place that discouraged my habit of running, replaced by driving. My athlete’s palate remained & more than 2 stones of fat arrived in less than a year. Hope everyone has read the Glasgow study, especially if you really need to know why E-bikes are a deception except for the disabled. Not providing link for same reasoning.

I have to say that 5 years ago i was heavy. Almost a pig. I have a job now which i work my tail off. And i eat alot less. So, in the last 3 years i have probably lost 80 pounds. I bicycle alot when the weather allows. I use a TREK 7.2 hybrid. And this spring i bought a dutch Gaezelle tour popular 8 speed. I can't ride the drop handlo bar versions. It hurts my back and neck too much. I have 2 blown discs in my neck. It happens. I am not fast. I can go a very good distance. So, I view myself as the loaded dump truck in the slow lane. I am moving; just not as fast as you are.

Prequel: I'm fat, too (110kg @176cm, eg. a BMI of >35) A couple points: - cycling reduces some health risks, severely, even if you stay overweight. My hypertension, f'rex, practically went away a year after I started cycling to work (~20km per direction), I'm also no longer out of breath after walking up 5 flights of stairs - having a capable cardio system can reduce the amount of sweat one produces even whilst not doing sports. This is definitely an increase in quality of life for some of us (eg. me). - I tried snugly-fit cycling kit, and went back to shorts+t-shirt. For me, that's way more comfortable, and the increased aero resistance, well, it just means my daily commute uses up more calories. - since losing body weight is more important than losing bicycle weight for us overweight ones, one can save money and just use a sturdy regular bike (with mudguards, luggage racks and all those goodies), instead of a slim "road" bike - the penalty is much less noticeable than for lean folk - after I stopped comparing myself to others, everything got easier. Now the only one to beat is myself. I try to get faster each year, even if it's just a single %.

Ps I don't understand people who criticise heavy cyclists for how they look. Where is yhe positivity in that way of thinking. Cheers

I think it’s more like 95% diet and 5% exercise at this point. You can ride a lot and gain weight. And you can lose weight with zero exercise. In fact I’d venture to say that we should tell people the only way to lose weight is through diet. “Exercise” is something...else. Eat right above all else and ride/walk/run/swim/hike/skateboard, well just do that for fun. Unfortunately I’ve done neither diet or riding. I’m up 15 pounds over these last 5 weeks. Eating like a garbage can. Cycling is just not fun. Anyway, just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. Thanks for getting you’re perspective out here.

I fall into the obese category due to my height/weight ratio and age. People have told me, however, that I hide my weight well because they genuinely guess me as weighing less than what I actually do. However, I'll never let my weight detract me from riding. I love being on the saddle, pedaling hard and sweating out my stress and worries. Sure, I'll never win a road race either, but I don't ride for that.

Some say if you switch to a low-carb high-fat diet the fat will become so loose you will lose it by it simply falling off. LCHF diets overcome metabolic syndrome. Google those terms to see how to begin burning fat for energy while protecting muscle. Google Shawn Baker and Mikhaila Peterson too. And to leonardmlee, keep riding. At 60, I've done 15 years and 30,000 miles and plan to ride until they'll have to pry my bike's handlebars from my cold dead hands.

Numbzinger I don’t believe that a LCHF diet can be healthy. I’m personally doing a HCLF diet, eating good carbs, a lot, and never felt better than now. I’m gradually losing weight, slowly, but constantly.. with a HFLC diet maybe you will lose weight but you ‘ll be not healthy, since you start to be sick, and sick people tend to become slimmer..

One source of frustration for heavier people is the loss of spinning efficiency on hills, which can lead to exhausting grinding on low RPMs. You need to have a low gear available, which probably means a installing a compact crank, a long-cage derailleur, and a cassette that includes a 32-tooth cog, or even larger.

I have seen overweight cyclists on the Rideau Lakes Tour 350 k.m. ride in 2 days do quite well on the tour. Ottawa to Kingston Ontario in Early June they are probably more fit than the average person. Diet is important and traditionally high carb .diets have been the main stay. I am a bit overweight but changing my diet it does make for slower times doing Keto.at least initially

Big & heavy doesn't mean you're fat. it's a different thing.But fat riding a bicycle has more chance of a heart failure during a hard pedal. So, if you're fat & over weight, riding a bike is a good thing. But you have to be more careful when you're cycling.Most fat people that workout think they're strong and healthy, I agree on a strong part but not the healthy part.This video is good for encouraging people to get up and workout but it also makes people think that it's ok if you're fat and stay fat when you workout regulary.

You're not too fat for cycling, but you're not going to lose any significant weight by continuing to repeat an exercise that your body has become used to. In this case I would think running or something other aerobic activity would get more noticeable results in terms of weight loss.
