I have the 606 S2 AE’s. I love em. They are bright and to help that, yes change out the jumpers. I used the same speaker wire that connects to the speaker as jumpers: helps a lot. The other was, I use a Marantz AVR and run Audyssey, I found changing the Reference Offset Level from 0 to 10 made a huge improvement. Great review bro.

I own a pristine pair of vintage 1997 B&W Matrix 805s, which have a dead-neutral high end. The factory supplied response graphs show a deviation of +/- 1.5 db 55 Hz to 18 KHz. The 805s are some of the most “ honest” speakers I’ve listened to. Nothing is added, nothing is subtracted. It’s interesting that most high end B&W speakers from the late 70s through the 90s were designed this way. It seems that B&W has changed its direction by incorporating the “show-room” sound in its speakers(excluding their expensive 800 series).

bi wire could be nice for those with extensive dsp, for example add some delay to the tweeter usually the tweeter is in front of the woofer acoustically. i only have 2 channels in my dsp and use it between subwoofer and mains speakers. so i use two dac's and power amps to do this.

Hi Dex, I appreciate the kind words but I film these videos in a single take so what you're seeing is more of my real personality. I think it's important that people remember this is all supposed to be fun, I just say it in a way that is fairly aggressive, but that's also the kind of person I am :)

Thanks Nemo! Enjoy your reviews. Sounds like the treble drills many tiny holes in your ears in a matter of minutes in a "very refined" way 😂. Not for me, even though I'm in my upper 50s, I still can hear treble well enough to not like many Klipsch speakers, so I'm sure this one would be a nightmare for me LOL.

Thing is with the 600-series, which I have measured all of them: The treble isn't really all that elevated and "hot" like people say, it's withing the +/- 3dB as specified. I think it's just because it is so clear and resonance free, people mistake it for "hot".
@NemoPropaganda
@NemoPropaganda Жыл бұрын
I've seen it measured at +4dB which is not a small difference. Even if it was just +2dB, that is very noticeable to my ears.
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh Жыл бұрын
It's likely the off axis response plus you could get a 6db swing if it's ± 3db . Or, given the first order crossovers, you could be hearing lots of treble from the woofer if you sit directly in front.

*This.* Back in 1980 after hearing a friend's new KEF 104.5's, I sold my JBL Centuries for a pair of B&W DM14's after weeks of listening comparisons. Really my first foray into high end, and continued to be a fan for many years. It's kind of funny that B&W and Focal have slowly traded places in recent years! TBH I'm just not sold on B&W's these days, but certainly get it. But the formerly warm and polite British sound is now analytical, and IMHO too dry for my musical tastes. I personally think KEF's succeeded in finding that goldilocks zone as both brands were nearly interchangeable for quite some time. But if you hear _something_ you like in the B&W's, maybe try some warmer electronics. Back in the 90's when I bought my Thiels (which I still own), they were considered ear searing by some. IMHO due to the electronics they were paired with. Correctly matched, they have a stunning midrange clarity and holographic soundstage. I went through a _lot_ of components until I found that sweet spot (the McIntosh/Spectrals I demoed and fell in love with them with were unaffordable for me then, as now!). All part of the fun, isn't it?

As a b&w owner twice actully b&w can be very hot in tweeter i have not had 600 anniversary at my home just 683 s2 and 702 s2, i am currently using 702 s2 and they can be aggressive at times, but with enough power and right set up they can still get more balanced sounding even at higher levels, but will still lean against bright sound, but at least in my opinion when campared 603 anniversary with 702 s2, you get a lot more details and clarity with 702, but 702 s2 cost a fair bit more, but for me its worth the price difference, one thing i think is downside with 702 s2 is that they can lack a bit on low end, and they are very revealing, to me my previous 600 series speakers was much more forgiving to the music you listen to, but its nowhere as good sounding, good review as always👍,

I have these in a medium-sized office application, and agree with this assessment. It is bright, but incredibly clear. But two things: I’d gladly take this as opposed to any Bose bass addicted 16 year olds, and a small KEF sub gave me a bit more lower freq. response.

Last weekend, I did a test on a pair of $12000 silver signature 30 b&w speakers (absolute cadillac speakers), between the most heavy duty $1000 bi-wire cables I've ever seen and a single cut apart piece of composite video cable from the 90's (basically an old piece of copper string) ...and the piece of string won, I kid you not. The string- much cleaner, sounded amazing, any loss in bass could have been corrected with one click of tone control or EQ The bi-wire- slightly bigger sound, perhaps more sound stage in a stereo setup, but muddy, lacked definition, which is whole point I thought. but with those speakers, the 607 s2's, I might actually like the difference, because those things are just too siblant, they're excessive detail speakers imo, the bi-wire could chill those out a bit, and I'm pretty sure they're tuned for it. But I think EQing in lows and reducing highs is a much better scenario than adding eq'd highs which exposes compression sounds.

Not sure I got the name of the speaker right. Was it the Bowers & Wilkins 607 SE Anniversary Edition? Lol. But on a serious note, I have owned the 685 S1 and that one had some very nice qualities for metal music, for instance, but the treble was ear piercing at moderate to higher listening levels. I could get literal pain in my ears from a session. I can only imagine it has been toned down through out the iterations, but very interesting to hear that it is still there to a degree.

Like you said, the 607s are for 3 types of people : aged people, crazily over dampened room and peep that like their shit real spicy on the top end. The problem with the 607 is no treble control is going to tame that down as it peaks at 5500hz, goes down again the peaks again at 10500hz. B&W spent every single pound on the drivers for this model. The downside is they spent ALL their budget on the drivers and went kind of cheap everywhere else. I found a used pair of the 706 S2 that I'm running as computer speakers and the Carbon Domes are much more resolving AND much easier to live with. However, the 705 S2 with the tweeter pod on top run you back into super hot. I'd like to hear these speakers out of curiosity. I'm 59 years old and spent most of my 20s and into my 30s in rock bands. That is to say, I didn't always take care of my hearing. I know I've got some high end hearing loss going on (no. I'm not deaf). Perhaps the B&W 607 S2 (or something like it) would sound really good to me? Maybe they were marketed for Boomers such as myself? 🤔

I have these paired with the Leak Stereo 130 and using bi-wire on the speakers end. Bass becomes more present and extended. Beautifully controlled. And the treble keeps its detail and clarity. I had the smaller 11ls and they also were so open and detailed Whereas the B and Ws are cold, hard and somehow losing something that I cannot determine , they were almost like getting my teeth drilled in comparison .

@@NemoPropaganda sadly as you see throughout all the GR upgrades, spending more money on a speaker doesnt get you any better parts in the crossover and many still have responce issues. Bright speakers are a no go for me. Hi hats, symbols, voices but even sounds coming from an applauding audience don't sound real. It sounds impressive at first, then annoying but definitely not "real". But it's subjective, it might be right for some as you mentioned:) But then again I'd rather have a neutral speaker with no treble peaks at all and bring the treble up via tone controls or eq/dsp.

Bro, your video would've been 3 minutes shorter if you wouldn't have used the B&W 607s full name! Lol. My reasoning for biwiring is when I asked Brian at Cardas cables why people use biwiring on speakers and he told me because the jumpers are made from inferior metals like brass and steal and therefore limit your sound performance as a result of being not the best for conductivity. Makes sense to me as I never really thought about it like that. At the very least, get rid of those clips and use some copper jumpers. Does that make sense to you too? Did I offend you? If I did, it's your problem, not mine. Lol, kidding around with you. Another great video, thank you for your time!
