Now that's an interesting idea. If TfL actually did that and 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛'𝑡 publicise it, I wonder how long it would take folks to notice. I'm sure Jago, Geoff Marshall and Jay Foreman would spot it immediately but few others would see the difference. Just think what adding that little "e" would cost. By the time you alter and reprint all the maps and posters across the network, fix the giveaway Tube maps, re-programme all the ticketing gadgetry, alter the station signage(inside 𝒂𝒏𝒅 outside the station), before changing the destination boards on trains, there would be a whole lot of zeros after the £ sign.😁 I say, save the money and employ two full-time staff, one for each station, to explain the whole thing to all these confused travellers.

I notice that most cars on the Westway have one person in them. The Westway is an appalling abomination. It destroys the lives of anyone living near it. The double decker section over Harrow Rd is a real abomination. Insensitive 1960s planning really gone wrong. The most polluted part of western Europe is Marylebone Rd, where this motorway (the A40 (M)) slowly, with a huge tailback, disgorges it poison spurting machines into a Medieval/Victorian street pattern not designed or built to cope with motorway volumes of motor vehicles. A street pattern built for people not motor vehicles pouring out poison into the air. The Westway was an appalling idea to begin with. The insensitive way in which a motorway was built within yards of people's bedroom windows, shows the insensitivity to people of the governments of the time. *Westway was a huge mistake.* Time for it to go. @@glitch4465 put as simply as I can, anarchism is not about chaos or a lack of rules, it’s about creating a world without nonconsensual power structures (admittedly a very difficult and long-term task). To give smaller practical examples: workplace democracy, involvement in governing decisions, basically just being able to have a say in stuff that affects you, writ as large as possible. Now; if that’s a bit vague, that’s because very few anarchists actually agree with each other on how exactly anybody should go about trying to accomplish those goals. And there’s a few dozen different flavours, with distinct names, although most at least have enough overlap that they’ll cooperate when it comes to supporting practical, nowadays, political action. Plus, of course, I tried to limit myself to just one paragraph, where thousands of essays have been written for hundreds of years about the wrinkles and details. I suppose the last thing I will say is: some people have said Dwarf Fortress depicts an anarchist mode of society (at least before you get a king or mayor or whatever it is). Take from that what you will, haha
@glitch44653 жыл бұрын
@@kaitlyn__L How is that different to communism?
@kaitlyn__L3 жыл бұрын
@@glitch4465 well, there can certainly be overlap. They’re not mutually exclusive ideas. If one did both, that would be called anarcho-socialism. However, the two things are concerned with different things. One of the main differences can be the matter of centralisation. Socialism doesn’t have to involve central planning, but it’s not inherently opposed to it. But anarchists don’t like centralised systems, they prefer cooperative, distributed systems, like BitTorrent. Or a more modern example might be blockchains. Anarchism is concerned with power imbalances and the question of whether one can completely eliminate them. They don’t like states but they also don’t like smaller forms of self-perpetuating power, like parent teachers association boards. And so they don’t like centralised systems as they can be used to exert control. Socialism meanwhile is preoccupied specifically with the relationship between those who own businesses and those who work for them. Chiefly it is concerned with the fact that an employee must cost their employer less than the employee is making for the employer. Many socialists believe centralisation (aka nationalisation) is necessary, at least “at first”. (Anarchists believe states perpetuate themselves and “at first” would become “forever”.) Anarchists are also opposed to standing armies and other military things like that, while socialists again are not inherently anti- those. This is ultimately the main kind of tension you will see when it comes to arguments between the two groups, and what I alluded to with the dozens of flavours thing. For instance you will find socialists who are also anarchists, but you can also find anarchists who are staunchly devoted to free markets. There’s a huge amount of diversity of thought.

I recall at Waterloo there was a movie theatre which showed cartoons continuously. You could go there whilst waiting for the train home. Another day adventure was to go to the British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the War Museum. I also recall cycling from my home to Woking railway station where we would hide on the embankment at the junction of the Southern and Western region lines with a book of train numbers which we crossed off when we saw the train go by. They were different times then. I don’t think parents would allow that these days. We emigrated to Melbourne in 1965. Melbourne has an extensive tram network with all the lines terminating in the CBD. Keep up your good work.TFTT is a favourite channel.

Kind of reminds me of the case of Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas. Not so much the small water feature, but the street that runs along it. Along... both banks of it. Yes, through reasons lost to time, there are not one, not two, but three roads in Austin all named Shoal Creek. Two of them run along the creek itself, one on each bank, and the third appears seemingly at random. Infamously, there are multiple intersections of Shoal Creel and Shoal Creek, enough to make your GPS cry. It's been a long Austin tradition to avoid giving directions via Shoal Creek as much as possible, or if you must go to an address on that street you have to specify which one and often reference nearby landmarks. And while Shoal Creek is the most famous, it's not the only street in Austin with an evil twin. How many roads in London have intersections where they meet themselves?
@andrewgwilliam48313 жыл бұрын
I'd be surprised if any streets in London intersect with themselves like that, partly because a lot of roads change name along their length. For instance, near me there's a Romford Road that changes name several times before it reaches an intersection with another road which then itself becomes known as Romford Road a couple of miles away. Nobody local to any part of either road would ever be confused, and anyone travelling through from elsewhere would be using the route numbers anyway. London's big enough to potentially have examples I've never heard of, of course, but I suspect any historical cases have long since had their names changed.
@triviabuff56823 жыл бұрын
Before World War 2, the Post Office "persuaded" local authorities to change street names in many towns so that there was only one street with a particular name in each town. Because London is an amalgamation of many towns they had had to do this several times since the 1830s.

That whole edgeware road area of london is a bit out of place imo, one big long wide road with endless passing thru traffic, what's more pleasant is to walk adjacent to that big ugly westway and you end up at paddington and maybe b4 u get there u spot that canal down below👌(after paddington is towards ladbrook grove/kilburn lane) which is one of my favourite places to go for grilled chicken and chips (best in london) of course camden is in the other direction. @@highpath4776 To the west of Edgware Rd, it was vacant for a _long_ time. A whole row of shops (mainly hi-fi shops) were demolished, from the Police station to Church St, leaving a large plot. Nothing was done. The plot was turned into surface car parking. It was obviously some sort of financial angle as land in central London is worth a fortune. More likely land speculation - just leaving it then looking at the value rise by doing _nothing._ These money grabbers are a pest. Meanwhile the community suffer for 25 years, because of a few money making sods. For over ten years it remained like that. The new complex was also supposed to incorporate a shopping mall to replace the demolished shops. I am not sure if the near completed buildings will have shopping. The curved tower must be 30 floors high. Only because of the two Edgware Rd Tube stations they allowed so many apartments. The further west Paddington complexes were only given permission because of the two Edgware Rd stations on one side and Paddington on the other, with Warwick Ave to the north. From the demolition of the hi-fi shop until opened it will be around 25 years. Land Value Tax would have got a development there immediately. With Land Value Tax you pay the levy on the _value_ of the land whether a building is on it or not - it ignores what is on, or not on, the land. So if it is just land you still pay full rate as if a 100 floor building is on it. It sharpens the mind to get the land used efficiently. Singapore and HK tax land, being one of the keys to their economic success. The east of Edgware Rd to Lisson Grove is quite good with many renovations. The row of tatty looking shops on Edgware Rd gives the wrong impression. I would assume the shops would be renovated in time with an up market complex opposite attracting people.

@KasabianFan443 жыл бұрын
Bethnal Green is a particularly infuriating example, as the two stations are quite a distance apart from each other - so far apart, in fact, that there isn’t even an OSI between them! I would say that if they ever build a new Central line station at Shoreditch High Street (which doesn’t look very likely right now, but maybe after the Elizabeth line fully opens...), they can use that as an opportunity to rename Bethnal Green station as well (since they would need to replace the at-station vector diagrams anyway).

Starting and terminating these trains at Edgware Road has meant that all passengers from stations on the west side of the Circle, e.g. High Street Kensington, Notting Hill Gate and Bayswater, have lost their through services to and from places like Baker Street, King's Cross St. Pancras and Liverpool Street while at Paddington, anyone arriving off main line trains have a much longer walk to the H & C platforms to catch a through eastbound service although this has been somewhat offset now by the opening of the Elizabeth Line (unless, of course, you want to get to say Great Portland Street or Euston Square). Not only do passengers from say Notting Hill Gate to King's Cross have to relinquish their seats (provided they were lucky enough to secure one) at Edgware Road, there is no indication which one of Edgware Road's platforms the terminating Circle trains will go into and more often than not, people find they will have not only the inconvenience of changing but the entire passenger contents of the train will then have to toil en masse up and down steps and across the footbridge to then board a train that has come from Hammersmith and is no doubt packed to the rafters. And of course District Line trains terminate here too at a station never designed for use as a terminus so if you board one of those, you'll still have the same problem unless, of course, you relish the idea of going the long way round via Victoria and Embankment. Kind regards, David, Crouch End, N8

Fascinating. Particularly interested as I have worked in the office block behind the window cleaner statue near to the Circle line station. Quite happy with the common station names. Like these quirks.

Here in Madrid we had Atocha and Cercanías Atocha, they were two stations on the same line, which made it extra confusing for tourists (and me when I was new to the city) but now they've changed both names, Atocha Cercanías is now just Atocha (named after the train station it serves), and what was Atocha, now is Estación del Arte (Art's Station, because it's close to a whole bunch of museums)

Thanks again for sharing this video. And....another example of same name, different country. My friend used to live on Edgeware Road in Newtown, (with the extra’e’) Sydney Australia. I think Sydney’s Edgeware Road runs through 4 different areas - Enmore, Newtown and Marrickville and St Peters- but I may be mistaken. I’m about 10 minutes away in Camperdown. Newtown, St Peters and Marrickville have stations, Enmore is by bus. Anyway thanks again for all your entertaining content, I love it. Take care 🙂🐿 P.s I was going to say, there were lots of swindlers involved and then you mentioned it. I’m wondering just how many swindlers are which stations...but that’s just me.

Ah the Circle line...bane of everyone's existence. I confess to having made the rookie mistake of thinking the two Edgware Road stations were the same. Imagine our confusion when a helpful TFL employee told my mum and I that we'd have to walk outside and around the corner to get to the Circle line.

Definitely keep them both as Edgware Road to confuse tourists who haven't done their research (bitter rail worker here).

Oh, if you like stations with the same name, you'd love Chicago. The Chicago L has five stations named "Western", miles apart at different places along Western Avenue. Two of these are on the Blue Line (one being at Western and Milwaukee and the other being at Western and Congress). There are plenty of other stations sharing a name.

Nice little documentary. I don't think they should re-name the Bakerloo line station. Bothe serve the same area and I've never found it that confusing. It's clear on the underground diagram that they are seperate. The Bakerloo line Edgware Rd. is very much like South Kentish Town closed in 1922 and still there. I'd love to know about that and see behind it. Or, stations long since closed.

As an American who has never visited London, but who would like too, I plan to get confused during my entire trip by getting off and on at the wrong Edgeware station so I can come home and remark how well our own subways work in comparison. Not that I ride the subways frequently in America as so few cities have them here. I did ride the MARTA system in Atlanta, Georgia for a week or so on a business trip. I was impressed by it's efficiency.

Congrats on the 100K Jago! Other confusing dual-name stations have been renamed (Shepherds Bush, Wood Green) so maybe the problem is the historic frontages of both Edgware Roads with the names clearly displayed. For Strand (Aldwych) they solved the problem in draconian manner by closing it. Hadn't realised the two were so far apart, or that Edgware Road had been the Bakerloo terminus rather than Paddington (only for 6 years though, I see on consulting Wikipedia). The side entrance is intriguing; I couldn't really see what architectural style it was as it is all buried under ivy! Definitely worth seeing the Whitaker Wright and Yerkes videos for those who haven't previously.

I'm from NYC where we have 6 "86th Street" Stations, 2 of which are in Brooklyn, The other 4 in Manhattan. Now to be fair the 2 in Brooklyn are along West 86th Street and you even have part of the D Train Elevated run above it. The 86th Street in Manhattan is your typical East-West Upper Manhattan Street so it crosses paths with those 4 other station. One of which opened as recently as 2017 as part of "infamous" The Second Avenue Subway which deserves a video of it's own. (I'll be sure to link that in the descrip....wait a minute.) So 2 Edgware Roads? Not much a problem!

100K - Congrats! 6:53 "the moment you cross that threshold...." Here, in the U.S., we have a long history of 'living on the other side of the tracks'. The platform side of surface tracks was the 'good' side of town; the other side; not so much. It may be the same elsewhere, in the world, but that is beyond my pay grade.

Thanks Jago - this is a wonderful video (I know I had mentioned this recently). It's excellent, and well worth re-visiting; also the links you have provided to the other videos you have mentioned. I didn't realize there was such detail behind both Edgware Road stations, and that the Edgware Road on the Circle, District and Hammersmith and City Lines is the older of the two. Super interesting!! 👏🏾🌟👌 With reference to the re-naming of the Bakerloo Edgware Road - I think it would be a good idea for it to be given a name which reflects its locale; a bit like the re-naming of 'Shepherd's Bush' on the Hammersmith and City Line to 'Shepherd's Bush Market' (although I would have advocated leaving the name of the older station, and re-naming the newer Central Line station).

Yeah, having watched a bunch of your videos now, it was easy enough to figure out why this is a thing, given the lines these stations serve. The Bakerloo station is charming, I like those period features of its design a lot. Honestly, I think one of them should be renamed - I don't know which one or to what, but two stations really shouldn't share a name unless they are literally right next to one another, I guess. Also it's amazing what that blasted Westway has done to the areas it scythed into; you can see the effects of it right there. It should never have been built IMO. Great video!

That beastly 1967 fly-over is on the location of a cinema, on the same side of the road as the Bakerloo station, where part of the 1950 film, The Blue Lamp, was shot. It was outside that cinema where George Dixon, played by Jack Warner, was killed by the villain Tom Riley, played by Dirk Bogarde.

Liverpool had two stations named James Street. The current underground station in James St, and one on the now demolished Liverpool Overhead Railway, at the bottom of James St. They were yards apart. There was a suggestion to sink a lift shaft down from the elevated Overhead railway to the underground platforms beneath, to have passenger interconnection. It never happened, as they demolished the Liverpool Overhead Railway.

I think this must me the pair of stations which had me terribly confused when I was a little kid with a fascination with maps. Eventually, walking through the incredibly long (for a 7-year-old) pedestrian tunnels in certain other stations gave me a satisfying (but perhaps incorrect) solution: It was as good as one station, but you had to walk over-land instead of underground to change lines. Anyway, it's good to see how pretty the Bakerloo station is. Between that and the trains I remember from when I was little, I rather think I'd like to visit it.
