Great subject. Air pressure is a weird one. It shocked me that with 102PSI static you mentioned the tool was showing over pressure? (was hard to see for myself on the gauge). One of the reasons we havent tested 3/4" and 1" air is because even with an 80gal IR compressor and 1/2" air line, we havent been able to keep 90PSI in the tool while running. I'm talking a drop from 145psi static 25 feet away to 80-95 PSI inside the tool while running. And an oscillation of that pressure the longer the test and the more things we eliminated like the wall regulator being deleted and just connecting 3/4" wall cast iron to a 1/2" hose. Like a wave was splashing back and forth from the compressor to the gun. All this basically meant we couldn't be confident we'd match the manufacturer's testing ratings, so it wouldn't be an honest test for us to call them on their numbers. Real life testing is great though. Lab testing requires a lot of fiddly nonsense.

Always wondered why you don't do the bigger impacts, any plans to upgrade the compressor?

We are surprised also as we see a drop in the regulator gauge to about 96 psi when in full go mode and we figure the 1" OD air line has to see a drop also. Unless we have a bad IR 2146, I cannot explain it. We were full on red with the 2146. I fully get why you would not want to even try messing with these tools as there is so much to keep checking and testing along the way.

For the torque test channel you can add auxiliary air tanks to your compressor made by industrial air I have three of their 20 gallon auxiliary tanks to add to my 10 gallon harbor freight compressor with that set up it’s totally portable so that’s the advantage it has over a 60 gallon or a 80 gallon stationary air compressor and the performance should be similar to a 60 gallon compressor

@@WorkshopAddict It would be interesting to add a gauge at the inlet of the tool to actually measure those pressures, as a check of the IR gauge. Painters do that all the time. Perhaps the IR gauge is measuring peak pressure before the trigger is pulled, then not resetting as the tool is drawing down line pressure. The seals inside the tool need to cope with the maximum static line pressure, which will undoubtedly fall off as the tool pulls air. I like the real world comparison, since most of us don't have fancy auxiliary tanks.

I have a 2 stage Speedaire 80 gallon rated around 24cfm set to top at 175 psi. I piggy backed 2 little Harbor Freight 30 gallon compressors in my system. As well as another 30 gallon bare tank. Thats 90 more gallons storage and another roughly 20 cfm coming in. I can get get a gauge on the tool (either of my 2850s, short or long) hold really close to 160psi while working unless I just hammer for like a minute straight. Those smaller compressors kick in when the big one falls below 145psi, or in other words the whole system actually. Then Duke Energy grins ear to ear. I modded them to run on up to 175psi, the tanks are rated like 250psi. But it can recover fast as you will milk it. Now pressure goes down during that process of recovery unless you quit with the tool if its maxed. But if its working normally you won'tloose pressure, you will recover. Storage is king. It dont matter if you have 200 psi and only 60 gallons of storage, only its first lick or two will be near full potential.

I have the Proto J199WP I wonder how it would stack up against what you have in this video my HarborFreight item 62396 doesn’t require a lot of air to work on a 10 gallon air compressor but when I hook up a 3/4 jackhammer hose things do get kind of crazy with a 70 gallon air compressor

That AirCat 1870-p is a monster. Ive had mine for a little over a year now and it laughs at my 1"d handle milwaukee and is a crap ton lighter. Also didn't cost $1600 either!

I run my 2850s both and my 2146q all at about 160psi and I only get down to 1/2" right at the beginning of each individual hose. My 2146q does not go in the red. But if I use too little air it will. I think in the literature it stated that too little air was as harmful to the hammers as too much, so maybe thats what its telling you, and me when I under power it. For total disclosure, I do have 90 gallons extra storage and 2 smaller single stage compressors piggybacked in. I primarily work on heavy equipment from 20 tons on up. I have seen IR break many a CP or AirCat guys heart over the years. As far as batteries go. For the price range you won't beat Milwaukee, I don't think you will anyway because I have already sent the Snap On guy back to his truck with his way overpriced battery tools and his tail between his legs. I have heard good things about those IR battery powered 1 inch guns but no personal experience. And as far as the air guns go I have never seen an IR that was 3/4 or up that didn't love more and more air. You may have to rebuild them a little sooner but I would rather do that than be breaking a 1 inch snap on pull handle with a 5 foot pipe on it jumping up and down in this 100 degree heat we been having.

Do you have any experience with air-cat 1994 the specs saying it’s the most powerful compared to the IR 2850max. Or have you ever wanted more power than the Ir 2850 had? Thanks! @WorkshopAddict

I just got the ingersoll 3/4, and it was very disappointing. I tried to take nuts off, and it wouldn't do anything. I tired a friend's snapon 3/4, and it zipped the right off and thought I should try my 1/2 and they came off. I think it was defective, so I sent it back off to be looked at or rebuilt after 2 weeks of having it. And the nuts were supposed to be rate for 350 ft/lbs, so i figure at most if someone over tightened them, they would be around 500 ft/lbs. Which is still way underrated for that gun.

Where did you purchase that new IR 3/4 with the extended anvil? I can't find any online..
@irtoolscom
@irtoolscom 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! At this time we have a few options for extended anvils for the 2146 Series. You can purchase the product options of a 2146Q1MAX-6, as the tool with a 6” anvil, or the 2146Q1MAX-3, which is the tool a 3” anvil option. For the anvil as a standalone part, you can select the options of part number 2145-A626-3 (3”) OR 2146-A626-6 for our 6” option. For anything additional, please take a look at the link (www.ingersollrand.com/en-us/power-tools/impact-wrenches/2146max). At the bottom of the page you’ll see a Model Specifications or Parts and Service Tab to hopefully assist with any other questions. This is air tool 101 basics or 'should be' sadly its not. You MUST be testing 'working pressure' AT THE TOOL with a gauge. Static pressure means next to nothing the second you squeeze the trigger on any air tool. Many folks think manufacturers are specifying 90psi static which is beyond far from the truth. Yet many YT air tool reviewers don't grasp this basic concept.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The analogy is voltage drop on an electrical line, every point of resistance will cause drop, but it's only visible when air is flowing. The problem with a gauge at the end device is the way it will be considered over-pressure before the trigger is pulled. So, the tool needs to be able to tolerate static pressure of ~150 psi before the trigger is pulled. It would be no good to start blowing seals before air starts flowing.

I dont care for Ingersoll Rand since they moved their headquarters to Bermuda and then Iteland to avoid corporate taxes. I still have to oay taxes on their products and my income and they get to skate free. They also want the US government to uphold their patents and force other countries to comply.

What size hose are you using? In the industrial world we use ¾ air hose usually regulated to 100 psi with unlimited air. Most non industrial air hoses are either ¼ or ⅜. I was just wondering how much difference that would make.
