Are you too old to learn English? How old are you? Has someone told you are too old to learn English? What have you heard about children and adults learning English?

When I was eight years old and started learning my first foreign language, I thought I would master it in five or six years. But after five or six years, I realized I would need another ten. By the time I turned twenty-five, I understood that learning a foreign language is a lifelong journey. However, if you want to become fluent, you should start learning it as early as possible.

The sensitivity to words in the native language is much higher than in the second language. A person cannot improve this sensitivity if he is not young... A lifelong journey? That is something of an illusion, considering the sensitivity that cannot be improved by learning new words.

Hello Tanya I have watched this video, fortunately. My age 76. I'm also sudying Italian, my maternal grandparents language. Obviously we, as an adults, ar much more conscious of fear, scareful at making mistakes and being seen as ridiculous speakers. It's a question of responsibility, in my opinion, setting a difference between children and adults. Besides, we decide what to do, what to learn and this is a relevant point to take in mind. Last but not least our mind grows potentially at feeding them with knew knowledges. I have written 8 books, but only one short tale for kids in English. I hope to have a good command of English to write stories in that idiom. Agradecida como siempre me despido con un abrazo para ti, Tanya. Susana de Argentina.

English is my fourth language, which I started to learn at the age of 34, and I used it a lot in English speaking country. I have recorded conversations with native speakers in my phone. These are not conversations with friends. If someone has a second language, it must be close to the native level, otherwise he could not always defend his opinion with the same arguments as native speakers. There would be a big difference between a person who learned English as a second language in school and one who did not. If you find a person without school who has a good level of English and has proven that not only writing comments under the control of chat gpt, you are a lucky person.
@EnglishCoach3Ts3 ай бұрын
While I understand what you are saying about being able to defend your opinion, it is also so very important to have conversations even if your level is much lower. It's very impressive that English is your fourth language. What are your first 3 languages?
@vogditis3 ай бұрын
@@EnglishCoach3Ts I was born as a child in the Soviet Union and had TV channels at home, one in Latvian and one in Russian, plus ten years in school learning Russian as a second language. I have the highest possible level of a second language. At the same time, I understand that native Russian is better than my second language. In school, I learned German as a third language. This language is the opposite to my Russian, it is quite a weak language because of the closed type of the country. My English will be weaker than my German because I acquired it much later than German and I did not learn it in any school. In the Soviet Union, they started showing American movies that were in two languages. These movies were in Russian, but English remained. I was 16-17 years old, and I did not even notice how my brain was picking up a new language. The fifth language is the language of my parents, which I left in my childhood. I understand it, but I have not tried to speak it. I came to Ireland at the age of 34, and suddenly it turned out that I understood English and I did not know it before. In the beginning, I only understood and could not speak a word. "The nicest thing"(sarcasm) is that American English does not really sound like Irish.
@vogditis3 ай бұрын
@@EnglishCoach3Ts The first language starts at the age of 1 year. This is the main reason why the second language must be started as early as possible. Adults have problems to maintain the level in the second language without using it in this linguistic environment, but I do not call it learning. I think I have done something impossible at my age, I have breathed new life into my youth language, but I cannot impress anyone because my English is at a poor level compared to a childhood second language.

I'm 54 and to be honest I don't think there a specific age to learn whatever we want to learn. Obviously there are some pros and cons when you learn at a young age you lear faster but you don't have much time. On the other hand if you learn a something when you are retired you'll learn slower but you can put in more time on your english learning journey. But as I always say if you really have your heart set on learning english obsviously you'll learn. Maybe it will be a longer process but beleive or not you 'll achive your goal.
