The smooooth tone of Tony Hadley there. They went through a few variations in sound before hitting on this (a UK chart-topper in 1983) and you might have had a completely different impression of them if you'd tuned into their first hit 'To cut a long story short' - powered by a heavy duty synth riff... and tartan...

"True" was sampled later in a mega pop/rap hit "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" by PM Dawn in the early 90's. The twin brothers of Spandau Ballet Gary and Martin Kemp also dabbled in acting, portraying the twin British gangsters the Krays in the 1990 movie "The Krays", and Martin starred alongside Alyssa Milano in the 1995 movie "Embrace of the Vampire".

Mr. Video "True" is from 1983, "I want it that way" is from 1999 :-) Spandau Ballet are: Tony Hadley (vocals, yes it is HIS voice), the brothers Martin (bass guitar) and Gary Kemp piano and guitar, John Keeble on drums and Steve Norman saxophone. There has not been a profitable reunion like so many other 80's bands because Tony Hadley wants his distance from the others.
@MRoyClark

Great reaction! Spandau Ballet (pronounce span-DOW bal-AY) was a five-man band. Vocalist, Tony Hadley was definitely pretty beefy for a popstar. Brothers Martin and Gary Kemp were the core of the band, and Gary wrote most of their songs. They also had homeboy on drums and the cutie on saxophone. "True" (1983/US#4, UK#1) was their only major US hit, but they had a run of chart success in the UK from 1980-86. Their first single, "To Cut a Long Story Short" (1980/UK#5) was more angular and synthetic. Very New Romantic (or as we tend to say in the US "New Wave"), but it's a great, upbeat Synthpop ditty. Within a year, they had begun to change their sound drastically and adopted a more Funk-oriented, organic approach with "Chant No.1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)" (1981/UK#3). By the time they release "Lifeline" (1982/UK#7) they had really smoothed out the rough edges and seemed to be going for a pure Pop approach to compete with acts like ABC and Culture Club whose Postpunk roots were barely perceptible. After having a gigantic, international hit with "True", they started to aim for a more anthemic sound, suited for stadiums and arenas, and "Gold" (1983/US#29, UK#2) got that ball rolling. They have a number of other hits, some more memorable than others. But "True" was the peak of their powers, it seems.

Ohh, I thought that you were never going to react to Spandau Ballet (/ˈspændaʊ ˈbæleɪ/ SPAN-dow BAL-ay), they were an English pop band formed in Islington, London, in 1979, one of the best groups of the 80's New wave/New romantics. The band's classic line-up featured Gary Kemp on guitar, synthesiser and backing vocals, his brother Martin Kemp on bass, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble. I love this group along with Simply Red, Tears for fears, A-ha, Police, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Depeche mode, The Cure, (you reacted to some of these groups) and so many others. What a wonderful decade!!! I would recomend you "Gold", "Only when you leave" and "Through the barricades", but one of their best songs, they have a lots, is "Be free wtih your love" (you won't stop dancing). PLEASE, react to this four songs when you can. Thank you for being like you are, don't change. :) I love your channel, it's brilliant!!. Greetings from Spain. :D

Yeah! The closest but far less successful rivals to Duran Duran, and somehow these never took off in the US from what I understand. But this song is one of those sampled by PM Dawn in the early 90s in Set Adrift On Memory Bliss, with their mate George Michael's song (RIP my angel) Father Figure being sampled in their Looking Through Patient Eyes. I used to love Spandau, but this song for all it's glory was one of those that was SOOOOO overplayed on the radio and everywhere that I ended up tired of hearing it. Beyond The Barricades, Gold and Only When You Leave are good ones from the. Also, it was a 4 man band and included brothers Martin and Gary Kemp both of whom have had stints as actors, Gary was Whitney's (RIP) slimy agent in The Bodyguard! TFS :)
