Fun fact: the SMG 37 is a one handed weapon. It can be used with the ballistic shield and can two shot devastators with headshots. Just tap fire to get your shots on target. You can also run a support weapon with this setup as the shield counts as a backpack item.

You can do this with the smg primary weapon, too. Only primary so far that allows for it. It's bullet damage is actually slightly higher than the starting rifle, too. But, it eats through ammo faster. All of the 1handed weapons work this way.

If you go to HUD setting and put your aiming as "ON" instead of "DYNAMIC" you don't have to blind fire as the aim icons will remain on screen at all times.

I wonder what an eye tracker would show for me, cause sometimes my eyes just glaze over lol. Due to my real world training and choice of career, I am constantly considering spatial awareness and trying to see behind me and around corners, scanning for the next bad guy.

More importantly, it does the same damage per shot as the starter pistol, but has double the magazine capacity. Set it to single shot mode and use it to clear stray scavengers and juvenile hunters instead of eating a burst or your primary ammo on them.

Mind the starting pistol is still really good weapon. One of the things I respect about the Devs is that they did not start you with shit weapons to make you spend money in the shop on decent starting loadout. Both the starting pistol and rifle are viable even on highest difficulty.

If it had more reserve ammo it would make sense, but it doesn't. just like how the defender is a direct upgrade to the base AR, the smg pistol is a straight upgrade to the starter pistol.

At level 20 and 30 hours in it started to become easier. While you get told what the main mission is and get a simple "do this" prompt, helldivers isn´t a game that takes you by the hand and shows you everything in detail. On one hand that can make it a little hard at first, on the other it makes the game so much more fun because all the side missions really make you think and work for them. I infinitely prefer that over the more usual games that talk to you like you are in special needs class. Same for all the mechanics. The rush you get when realising and figuring something out on your own is just great. Especially if it happens during a mission and your are really in the game at the moment.I have had a whole bunch of "fuck it let´s try this. Wait... that ACTUALLY does work?!" moments with this game. It´s awesome that it let´s you do stuff other games never would. One was early on, and many others had that one too, when I could see a broadcast tower from across the map. I had the anti-tank and had a moment of "I wanna shoot it". Cut to me being flabbergastered when the thing wen`t down after hitting it from half way across the map. Or when destroing an enemy location. Withe a bunch of enemies in it and being hard pressed to call in a hellbomb on it. I just yeeted the 380mm barrage and and eagle strike on that airbase and again, "main objective completed". Like, no other mainstream game would let you just blast the objective during a bomb laying mission to the bedrock and count that. No, those would force you to go inside and make you place the bomb. You cannot just do your own thing and destroy it by other means after all, that`s not in the mission description. That fact alone, that you actually can be creative and solve missions in many ways and think up tactics to deal with them yourself makes it one of my favourite games ever. And also the first game that really got me to play again after some years.

My advice for the machine pistol is switch to single fire when killing small bugs. It is a great way to conserve ammo for your primary weapons. One mag can easily kill 16-20 small bugs in semi auto.

Pro tip for the arc thrower, you can use a similar tactic to make it significantly easier to kill hordes that are on top of you. ADSing with the arc thrower in general just seems inferior since it doesn't matter how accurate you are, as long as you are pointing generally in that direction at that thing, it will hit if you are within range.

this is actually a good tip, i'll share on my dives :) Also, one I've seen people do on their missions is quickly popping the annoying lamps that flare when you use some terminals, they reduce visibility and make enemies spot you easier im sure, so one bullet investment to remove those is worth it most times

I did actually know this. All thanks to Hunters, and panicking with no time to reload. I use the base handgun and not only have I found that it does pierce through enemies to hit ones behind them, but also that the low recoil and low sway from moving makes it decent for killing chainsaw hand bastards.

the spore trick is hilarious to do, if you set it up right you can launch incredible distances, did it to get to an objective faster and landed right next to a tank that was harrassing another helldiver and once i got up i destroyed it for them

I'm surprised that you didn't immediately notice this. All it takes to figure this out is to be in a situation where you are running away from a melee enemy, your primary's mag is empty, and you try to shoot at them with your secondary while running away.

My favorite load out is using the shield backpack with the one handed smg. Holds the shield up while you aim and lets you shoot. Absolutely eat through automitons this way. More one handed weapons please
