Tool doesn’t have any bad albums. The core elements remain consistent throughout their discography, but the evolution from anger to enlightened to the final culmination of it all in Fear Innoculum is an awesome journey. This album is considered their "least popular", but it's still incredible. Listening to Wings 1&2 after you fully understand the relationship with his mother is hard. Maynard said if he had to do it all over, he wouldn't have released them. It's too raw and personal and hasn't been played live in a long time. Rosetta Stoned took me a while to wrap my brain around initially, but now it's one of my favorite songs off this album. Jambi is in reference to the Genie off "Pee Wee's Playhouse". The Pot is all about hypocrisy and a corrupt judiciary. As people have already explained Right in Two I'm not going to get into it further. Glad you enjoyed it. I have been listening to Ænema a lot recently since the fires in California. The self titled song off the album will let you know how Maynard feels about Los Angeles. (they formed as a band there initially). Maynard is a strange dude. He's prior Army, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and owns a vinyard. If you want to check out his other bands, they're A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Maynard has described Tool as his Masculine, A Perfect Circle as his Feminine, and Puscifer as his Libido. Lol. Danny the drummer is regarded as one of the greatest to ever do it. Once you finally listen to Fear Innoculum, you need to do the drum cam video for "Pneuma". It's insane. Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater(another God of drumming) had to learn Pneuma for a Drumeo video and it frustrated him to no end because it was so complex with it's constantly shifting time signatures he was having a hard time figuring it out. Sorry for the rant. The Tool Army is filled with autistic nerds.😂

"Wings for Marie" is EXACTLY therapy for Maynard(vocalist)its about his mother, Judith Marie(A Perfect Circle has a song called "Judith")(also another one of Maynards bands)Judith Marie who was paralyzed for 10,000 days(album title and song title) but was solid in her faith and Maynard couldnt understand how she was so solid in her faith being paralyzed for 10000 days and it references her standing at the gates of heaven shaking her fist yelling im home take me in

King, ill give u a breakdown of theor albums real quick; Opiate(EP)- great intro being in the 90's due to the heavier angry tones and lyrics Undertoe- debut album, very aggressive in ur face lyrics/riffs/styling Ænima- is more of a transitional album from the aggressive in ur face to the more spiritual and modern TOOL sound 10,000 Days- well u know now Lateralus- prolly one of the most influencial lyrically and musically of any modern album in the sense that its transcendent in lyrics and technical masterful in musical styling(i have Lateralus & 10,000 Days out of order) Fear Innoculum- trult one of the most immaculate pieces of music ive personally ever heard but an extremely spiritual and primal TOOL album

I will be editing this as I watch For Jambi, I say it is more simple then that. He got famous, got riches and everything. However, he would wish it all away if it were to drive him from someone he loves. Specifically his son but that is more outside info you get rather then from the song itself. Also, the solo was done with a tube in the mouth (talk box). Guitar signal goes through the amp and then into a tube. The player stands in front of a mic and moves the mouth to change how the guitar sounds. I also love watching people listen to Jambi due to it being, in my opinion, the hardest song to follow rhythmically. The song is mostly in 9/8 (if you don't know what that means don't worry) but in Jambi they REALLY mess with the ways you can make 9. 3+3+3, 4+5, 3/4+3/8, 3/8+3/4, etc. Combine that with different instruments playing different combinations and it is the most difficult song to nod to. In Relation to Wings pt. 1 and 2. Maynard (the writer and singer) HATES religion. As for god, we will get to that. Wings relates to his mother Judith Marie. She was paralyzed in an accident and was alive for ~10000 days between her being paralyzed and passing away. In this time she became heavily religious and Maynard did not like that. He believed that any god that would allow his wonderful mother to suffer like that was a terrible one. You can see this in "Judith" by Perfect Circle (another band Maynard made and sings in). In 10000 days, it was after she passed away and he wrote the song very religious and "positive" in relation to god and Christianity to respect his mothers passing. There is more story related to the "Siblings" (other church go-ers) but I don't want to make this too long. Rosetta is my personal favorite tool song but it is one of those songs people either love or hate. But to the story. Hoffman is the inventor of LSD, you get 1 guess why that is important. The song is apparently about a trip a friend of the band had and told them about. Also, I despise weed and drugs in general but in the song the guy is tripping on 4 different drugs, not just weed and it is not the weed that is the problem there lol. Right in Two shows something about how Maynard writes. Even tho he is against religion and isn't the biggest fan of the divine, he writes a lot with the ideas of it. He makes religious references (he grew up in a religious household afterall) and Right in Two is a great song about humans being selfish using a perspective I have never seen in another song before.

Great video man! You instantly gained my subscription with your analysis and ability to vibe while pondering the lyrics simultaneously. Do you like reacting to smaller bands or bigger established artists? Your opinion and breakdown of music would be a great insight for bands getting their feet under them but I respect just sticking with big names if you prefer that.

TOOL definitely not religious, but much of their music is spiritual. 2 different things. Maynard the vocalist has struggled with the idea of religion despite having a devout believer of a mother, Judith Marie. The album title refers to the length of time Maynard's mother spent paralyzed, until her passing. The 2 "Wings For Marie" songs are Maynard's message to his mother, postmortem. Basically saying that through her tribulations she remained faithful, unbending and deserved her wings upon her arrival at the gates of heaven. He also calls out the "congregation" of her peers who he claims couldn't hold a light to her faith. Basically an emotional goodbye to his mother that recognized her faith and demanded she be rewarded for it, despite not believing himself. His mother is the topic of multiple songs across all of his bands.

His mother's church congregation took the position that God had punished Judith Marie for something she'd done wrong with that stroke, a big part of Maynard's rage at organized religion. His stepfather was also abusive, which is why Maynard finished growing up in his grandparent's care, but she was stuck with him, paralyzed, and receiving judgement at the church where she went for refuge. This album is Incredible therapy.

"It's like 2 vibes in one." It's actually is because the 3 musicians write the music and then hand it off to Maynard who writes and composes around them. Try and block out Maynard and focus on Adam, Justin and Danny. Now imagine them in a studio making that stuff up. Crazy. Great reaction! 🌀

The writing process is incredible, and unique, Maynard the singer, writes the lyrics mostly after the other members hash out their stuff....over the course of nearly a decade per album.

The band tirelessly and meticulously spends time composing the music, which has often been a point of contention. All of these songs are of course played live across the span of their careers. The most recent album release (2019) was 13 years in the making and is yet another example of the band's musical evolution. Somehow at an average age of 60, the mastery of their craft continues to ascend. They are still quite the spectacle to see live. I can't recommend the experience enough.

The bit in those lyrics in Rosetta Stoned where it reads "hallelujah" is incorrect. He actually says "I believe you" and then more nondescript sounds.

The deeply tribal aspect of the drumming compounds the primal nature of Right in Two. He's clearly talking about prehistoric man, i.e. Monkeys! Sub'd for your Tool journey! You do you, if you wanna close your eyes and vibe then that's exactly what you should do!! We want your natural reaction, don't ever feel like you need to be talking cause that's not what this music is about, it demands your full attention! Oh yeah, forgot: It's "Cut and Divide it all Right in Two" not "Gotta divide it ..Wrong lyrics on so many of these!

The monkey part your referring to is evolution of man. It refers to us transferring from apes into man and fighting instead of coming together. That's why it had the bingo feel to it to take you back in time when things were simple.

Judith Marie is his mom. When Maynard was 11, she had an aneurism. 10000 days later she died. She was very religious. I believe Tool is spiritual but not religious.

Yeah, in fact the rage Maynard had towards organized religion is pretty explicit in the early works. He found his spirituality outside of religion as he got older.

He’s saying to the angels we’re all like uncivilized violent animals even though God gave us reasoning minds, the whole Right in Two song is about the greedy selfish nature of humans, how we will divide or fight rather than all come together as one and all benefit from God’s gifts. Calling us monkeys is like an evolutionary reference as in the old argument did we evolve from apes, we certainly wouldn’t have evolved from giraffes as you said. Believe me Maynard didn’t mean it the way you, as a person of color, might take it. Nothing racist or cultural ha, in anthropology ALL humans are seen as evolving from a more primitive species. But the angels argue against that notion too with talk of Eden and being created as fully human from the start, so Maynard is contrasting the religious with the scientific approach and to me that’s part of what Maynard wanted us to ponder, just where this tendency to warlike nature came from.

When you say it’s their “worst” album you need to add the words “to me”. You’re smart enough to realize every song, album or artist is all subjective and can mean nothing or everything to different people. They might have not resonated with you, but to ME they definitely connected with me and almost every song sounded like a great album and I appreciate that Tool can give us content that can sound like Tool and different at the same time. With all due respect, 10,000 days is not a bad album to me and I can really listen to them over and over
