I Had this album when it was new in '96. Had no idea what I was hearing, never really got into them. Flash forward to 2020 and I hear 'Lateralus' for the first time 🤯. I was hooked and just went to my first tool concert on Jan 15th for Adam's birthday (tool's guitarist) . Tool is musical art at its finest, the tool army loves watching people discover tool for the first time. If you tool they will come.

Great reaction. For the next Tool Song I recommend listening to Parabol/Parabola but make sure you don't listen to them in separate videos. They are one song and you don't want to screw up the transition. I wouldn't recommend the music video at first because it's EXTREMELY distracting but it's also really cool and has both the songs together. There are a couple lyric videos out there or you say screw it and watch the music video. It's an incredible song.

If that was your very first Tool experience: very well done. Definitely not dipping your toes in. The Ænema track can be a little "harsh" on the ears of the uninitiated. Tool uses their instruments to express feeling, emotion and ideas as much as they do through lyrics. They're masters at both. It'd be great if you continue to explore more of their music. I'll watch and cheer you on. ✌️

Not sure if this is mentioned below or not but this is based on a comedy skit by the late Bill Hicks called Arizona Bay. He basically talks about how he hates the superficialness of LA etc etc...and that it California should just be washed away leaving "Arizona Bay". I've seen that the song more portrays a more global look towards the idea. Great reaction, and keep going the rabbit hole goes deep.

Great first experience to TOOL, Sara; especially since this is one of their more straightforward songs. I want to get back to the song in just a moment. First, I just want to give you a quick suggestion. When you are able and ready to listen to their song Pneuma, make sure to watch the Live Danny Carey drum cam view video. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED IN THE LEAST! Now, I just wanted to give you a little more background to this song (and album) to let your mind chew on. Although, TOOL is listed as a band from Los Angeles, they were only formed there. The lead singer, Maynard James Keenan, moved to Arizona because he couldn't stand the superficial, hypocritical culture in L.A. The album, especially this song, was written as an homage to a friend of the band, the comedian Bill Hicks who died from cancer. In a famous stand-up bit from Bill Hicks, he expresses how he would like to see L.A. be swept into the Pacific Ocean by some natural disaster. With L.A. gone, a formerly land-locked state would now have oceanfront property and this new body of water would be Arizona's bay, hence Arizona Bay. Again, Maynard's lyrics were really a dedication to his friend Bill Hicks but, as all TOOL songs, the lyrics are so layered, filled with double entendres, and thought provoking that you would never stop gleaning new insight into the lyrics, music, and, most importantly, your life. WELCOME TO THE TOOL ARMY! GET READY FOR THE MOST ENLIGHTENING MUSICAL RIDE YOU WILL EVER BE ON!
@jek48372 жыл бұрын
Never watch the live video of Pneuma first. You should have heard the studio version to fully appreciate the live video next.

@jek 48 My apologies, jek 48. I didn't mean to give the impression that I saw the video before listening to the album the day it was released. I was trying to point out, unsuccessfully, that once Sara had progressed from early catalog up to Pneuma, she will have an appreciation for Danny's skills and be amazed at the cohesiveness of the band.
@jek48372 жыл бұрын
@@powderworks No need to apologize at all. I just wanted to make sure it didn't happen that way. The 2 Tool reaction mistakes that are made that bother me personally are that one, and then when they watch the Forty Six & Two lyric video with all the explanation behind the lyrics. While that lyric video is VERY informative, the first time watchers completely miss out on a lot of the best musical parts of the song because they're too busy reading about the meaning behind the lyrics.

If you wanna do another Tool song, "Sober" is a good one. The video is a trip of it's own. But yeah, it's good to read the lyrics for Tool; there's usually a message and it's not always easy to make out the vocals.

Good call going with the lyric videos. The one exception I'd make with Tool is the song Sober, which is best experienced via their live performance at the Reading Festival.

I feel this needs a bit of context. The album "Ænima" (the song you heard it's spelled diferently, "Ænema") was dedicated to Bill Hicks, one of the most philosophical and controversial comedians in the 80's and 90's. The band were fans and friends with Bill and after he died at age 32 due to a pancreatic cancer they wanted to honour him. This song is based on one of his routines ( this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4aUhIN3oc54is0 ) and the last song of the album, "Third Eye" also has two samples of him performing other routines. Tool is a very complex band, both musically and lyrically, often compared to Pink Floyd because of that and the uniqueness of their sound. Hope you keep discovering them and enjoying yourself.

Thank you for the context, I had no idea! Definitely helps me appreciate and enjoy the song even more!

So many people have that same impression that Tool is screamy metal. They do have a song or two where they approach that but the overwhelming majority of their tracks aren't that way. This song is even more on the harsher side of their music lyrically and with the industrial sounds with the heavy grunting/breathing thing. As others have said they don't really have a bad song, but I would argue they have many better ones than Aenima, and I love this song.

Tool lyircs are really well done, but they can be really in-depth/deep so it's often best not to figure out what's going on. In some songs (like "Forty-Six & 2"), it might be worth it to read what the song is about BEFORE you listen to it. By far, though, the music is the best part about Tool.

TOOL… Each song sounds similar with the same droning bass lines and heavy guitar with not much melody. Not much feeling or passion, nothing delicate and beautiful. No keyboards or saxophones or any other instruments to give it flavor. Heavy drumming that has no melodic rhythms and use of different tones to created texture and feeling. Once I heard one song from Tool, every other song for three hours sounded the same. The visuals are boring as hell. Just patterns waving like you’re on LSD, nothing interesting No story telling in the images. Just the same crap for the entire show. I find Tool to be a very boring show from start to finish. Can hardly understand the lyrics and the hair style looks like some punk on crack. You couldn’t pay me to go see them twice. I’ll take Pink Floyd, Kansas, Yes, Supertramp, Rush, ZZ Top, Santana………
