truly my favorite album. an absolute masterpiece.. i feel bands can fade weather it be their skill or passion but tool is just on another level of understanding. a lot of thought went into this album, i saw someone elses comment 6 songs in 13 years. tool for me will always be my favorite when they get transcendental and trippy. when they jam out on super intricate layered riffs or patterns. i love getting lost in the music. maynard i love your voice but when its just the 3 forming a pyramid (danny justin and adam) something truly magical happens. i hope they can put out new music. feel the sting feeling time bearing down..........

They've been at this writing approach for 20 years. The issue is that they took the parts and forced it into the writing approach on this one. Seems like they had a grand design, but some of the building blocks/riffs have a been here done that vibe. The effect is very intentional, but very little "new" going on unless your zonked on LSD or deeply want this record to be profound. Mature, well thought out, intellectually lots of onion layers, but not compelling in the way most of the prior stuff was to me. On a basic level, Maynard sounds like an afterthought through most of the record. That's where I'm at now.

This has been fun to watch and consider.
@plaincoils5 ай бұрын
I think this video has some good points and I do like hearing about the interesting thematic connections people find in these albums. I’m certain at least some of the stuff covered here was deliberately devised by the musicians. for one they definitely are interested in the esoteric... alchemy, the occult, sacred geometry, etc. you know, the basic stuff that a lot of white american dudes seem to get into while integrating a series of powerful, transpersonal experiences with psychedelics... (not judging or anything, same boat here) I really cant help but feel like the detailed numerical connections are a bit of a stretch though. I think if you go looking for certain numbers you'll find them anywhere, and if you want certain numbers to be significant you'll find evidence of their significance. especially when you're open to stuff like adding digits together or counting the number of notes or beats played during parts of songs. it feels inconsistent - it's more or less arbitrarily choosing what you do or don’t consider a connection

“There are people who think we’re wizards - everything, every number we use, has a hidden meaning and a message,” Tool’s Adam Jones tells Revolver with a laugh. “It’s just not true. There are elements of that, but not that complex.” - Revolver Summer 2021 issue
@colinburroughs98713 жыл бұрын
Knew it. Some of this "riff on X, for Y amount of time is going to yield something numerological if that's where your head is at. Mine isn't. These things need to groove and be aesthetically cool/good long before it needs to be 7 groups 7 repeating 666 times or whatever. There's some of that, but it's not nearly as all encompassing as this author thinks.
@mercurius03 жыл бұрын
The problem was that they included some number-based symbolism in the past which was confirmed (e.g. Lateralus title track) and since then people obsessively try to find more of that in all of the songs/artwork even when it's not there. However, I do think it's interesting that he says "there are elements of that" so it's not all wishful thinking 😂

@@Sgubby I think it is, and it isn't. I do think they lace their music and time signatures with all kinds of symbolic stuff, it's actually pretty evident in many cases. I believe it's done almost mostly for the 'muse' aspect of it, and a passing interest in the occult and self-improvement. I also think you can look WAY too hard and find all kinds of ridiculous stuff that isn't there. One of these earlier videos mentioned that the album was released 17 days ago lmao, like ok and tomorrow it will be 18, wtf? I think looking too deep, or assuming that it takes some kind of super intellect to plot this stuff out is really dumb though. In fact it's kinda the opposite, you give yourself a 'map' of sorts and then write accordingly, and let everyone feel like they are in on some secret when they start to pick it apart. Same goes for believing that it's somehow imbued with spiritual properties or keys just because it has an occult concept as it's roots. I'm not much of a Tool fan to be really honest, especially earlier stuff, but Danny is an insanely talented drummer and I can appreciate the effort that goes into each project. My main gripe here, not that it matters what I want to complain about, is the number of people under these videos quoting old lyrics as though they were some kind of religious scripture. I'm sure the band would have a laugh at that, in fact I'm sure they have a good laugh at many of their fans in more ways than that.

What you should do is an in-depth study into the band’s obsession with the occult, anti-Christ imagery/symbols, and Danny’s cult-like fascination with Aleister Crowley. Idk why Tool is so celebrated when celebs, scientists, and etc are constantly exposed for their obsession and belief in the occult. Danny Carey has every Crowley book ever written and he’s admitted to his dad being a Freemason and practicing black magick… lol, I mean, how much more evil does it get? Danny reveres Crowley and this is a man who wrote about sacrificing children and engaging in some of the most depraved sexual acts known to man. With the same sex, with children, and with animals, and he celebrates Crowley? Chapter 3, verse 12 states in Crowley’s book of the law to, “sacrifice cattle, little and big, AFTER a child.” Those are his own words written.
@JohnDoe-pd2lh2 жыл бұрын
Oh no, freemasonry *and* magick?! So evil and scary! Seriously though, Crowley definitely was a depraved pervert, but most of his stuff is metaphor, or encoded. Not to say he wasn't a degenerate, but he wasn't nearly as sinister as many people like to believe. Besides, being curious about, or even being a fan of someone who is genuinely evil, doesn't necessarily mean you yourself are evil.
@DMTmates2 жыл бұрын
Anti Christ ? Have you listened to opiate and opiate 2 lol it's an invocation for Christ. You get these people that hear the word occult and immediately think danger it's evil. That's just nonsense. While their is duality in Magick it's not rocket science to see they are on God's side and are not practicing evil Magick. Also Crowley had amazing work until a point. When he summoned Choronzon he claimed to have won the fight but he clearly didn't. Because after that night he turned Evil. Anyone who goes against choronzon and loses will be dead spiritually and will become evil. His work before this night was divine

@@DMTmates Are you kidding me? The only album that speaks positively about Christ or just teachings associated with Christ’s teachings is 10,000 Days, as it’s a sort of memorial to Maynard’s mother, who was a devout Christian.
