With Danny’s sacred geometry and the length of time between albums, it wouldn’t surprise me if some or all of the numbers are purposeful and significant. On the other hand it could all be coincidental. We may never know for sure. To be honest, all the numbers and research put into this video had my head spinning! I think for me, I’ll just enjoy Tool’s musical masterpieces and not overthink the numbers. I have found Lateralus to be a spiritual experience. My favorite off of FI is Invincible, definitely a masterpiece.

During the music clinic events they did a little while back, some fans asked about Lateralus' theorized reordering in the 'Holy Gift" sequencing, as it seems to flow much more 'perfectly' than the CD ordering. Adam, Danny, and Justin all apparently acted like they had never heard of it, and that they released the album in the ordering that it was intended. Given their mystique, I would assume (as someone else here mentioned) either that A.) TOOL is operating on this insane level, and would want to keep that under wraps/likely would not be able to explain it if they tried. or B.) all of this really is coincidental and/or did happen but the band did not intentionally plan it out. Either way, it would make sense in their position to want to deny any of this, at least to keep up their "mysterious" brand image. Personally, I think-whether intentionally by design of the band or not- the synchronicities in TOOL's music are indeed happening, and contribute to the unique music fans can't seem to get enough of. Paraphrasing Maynard in the video, "I lose nothing believing it is real if it actually isn't," [and conversely; ..."but I may be missing out if I don't believe, and it is real"].

If one really thinks that the prevalence of 58 all throughout the album (and honestly I barely scratched the surface), like for example in Pneuma, the numerical additive sum of 7empest's 15:43, the numerical value of Noah, which is highly likely related to 7empest and Maynard's future catastrophe undercurrent, the abbreviated form of the name of Metatron the angel of the first sphere, which has a numerical sum of 620 which is the seconds count of Fear Inoculum, and the fact the 58 is the sum of the first 7 prime numbers and a mean Saturn Return number, in an album revolving around 7 and the Saturn Return, is coincidental, then, well....that is your opinion.

For those who are continuesly calling all of this coincidence (which in fact there is no such thing in the natural universe), have missed the entire point of Tool itself. They are smart enough to turn their egos off and let the universe do its thing, ala work through their subconscious, manifesting a microcosm and model of the universe itself in each of their albums from within and without the human framework. Alan Moore has done the same as well as many other actual great artists through history. Just because you like riffs and sound, doesn't mean these great artists have done decades of complex work and study off that same premise. Open your minds to possability; why else are you even here?

I agree that they follow their subconscious, I try to do that with my own musical creations. But I will also say that every thing this video points to, I highly doubt Tool consciously chose to do. The fact that it is subconscious means that it is true. Your subconsciousness is your real self devoid of all outside infiltration. That is why the number 7 is significant because artists have been depicting for generations from a subconscious feeling. Agree. Just because I didn't take the time to dive in, or for that matter am smart enough myself to really know where to start, Doesn't mean that this concept that is bigger than my current understanding of everything, is just mere coincidence. Despite all of the numerology, it’s Shakespearean references that punctuate the breadth of the album, and, in doing so, flag one of its central themes: entropy. In Pneuma, corporeal existence is described as “this guise, this mask”. But it’s worth mentioning that, when archaically spelled ‘masque’, the word refers to a short play performed by (typically) nobility as a sort of opening act before a main dramatic production. These concise skits often began with ‘anti-masques’ that established a chaotic milieu, which would be corralled into order by the players in the subsequent ‘masque’; ultimately reinforcing an Elizabethan-era belief in the triumph of intentioned order over uninhibited chaos. In fact, Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ revolves around the magician Prospero, who conspires to produce a masque both as an act of revenge against his enemies as well as an allegorical morality play to educate his daughter, who is coming-of-age and soon to marry. He succeeds, and, with his enemies defeated, restores righteousness and order. Both Aenima & Lateralus open with songs that serve as expositions of negativity, and the albums proceed, alchemically, if you will, to turn these leaden initiations into golden finales. Think Third Eye & Reflection... Fear Inoculum, however, does the exact opposite. Starting with the eponymous first track, the album gets steadily darker, until it lands in that epic hurricane of a song, 7empest. This descent is Prospero’s work undone; the album ends with an anti-masque, in which chaos reigns triumphant, and all the king’s horses, and all the king’s men cannot put anything back together again. This, of course, is not to say that Tool has, in the passage of decades, become overly pessimistic. Rather, it seems that they’re pointing to the infallibility of spiritual development as a panacea for our increasingly unhinged epoch, while being honest about the entropic course our species is taking and the inevitability implied thereby.

About the significance or purpose of all this. Besides that it is absolutely awesome to discover a record that way, I think it best shows in what Danny said, which was shown in the video. They believe in every bar, not just every verse and chorus, every bar of this record. It shows the passion they bring up creating this art. Personally I think this is a, if not the most important aspect of creating art. The energy that goes with it is so signifficantly different to something that is f.e. created only for the sake of earning money with it. For me it makes the escence of expieriencing art.

Saturn is represented by lead/black and Jupiter represented by purple hence why the album art work has both converging as an allegory to The Great Conjunction. The Greeks worshiped Zeus which is Jupiter, in Pneuma Maynard references the child releasing the light, aka Jupiter the son of Saturn, one spark, sun becoming references the conjunction and how it's appearance resembled that. Descending beings with the sound of ocean waves crashing as we enter the age of Aquarius ruled by Saturn, Jupiter is now Descending.

You can dissect a lot of bands/music and find something similar, if this band plays outside of boundaries. And even if not. There's plenty of room for accentuation within 4/4. Your overanalyzation fits the mysterious tool just waaay better ;)! And I really appreciate your effort!! An example: everything is based on the golden ratio. Without exception. But on a different scale, we cannot simply see. If you force things into the ratio to make the obvious obvious, then it easily gets mystified. The inoculum _in oculum_ relation is not appropriate, or at least not fit perfectly, because "oculum" is the accusative mode of "oculus". To be used after the prefix "in" it should be on dative (or ablative) mode, which is "oculo". A case could be made that it is vulgar latim, thus the modes are not important, but given the whole academic-like effort in all the rest, this would seem out of pace with the rest.

It's not intended to be intentional at every level. The artists certainly had a hand in a large portion of the music's layers but Magical properties take on their own path without every action calculated after it's execution. This video is an individual's look into the inner workings of how and what is being created. It isn't proclaiming that every single line of complicated math, geometry or scientific formula was intentional by the artists themselves. It would exist regardless. Maynard once talked about the redundancy of formulating the fibonacci sequence into Lateralus on the basis that it exists everywhere anyway. The Joe Rogan interview I believe. Anyway, the video was very well put together and informal. It's a shame people don't seem to see it that way.

There's a couple of problems with analysis like this, but here are three of the big ones: 1) Calling 2 measures of 11/8 as "22/8" when the underlying rhythms aren't some sort of complex octuple is a pretty big stretch, especially when the underlying rhythms during that part in F.I. is clearly defining a complex quadruple (1 uh let 2 uh let 3 uh let 4 and). Calling that "22/8" is like calling two measures of 4/4 as "8/4" because it's convenient to an argument. Sometimes bars may be transcribed like that in musical notation, but it's usually for convenience of the reader -- that's why Schism's drum tabs usually show "6/4" but guitar and bass tabs show a measure of 5/8 followed by 7/8, which is technically more correct than 6/4 due to the way the beat is syncopated. 2) Controlling the exact length of a track is almost impossible without the use of a metronome; you need to have a reliable BPM to calculate the exact length of a bar. Danny doesn't use a metronome, which results in the subtle pushing and pulling of feel throughout a track. Even an absolute monster of a player like Danny isn't going to play each measure's BPM perfectly, so there's no way to know how long a track is going to be even if you know how many measures a song has before recording. You can make the argument that track lengths can be controlled by elements like fade in and fade out, not every track on this CD is like that - specifically F.I. and Invincible. 3) Rhythm and meter are only two components of musical composition. To focus on these exclusively to drive this entire analysis would imply that Tool doesn't put as much thought and effort into things like melody, harmony, phrasing, tension and release. Why would an entire band decide to encipher these very specific timings and meanings, but not have as much thought surrounding phrasing choices? Theoretically a band of the acute awareness that has been presented would use similar techniques to decide that numbers related to Saturn may also inform how long they hold a tension note over the first chord of a progression. I'm a Tool fan as much as anyone and am aware of Danny's interest and involvement in magick, but to assume such a high level of calculation like this comes off as confirmation bias. Occam's Razor probably applies here in that the guys sat down and said "meters in 7 sound cool, and we resonate with the number 7, so lets write a bunch of riffs in 7. Oh, we have some cool riffs in 11 as well, so lets have a few parts in 11 and maybe try mashing them against 7 since polymeters are pretty neat sounding." I get that this is from a semi-official source and that there's a good chance that this is a parody of Tool fans stretching to find ghosts in places where there are none. If that's the case, hopefully this explains some of the joke. TL;DR: lol you read this far nerd

1) I tend to think Tool counts more in 8th notes, though there are plenty of quarters like 11/4 or 7/4 in the album. I also tend to think that Tool don't think too much in terms of measures, but cycles instead. A cycle may be divisioned into a number of measures, but the original idea is more a longer cycle. So, Pneuma's main cycle starting at 1:17/18, is 33/8 in total, which most fans section into 7/4, /74, 5/8, or 14/8, 14/8, 5/8, but Tool almost certainly mapped it out as 33/8, which is due to 33 being a central number to the album (which I barely talked about in this video). You mentioned Schism. Schism was written/is counted by the band as 6 & 1/2 8th note beats! The 22/8 from the band with Maynard's 7 spells out PI, which is why I mentioned it, and there's more PI stuff in the album that I didn't mention here. 2) Not sure what to say here other than, yes, Tool did find a way to make their Fear Inoculum songs be exact amounts of seconds, to be able to spell out additive number values in the track lengths (15:43 = 58, etc), and to add up the full digital version into 360, to represent completion, full circle, and the squaring of the circle's 360 degrees. The 3 addition segues probably helped in getting to 360. 3) I'm also not sure what you're saying here, nowhere in this video do I imply that the numbers are the only thing they spent time on. I begin the video by saying their music has always been numbers and emotions together, which Fear Inoculum culminates. I rushed out this video and didn't put in a TON of other material. But I'm not implying that feelings, melody, and such doesn't carry the same complexity as the occulted numbers in the structure of the songs. But I guess it's easier to talk about numerical significance than how so and so relates to a feeling or intention.

@@ToolArchive I want to be clear in that I am in no way trying to disrespect your analysis of the art. I respect your views of it, especially as you are closer to the source than almost all of us. The work done in this video is really cool and valuable regardless of how I may perceive it. My main problem is that I've seen analysis similar to this since the early 2000s, starting with the whole "holy gift" thing. Or the multiple novellas written about how 10,000 days was the "fake album" and the "real album" was just days away. I've at least seen MJK scoff at the "holy gift" stuff in interviews. So it's hard to take any Tool analysis seriously at this point, especially after MJK talked negatively about his usage of the Fibonacci sequence on that JR podcast. I'm glad to go back to my three points, but I think I can sum up my position in that I'll only believe a majority of the points made here if a band member comes out and both confirms and explains their design. And even if that happened, I'd probably still think it's BS due to the whole "think for yourself, question authority" aspect of Tool, and my experience as a composer. Thanks for all the work you do! Hope 2021 is a better year us all.

Fascinating enough, the union of opposites and the balance of opposites are two different concepts. The latter is Daoism and the former is the ultimate level of Buddhism. Maybe there are more areas where they can be found, of course. The chakra system is the Hindu one. The Buddhist one has five.
