My Falcon EFI V8 had a flat battery and we tried this with a Dewalt 18v 5ah battery. Worked mint. We only left the battery connected for about 30 seconds before we started the engine as we had the same concerns about 18v into the ecu. That was about a year ago and we've never had any bad after effects. Great video cheers!

I've tried this to test lights on a trailer once and blew all it's bulbs! So no important circuits like memory of all your ECU'S and stereo to worry about? I'm guessing the car battery being flat was dragging your voltage down which helped.

I wonder for how long can you keep the wire / connector connected to that 20v bat and what would happen if you lets say leave connected for for instead of 1min , it’s stay connected for 5/10 mins and then try to start up will it start or just drain the 20v and act like a charger but not a jump booster battery ? What’s the minimum AH Or brand recommendations will a 1.5AH bat 20v make the trick ? I guess it also depends on the vehicle size isn’t it the more or less possibility I’ll turn on ?

Kirchhoff's voltage law (2nd Law) states that in any complete loop within a circuit, the sum of all voltages across components which supply electrical energy (such as cells or generators) must equal the sum of all voltages across the other components in the same loop.

It always makes me nervous when I see engines started with the 18V battery still connected. The internals of the battery pack are not made for high amp draw, although it is (ideally) such a short burst that the risk of fire should be very low. Still, it's not something that I would risk with a $200 DeWalt battery unless I really had to. Nice work on the forks though, it's very bush mechanic 😁 Since it will provide 16-17V depending on the battery pack capacity but for a short duration, I wonder if there's any gassing?

It will depend on the design of the ECU in the car though this LandCruiser doesn't actually have an ECU so there's nothing to damage!
@MiniLuv-19843 жыл бұрын
Very good! Loved the analysis. This got three neurones going - the other four are in lock down :) First, if the starting battery is good but really flat, then it's not likely anything connected in the vehicle will see the 18V (20V if its fully charged) from the tool battery. Most of the voltage drop will occur inside the 18V pack if the protection circuits for limiting current/temperature of the cells is working in the tool battery. At worst the terminals will see around 15-16V for a brief period then drop to normal charging voltage pretty quickly I expect. In any case, it's probably a good idea to disconnect the battery from the vehicle before you do this. Since I already carry tool batteries, I think I might add 15m of 24AWG twin core with crocodile clips and tabs at either end giving me a total of 30m cable or around 0.5R to my arsenal, or longer if its heavier gauge speaker wire (yep, cheap speaker wire)...aluminium wire even better! By the way, did the Makita charge up ok after this?
@LockyourHubs4WDing3 жыл бұрын
You're right, it depends on the state of charge of the main battery will determine what the resultant voltage will be (and the current heading from the tool battery to the car battery) Different brand/capacity tool batteries will have different current limiting abilities and low voltage protection etc. You'll be happy to hear the Makita battery charged up fine and lives to fight on another day.

@@LockyourHubs4WDing I reckon you are on a winner there. Who wants to shell out another $100 to have yet another thng in the vehicle that, chances are you will only ever use once and it too may be dead when you need it most (Murphy Guaranteed Outcome).
