About the "Learn to swim" line, he really wants California to fall into the sea. The resulting body of water would border Arizona, thus "Arizona Bay" and thus all the Los Angeleans need to learn to swim.

I agree with you 💯! It's amazing to me that this band has been around for over 25 years and seems to only get better and better. Also their older work has held up especially well over the years. IMO Justin has been the best bass player on the planet for awhile now. Having him with Danny Carry in this band along with Maynard and Adam Jones definitely feels unfair to other bands. The only other bands I can recall that had such a high level of talent from each member are Pink Floyd and Rush.

Welcome to the Tool family. Many of us Tool lovers had other bands that we called our favorites in the past. Then we started investigating the rabbit hole, and fell right in. Tool can do that to you. You start of liking a certain riff, or a certain song, and the next thing you know you have to hear more Tool, and then before you know it, it seems like you need to hear at least a few songs everyday. Sadly though, going back to listen to some other band might not be the same, especially if you compare them to Tool. That's been my experience anyhow. I hope that you really enjoy your Tool journey. Think everyone covered it but the song is basically about his time living in LA and how he thought it was horrible. Full of narcissist's and self absorbed people. The song is tongue in cheek play on California falling into the Ocean which might happen one day if the San Andreas fault line gives way. He is telling all these folks to learn to swim and he will see them in Arizona Bay... which funny enough he now owns a Winery in Arizona. He does not mean it literally hence, "don't call me a pessimist, read between the lines". He just really hated living there lol

A quick search of the comments told me there wasn't much said about this, but the entire album is dedicated to, and inspired by, Bill Hicks. Hicks had an entire comedy/philosophy bit about a great earthquake causing the shit hole that is LA to slide off into the ocean. Thus creating Arizona Bay, and the need for folks to "learn to swim". It is at once metaphorical, and literal. At least as I understand it. I became a fan of Bill Hicks in the 80's after his many appearances on David Letterman, and was pleasantly surprised to see Tool's dedication to him when this album was released in 96. Hicks died in 94-ish.

Tool are; Maynard James Keenan (Vox) Adam Jones (Gtr) Justin Chancellor (Bass) Danny Carrey (Drums) Justin replaced Paul D'Amour for the Ænima album to the present day Tool is a very rewarding rabbit hole to dive into. They don't tend to follow rules with Verse, Chorus, Verse and the time signatures continually change. It's hard to find the groove, especially if you follow the drums. Danny is an octopus, he has the ability to play 4 different rhythms with each limb. He's widely regarded as one of the all time greats. Maynard has a wonderful way with words. He manages to leave his songs open to many interpretations as his lyrics are often ambiguous. As for song suggestions, you will get asked for every song in the catalogue. They really don't have a bad song. My favourites are; The Grudge Pushit (Salival Live Version) Disposition/Reflection/Triad (The Holy Trinity) Lateralus

Hey Lauren, I love that you give the songs a second listen as part of your system! As someone who generally needs several passes myself for a song (or an album) to really stick, I've wondered why I've not seen anyone else do that before. Anyway, a few suggestions: Jinjer - "Pisces": Great song, live session is my favorite version. This one's a reaction channel cliche so you've likely heard it before, but beyond the shock value, the whole thing is really an amazing metaphor. Gemini Syndrome - "Gravedigger": Gemini Syndrome - "Zealot": My favorite hidden gems (non-singles) from these guys. They aren't well known, but have a bunch of great songs. Most of their singles are good too--"Pleasure and Pain", "Stardust", "Remember we Die" are some you may have heard of. Tallah - "Overconfidence": Great track from a new metal band that released their first album last year. Old-school nu metal vibe, combines a bunch of 90's metal stuff but they really make it their own.

Hi Lauren, I'm glad you listen to the songs again. That's really important, especially with Tool. I'm a huge fan, but some songs don't grab me on the first or second listen. For other Tool, you definitely have to try "Sober", "46&2" (as someone else mentioned), "H", and "Jimmy". These come from the same time or earlier than this song. You might try them out before getting into the newer stuff. As for other bands/songs, to stick to something that seems like a cross between Tool and Chevelle, try Karnivool - "New Day". You did Slipknot, so you should check out another masked band, Mushroomhead. "Solataire Unraveling" is a good one to start with. To get outside of your comfort zone musically, but with lyrics that I think you'll really appreciate, try Mgła - "Exercises in Futility IV".

Lol I think it’s great that you give the songs a re-listen...especially for a band like Tool since sometimes it takes a fair bit of listens until a song clicks. The bass in Tool songs is so prominent that I don’t think you could go wrong with any song you pick. Although Aenima is a good song,I wouldn’t say it’s a favorite. Some suggestions via my top favs: Pushit studio and then the Salival version (two different songs really)Stinkfist,H,Lateralus and Parabol and Parabola(which are a must to listen to back to back). You should give Mudvayne a shot. They were sort of like what you'd get if you squished Slipknot and Tool together, more cerebral than Slipknot but heavier than Tool. Their first album LD.50 was a masterpiece. -1, Death Blooms, Cradle, Prod, and especially Severed are all great songs off that first album. I think they were another band that didn't get a decent shot because of the gimmicky look they had when they first started.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee In regards to people giving you crap about not catching "mom" on the first listen... I blasted Mudvayne's "Death Blooms" for decades (even knew it by heart on guitar), thinking it was just some brutal nihilist/escapist-type raging. I didn't "get it" for about 20 years.

Lauren, it's to the point that when I see you posted a Tool, or anything Maynard, it becomes must see. Mostly because, like I said earlier, if you like the song, or are holding in a fart. With that said, "Learn to Swim," is a lyric because if Los Angeles gets sucked into the ocean, "Learn to swim, see you down at Arizona Bay!" the people of LA will have to learn to swim to survive. Now, the overall meaning of the song, has a lot to do with LA, itself, and nothing to do LA, itself. The recurring theme in most of Maynard's writing, since Aenima, is that humankind should become more. We won't. But, we should. We are untapped potential. Maynard laments this in most of his songs. In this song, which is largely based on comedian, Bill Hicks' standup, LA is a microcosm of our baser instincts. We yearn for the material. We yearn to be either accepted, or strive to be anti-accepted. Either way, the material governs us, or moreover, becomes the metric in which we measure one's shallow definition of success or being without success. I'll frame it this way...who has accomplished more in terms of substance? Mark Zuckerberg? or an elementary school teacher? If we measure by the material, it's not even a contest. However, if we measure by substance...well now...an entirely different conversation altogether. That's what this song is about. Why we will not become more. Why we are feeble as a species, and incapable of the ascension necessary to become....more.

The ending is the sound of Los Angeles's being flushed away. If you listen closely it the instruments sound like something spiraling down a drain.

Listen, analyze, listen again...keep going with this. Stick with this album maybe a couple more songs? Maybe Eulogy, 46&2 and H. The Pot, a great song yes, but will seem like child's play if you continue the TOOL journey.

That's a bold statement about The Pot! Judging by the comments, I'll try 46 & 2 next. :)

Maynard is being literal. He was California to fall into the ocean. See you down in Arizona Bay. 😂
