This guy does all the definitive Tool drum covers hands down. For so many other drummers when they cover Tool they struggle so much with the technicality of the pieces that they end up losing that power and passion that Tool simply requires. This guy plays the parts perfectly and plays them with balls. There are no other Tool drum covers on KZbin; only johnkew.

WillHerndon Hey Will - I actually got to see Danny work / Evil JoeB during The tracking of 10,000 Days ~ There is a click track... He most often does not use or has it on very subtly for cues etc. he adjusts the level as he wishes it's was on a fader a next to his kit. He made all his own click/cue tracks in Logic w/ various diff sounds/accents for diff parts. (Those tracks actually sounded so unique & awesome I wanted a copy of it) But in general you're correct as he most often checks against it or plays through it. Joe didn't move a single hit on that album digitally, & most songs were tracked as one complete take (no stops) Joe said he never did more then 4 takes most often 2. Bottom line an elaborate click exists he checks against it BUT most often "PLAYS through it" manipulating the tempo up/down to taste & dynamics as he tracks.

Thanks for this great feedback, and I'm so stoked that this video has inspired you to work in some drumming before work! You're right - with practice, you become more efficient, the technique gets better, and muscle memory helps just guide your hands where they need to be. So without all that tension and struggling to keep up when you're first learning it, after some practice it becomes much less physically demanding.

Thanks for allowing people to see what Danny Carey is doing on the drums during these songs. He uses every drum and every cymbal and actually uses every sound the drums and cymbals have to offer. Playing anything Danny does is extremely extremely hard. He uses such off time stuff you almost have to train yourself to do what he does since its so un-natural. I hope everyone else that see's this appreciates what your doing because its incredible and a pleasure to get to watch. Thank You

That left foot from :45 to 1:30. I can keep a basic beat on the drums, but not a drummer. Sometimes it's the little things in life. They way he did it here is a different fill than on the album. He did tom-tom-base-base (and cycles in snare-tom-base-base) rolls; Carey does snare-tom-tom-tom-base-base rolls. So he's doing 8 for Carey's 6. It's a hard fill :)

Fantastic job man I have been trying with no luck to tune my drums to sound like Carey's. Your tuning is spot on how did you get it to sound like that? Is it effects or computerized or just straight up toms
@johnkew10 жыл бұрын
Besides the V-drum pads, everything was recorded acoustically. The trick I found to get the toms to sound more like Carey's is to tune them higher than you think they should be. Carey particularly tunes the upper toms high (10 & 12-inch). I also tuned the resonant head slightly lower than the batter head, to create that dropping tone. Hope this helps!
