The most common interpretation of this song is that Maynard talks about the relationship with his son (Devo H. Keenan). That since he has become a father, he has to let that old part of him die so to speak/you can no longer live selfishly. “I am too connected to you to slip away, fade away”

@@user-wh6sp6st8sKeenan is all about double and triple entendrés. The Pot is about four or five different things that are somewhat connected. This song could be about both, in a way. Snakes are used to reference heroin sometimes, but also a temptation from something bad.

The snake behind him is his past self. The blood before him is his newborn son. When he says "I will die. I dont mind." and "consideratly killing me" he is using dying as an exaggerative term for changing. He is killing who he was and becoming a newer, better version of himself. So his son is "considerately" killing who he is because his son is forcing him to become a better person.

Maynard writes the lyrics after the music done. How incredible it must be for Danny, Justin, & Adam to compose a song sonically, only to be blown away by the time Maynard gives it a narrative?!?

Such a personal song that every father can relate. Its about the birth of his child and the reflection of abuse that he doesn't want to continue. The first time he saw his child killed his ego. It was no longer about him, but his child became the ultimate desire. He's happy to die and become something new. We are reborn when confronted with our reflection. I legit dont care about myself compared to my childs well-being. Would die 10,000 painful deaths for one minute of her happiness. I died when she was born and couldn't be more joyful for it. Everyday, she consideratly kills me. Kills my ego.

The journey of self discovery is what Tool is all about. The lines that make me tear up. This is the point where the walls built to protect oneself from emotional harm breakdown and you FEEL everything for Maynard is was looking onto the eyes of his son (my blood before me, begs me open up my heart again) As I look in his eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of those times I could have cried then I should have cried then

My favorite track from Tool! Thank you! After watching, I went back through your videos and noticed you'd not reacted to Opeth yet. They are a Swedish band who's lyrics are in English, and their front man Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of many inspirations for Tatiana Shmayluk of Jinjer. He is similar, with s beautiful clean voice and very articulate growls. I would suggest a live performance to start out, Opeth- Harlequin Forest at the Royal Albert Hall High Def. A warning, the song itself is 11 minutes long and this video is over 13 minutes. It starts off with Mikael (or Michael to his English speaking fans) telling the crowd about meeting with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. His banter with the crowd is amusing, but could be chopped for a reaction.

I get the impression that the lyrics are about the fear and resistance to change and its feminine qualities. Of course, it has been said that this song is about Maynard stepping into fatherhood, so it makes sense.

If i can remember right, this song had to do with his son being born and how it was changing him, and his fear of passing on the same toxic traits his parents, particularly his father, passed on to him; and not having the type of connection and relationship with his son that he so desires. The line about the “snake hissing behind him” is referencing those toxic traits; always there waiting to strike. The line about “my blood before me” is literally his son; and the line “days a ways I still feel you touching me changing me” is Maynard ruminating after feeling his son moving in the womb and how it was changing him. I like how he phrased it as his son touching him(through the womb) instead of him touching his son.(through the womb) and in doing so is changing him. And the repeated line of “snake hisses behind me” to accentuate that constant, reoccurring anxiety and fear. “Considerately killing me” could be a reference to how his son was “killing him” or rather the parts of him that he wishes gone. Considerately, because it’s not a malicious.

I've always taken this song to represent the internal struggle of detachment from our personal selfishness to only care about oneself and not allowing ourselves the sacrifice needed for others, the snake being the part within us that only wants to protect ourselves, always the little whisper, but trying to overcome that for something greater, almost a type of fear of letting go and opening up.

For him it's his son, but really I think it's about how we can choose to let go of a way we've been in the hopes of being better for the sake of those we care about. And if you truly love someone then it's not even really a sacrifice. Hence the, 'I don't mind'. I'm not a parent, but parents are certainly good at this kind of selflessness.

My favorite song of all time, period. Tool are absolute masters of their profession. It goes without saying but them live vs on record isn't even close. They are the best live band I've ever seen. "My blood before me, begs me to open up my heart again" I had those same fears and hesitations about becoming a father for the first time. I had my own snake in my past and it scared me that I would be the same. I'm glad I opened myself up to it, because it's the greatest thing I've ever done. The "considerately killing me" part, comes with having to love something more than yourself. The fear of losing what you love, kills you, it eats at you, but not purposefully.....considerately. It's very similar to the lyrics by Bad Omens "love is the death of peace of mind". It's just that Tool is masterful at metaphor, you have to dig deep. The snake is his bad parentage, in my case, my father.

My feeling is that this is about the birth of his son. He broke up with his son’s mom and it seemed like he didn’t really want his son to be born. But once his son was here, he realized that his baby boy was amazing. That snake is telling him one thing before the birth, but then once he was here he drowns that old thought and he now knows that he’s connected forever to his child.

That guitar solo is one of my favorite it is so powerful. The snake is Maynard’s past way. He talks about his obsession with womanizing sleeping around. After the birth of Devo who is the blood before he realizes that there is more to it. The first Perfect circle album is really about that struggle. The creative way he writes his song this could easily be talking about a toxic relationship or I heard people describing substance abuse can be fitted into these lyrics. H being short for heroin.

When I was a younger man, I thought the first 3 studio Tool albums were him singing about things outside him. As I've aged, I realize that almost every song (except a few like hooker with a penis), is a man battling with himself. I've not being going through a good time lately. I've been fighting with parts of myself that are difficult to face. Revisiting this album has really helped me fight that fight.

I've always thought it was a song about 'H' specifically, and our relationship with addiction in general, not specifically from heroin. You know that they're a sort of self-help organisation that uses various rhythmic elements to unsettle our subconscious, whilst using neuro-linguistic programming to have the lyrics work without effort.

I always had a different take on this song, which I don't think is the intended one(That is more likely about his son, as mentioned in other comments). I always viewed this as being about entering into a new relationship but carrying the baggage(the snake) with you and the strife(the storm) that brings with it. The snake whispers in your ear about what could happen but you want to open your heart to the new person. I always looked at it with the idea we are dying every minute, so someone considerately killing you is making those moments better. Eventually becoming vulnerable and having those hard discussions and facing those things you are carrying with you can let you stop putting that baggage onto the new relationship and see what can be there.
