To me this song meant everything to me. When my son was born, he was jaundiced and put under those lights with the blindfold. I left one day to get my wife some food and was listening to this album while out and about. I had already spent a couple days staying up watching over my boy, making sure he rested well, and his blindfold stayed on. While out on my trip to get lunch, this song came on... Bare in mind, I've dabbled in all matters of debauchery, it seemed as tho everything came full circle that day. I was shown what laid before me and what could be. I wept. I listened to these words like they were gospel. It hit me like ton of bricks. Everything I had ever done was laid before me, and it was all washed away. I had got what I wanted... I got my son... and I had a true purpose in this life... it changed me. I am the king of my world and I control my destiny. My family is my world now... not my party life. Silence legion, stay out of my way

I think it goes even deeper. I think this song is about death and losing a loved one and what you would be willing to give up just to spend one more day with that person. RIP Kory Moore.

Jamel, I always enjoy your pauses and commentary, but watching your reaction to TooL is the best. I think most tool fans were pretty speechless / mind blown when they first experience it and grasp at the many layers of music transitions and lyrics. They still give me the feels even so many years later. Sometimes when I don't know what to listen to, I just put in your reactions. It's just great! You have an open ear for genres, and I love that about you! Keep on jammin!! 🎶

You're absolutely right about the tube in the mouth thing. That's what Adam is using to make that sound. It's an effect typically called the "Golden Throat", or "Talk Box" that mixes your guitar signal along with the signal of the tube in your mouth to effectively "talk" through your guitar. Peter Frampton (a great musician from the 70's) also used it a lot.

In the lyric he’s saying that he would wish away all that he has even at the THOUGHT of losing the other person for even just one day. (The person Maynard is speaking about in the song you might think, is a lover, it’s not, he wrote it about his son.) However tool has also said that some of their songs are ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways by the listener. The “tube” you’re talking about that Adam Jones is using is called a talk box. My favorite Tool song.

By far my favourite track on this album. "Prayed like a martyr dusk to dawn. Begged like a hooker all night long." Adam's use of the voice box was made famous in the 70's by Peter Frampton on "Do you feel like we do" and in the 80's by Mathias Jabs of The Scorpions on the track "The Zoo".

Great song! I believe this was the only studio song that Danny used his Paiste kit on. I’ve always loved this song. Before, I never got Tool, but after many listens, I’m starting to understand them and like them. Ticks and Leeches is a great one for drums, but the title track to Fear Inoculum and Invincible are also great ones.

The 10,000 Days title has been interpreted by most Tool philosophers to be a reference to the approximate period of time between singer Maynard James Keenan's mom becoming incapacitated by a stroke when Maynard was 11 years old, and the time she died in June, 2003.

That’s exactly what Adam Jones (their guitarist) was using. It’s called Talk Box. The principle is very easy: your amplifier output is wired to the pedal with the speaker that’s facing the nozzle where you plug one end of the tube and put the other one in your mouth. Sound uses your mouth as the acoustic chamber and then gets outside into the mic. You can cut frequencies opening and closing your mouth. The effect is the same as if you play music on your phone and face the speaker right into your mouth. Try it out if you haven’t yet (I think everyone tried that).

I see alot of comments saying this song is about his son. Maynard did dedicate the song to his son but dedicating something to someone isn't always the same as creating something for someone. This song was originally wrote for his mother along with most of the 10,000 days album save a few songs. His mother was paralyzed when he was 11, she lived that way for 10,000 days. She was very religious, he was not. He could never understand how she could keep her faith through all her hardships. Maynard was not religious at all, you can tell by his earlier music with Tool and his other hand A Perfect Circle. He speaks on this in the song with "The devil and his had me down" section, but ends up saying "but you changed that all for me, lifted me up turned me around". She saved him by staying with her faith, never questioned her beliefs, making him think twice about his. Yes this can all be related to his son that is why he dedicated, not wrote it for his son. Shine on benevolent son? Who is the benevolent son? Not a human on Earth. It's Jesus, his mother's God. Maynard wouldn't use benevolent as an adjective to describe his son, since that would go against the teachings that his mother followed, all of us our sinners. Maynard chooses his words carefully and most of his songs are meant to be taken in multiple ways. So yes it's about his son as well, but it was written for his mother after she passed. This is the way.

During the guitar solo The effect Adam is using you talking about is called a talk box. It has a tube the sound you guitar goes though instead of traveling through your amp and it goes into your mouth and into a microphone, and how you move your mouth changes the way the sound of your guitar sounds. Love the reaction videos man and how you breaks down the lyrics. Your spot on with these Tool videos almost every time. Watching these takes me back to when I listened to Tool for the first time.

Jamal, I think he is talking about what he has achieved. He grown up in small town in Scottville, Michigan ( and also in a small town in Ohio with his mom). When he says "Here from the kings mountain view, Here from a wild dream come true" , I am pretty sure he is talking about how on stage preforming he has this view like he looking down from a mountain feeling like a king and his wild dream of becoming a being in a rock band came true. Then he was saying the devil and the dark side were apart of his life and brought him down. "But you change that all for me, lifted me up turn me round." So he is saying even though everything he is achieved and his good fortune of being a in rock band and making a good living, he would wish it all away if it meant losing you. So you pretty much go the overall meaning tho, Its a great song. I suggest you do Wings for Marie parts 1 & 2. Its a song about his mom having a paralyzing brain aneurysm and going on to suffer for around 10,000 days before passing away. Deep song, but very beautiful.

Actually. Jambi is the genie from Pre Wee's Playhouse. This is his song wishing his mother was back. She passed due to complications after a major stroke she had. Which is where Judith comes from by APC. He was pleading to her cause even though she was broken it never broke her faith. And that pisswd Maynard off cause in his eyes, his mom was a saint. And served her God to her dying day but Maynard couldnt cope with a just God making one of his devout followers going thru something like that. Judith was his cry to her and God for what she was going thru. By the time Jambi came out she was gone. And his one wish was to see her again.

My friend. Music like this allows us to interpret what we need at that time. But, to me, this song is very pointed. To me, it is basically saying, when you find the one you love, the one that makes you whole, everything makes sense. At that peak, you know, you would change your life, no matter how strong your demons are, to ensure your make this persons life whole and in turn, makes yours whole. You would give up all for this person/life. Keep at it my friend. Much respect.

It makes me so happy that you seem to enjoy Tool so much. Yes, that voice manipulator is called a talk box. I think one of the first to really make it popular was Peter Frampton in the 70s. I was in love with him when I was 10 years old. You should check out Do You Feel Like We Do and Show Me The Way (the live versions for both). I agree with others here that you should do Judith by A Perfect Circle (one of Maynard's other bands) and Tool's Wings for Marie part 1 and 2. All about his mother. I believe this Jambi is about her as well or possibly his son. You're doing a great job, Jamel!

Amazing reaction, bro. He wrote this song for his son.. promising he will always be there for him and can give up all his riches if that's what it takes to love his son

You hear The Walls influence in this song the most (another brick in the wall). This, like Pink Floyds work, is an album, it can be enjoyed in pieces, but the songs tie together to tell a story and play off each other. 10,000 days is a love song to Pink Floyd's The Wall.

Another interesting thing about this song is that it's written in iambic pentameter, which is why it is titled this

Alright. Let me help you a little. This album is basically a tribute to Maynard's mother he lost. So Jiambi was the wizard in the box on Pee Wee's playhouse. He wants his mom back is the just.

That sound is a talk box. Hooks through you guitar amp. It’s an effect kinda like a synthesizer that works with a tube you put in your mouth attached to a mic. Pretty awesome effect, Adam Jones is great with this effect, also so is Peter Frampton love the shirt
