In this version, Tool replaced the all of the original Zep lyrics that said "they" with "we". All of the references to snow have been replaced by the sun. Instead of "they choose a path where no one goes", we're "locked" in ours now and have done it all to ourselves. Instead of "building dreams", our dreams are dying. I've always thought it's was a reference to the earlier optimism about truth itself transforming into a cold & ugly one now as we're further along in this same "path". The original was quiet and sleepy and this one is massive and ominous. Tool doesn't make that many covers but this was perfect in it's phrasing & timing. The Salival tour was the first chance I had to see them live and it will always be a memory I'll never forget. I had my eyes closed the whole time.

Having now looked all over the place for any video the show I was speaking of, it was in Charlotte, NC and Lateralus tunes were part of the set. It must have been shortly after the release itself. I was really hoping to hear Jimmy live but didn't. I had to keep my eyes closed bc of epilepsy but it's still a memory that persists bc rarely do I get a chance to hear the band at that volume and I wasn't there for the crowd. A mistake in time to clarify.

Led Zeppelin lyrics: Close the door, put out the light No, they won't be home tonight The snow falls hard and don't you know? The winds of Thor are blowing cold They're wearing steel that's bright and true They carry news that must get through, oh They choose the path where no-one goes They hold no quarter They hold no quarter, oh Walking side-by-side with death The devil mocks their every step, ooh The snow drives back the foot that's slow The dogs of doom are howling more They carry news that must get through To build a dream for me and you, oh, oh, oh They choose the path where no one goes They hold no quarter They ask no quarter They hold no quarter They ask no quarter Yeah Without quarter, quarter, yeah (without quarter) Without quarter, quarter, quarter Taking no quarter Oh, oh, oh (hear the dogs of doom) (no, never quarter) I hear the dogs of doom are howling more Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Jimmy Page / John Paul Jones / Robert Plant Tool lyrics for "No Quarter" Lock all the doors and kill the lights No one's coming home tonight Sun beats down, don't you know? All our lives are growing cold, oh They bring news that must get through Dying dreams in me and you Oh, ooh They're locked in a place where no one goes We ask no quarter We hold no quarter Hey-oh Lock the door Kill the light No one's coming home tonight It's getting colder, it's getting colder It's getting colder, it's getting colder It's getting colder, it's getting colder It's getting colder Well, locked in a place where no one goes Lock the door Kill the light No one's coming home tonight They'll have news that must get through Dying dreams in me and you, oh Locked in a place where no one goes They have no quarter We have no quarter We ask no quarter Source: LyricFind What "No Quarter" means. (Has nothing to do with drugs or money). "The saying derives from a time long ago, during the 1600s." "The title is derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. This theme is captured in several of the song's lyrics."

I cut my rock and roll teeth on Zepplin in the late 70s. An uncle introduced them to me. I have been a huge Zepplin fan ever since. And I normally hate covers.But, in my humble opinion, this is one of the best covers in the existence of covers(Hendrix's 'All along the watch tower' and Cashs "Hurt" are about the only 2 other covers that surpass the original). Sure lyrics are a bit off...but from a musical standpoint this song is superior to the original in every way shape and form. This song just evokes MORE feelings than the original does. The long low mournful chords that will erupt into a cavalcade of hard-hitting dirges of longing. The feeling of hopelessness and hope hit you at the same time. Powerful stuff. John Bonham would have been impressed with Danny Carey's rendition of this classic.
@yodad4776 Жыл бұрын
Bush cashes version of hurt is average and does not truly tap into the feelings of loss and helplessness and the tru vapidness of drug abuse and hopelessness ..yes cash was amazing artist .yes he loved his wife but tru feelings come from hate and love ....all things your told are false only 2 feelings exist everything is a mix of the 2..love and hate ..or happiness and anger ..nothing else exists

my understanding is that tool did this cover for a movie and the execs told them to cut it down time wise or it wouldn't be used in the movie and they would have to cover all the recording costs. Tool told them to pack sand and released it themselves as one of the best zepplin covers of all time on the album Salival. Can anyone add more clarity? I can't remember the movie it was intended for.
@dalethomas1234 Жыл бұрын
I think you're mixing two stories - they recorded it for Howard Stern's Private Parts but then refused to allow them to use it. Also it was going to be included in a LZ tribute album but the album producers asked them to shorten it and cut the song when Tool refused. No real references here, so tongue in cheek. Although the first story is recounted on the Salival wiki page.

You “do usually not listen to music” … okay, stop. Just STOP! Don’t comment until you have logged at least 12’000 hrs of music listening sessions.

MAYNARD CLEARLY HAS HAD ENOUGH EXPERIENCE ALONG WITH THE OTHER BEAUTY'S OF THE BAND - TO PUT TRUE FEELING INTO THIS - I WENT INTO SOME OF MY REPEAT HORROR SCAPES FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD AND THEN THE MORE RECENT PAST OF HORROR SCAPES OF DARK NIGHTS OF THE SOUL - BECAUSE OF THE INFUSION WITHIN THE SONG - 🌄💓💓💓💓🌠

This song is about WWII soldiers. There's a very good reason you're back here. Dark days ahead of us. All of us. The implications are impossible to articulate. Locked in a place where no one goes... Indeed

@mr.lucasifer This song written by Led Zeppelin was about when the Vikings invaded England. Tool's version as about being the Vikings. Either way, DON'T GIVE NO QUARTER!! Dark days ahead, indeed. No quarter is a British word meaning, "Don't give one inch to the enemy." No surrender! Good luck! We will all need a lot of luck.

Looking at the visuals that are highly compelling. I f that the evidence matches this corilation but does not provide enough evidence to say that a balck whole can swallow the universe. ..if the universe is infinite.

Video schmideo; it's the music. And it's a losing proposition to try to out do zeppelin. But by all means, keep spouting the word salad.
