Danny is a legend! 1) He was 58 in this drum cam 2) he went to the University of Missouri-KC Music Conservatory 3) he studied and is influenced by jazz 4) he does not use clicks or backing tracks 5) he often referred to as the octopus 🐙 6) he is the master of odd time signatures and polyrhythms 7) the studio version sounds just like the live version 8) he is incredibly humble 9) he helped create those mandala pads 10) there’s more to say but can’t think of it right now With Neil Peart no longer on this earth, Danny is probably the best drummer alive right now.

When you reach the level these guys have it isn't a question of who's better because virtuoso has more of a signature than a ranking. Nobody plays like this guy, and no band sounds like (here i'll over fanboy for ya) '][' {[]} {[]} ]|_ but that doesn't mean there aren't also other virtuoso drummers/musicians that have their own unique styles. Lookin at you Primus or Radiohead. It's not like kung-fu (virtuoso: Bruce Lee) or racing (virtuoso: Marc Marquez) where you can straight up compete and find out. There's a lesson about subjectivity vs objectivity in there somewhere i'm sure. Damn artist ;-)

This video is such a feast for drummers and a display of technique and composition. It’s one thing to play comfortably and in the pocket in odd time signatures, but the way Danny floats between them in the verses and chorus, then puts on a clinic in polyrhythms with a clever use of the Swiss triplets is mind bending to watch. It either makes you want to quit or to immediately go practice. When it comes to arts and music, I don’t think “greatest” can be quantified, but Danny is one of my favorites and certainly among the elite. For legendary, still active rock drummers with mind blowing chops and composition, check out Jimmy Chamberlin from Smashing Pumpkins. Trained as a jazz drummer, he brings a sense of swing infused into their rock music, often keeping a hi-hat pulse with his left foot against rock rhythms. Great player

Yeah I laughed when he said that. I think he smoked wayyyyy too much weed. Mike Portnoy a world class drummer tried playing it and his comments about playing this song is very entertaining. I liked his comment saying “ this isn’t a song it’s a mathematical equation “. The other thing most musicians that hear this song also have a hard time figuring out the time signatures. This guy acted as if they were just standard. lol. Not judging you guys, but honestly if you’re taking your music seriously then slow down or cut out the weed.

I learned so much about time signatures, playing Tool songs, and studying the sheet music. Danny is like a Cyborg Octopus.. I HIGHLY recommend checking out a band called Meshuggah, from Sweden. The drummer Thomas Haake is a machine!!! The song “Break The Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion” or “Demiurge”which are two of their more accessible tunes, and easier to follow the first time you hear them. If you want a challenge, then check out their song “Clockworks” specifically the Drum Cam video of Thomas playing it! Enjoy….

Don't feel bad Mike, he is arguably one of the best drummers on the planet. And that's how I felt when I heard Radiohead's Bodysnatchers. It's one thing to play something you hear. It's another thing to create something on par with what you hear. My guitar teacher told me to shut up, there's only one Radiohead. Get back to practice. Great video guys. Rolling Stone ranks Danny at 26 of all time. The article says this about him, "Coming off an inauspicious late-Eighties stint drumming in novelty band Green Jellÿ (under the pseudonym Danny Longlegs), Danny Carey joined future alt-metal juggernaut Tool in 1990. In the years since, the 6′ 5″ Kansas native has established himself as the natural heir to Seventies prog giants such as Neil Peart and Bill Bruford, and one of the most widely admired rock drummers of his generation. Carey’s style combines brainy ambition - and a knack for polyrhythms and odd meters - with uncompromising force and a fluid feel. His gift is making the experimental sound natural. “It doesn’t mean anything if you just hear the drums doing tricky things,” he says. “I don’t want to have people say, ‘That guy is burning.’ I would rather hear them say, ‘That reminds me of the Moors running down the hill, or Scotsmen attacking with their heads on fire, butt-naked in the middle of winter.'” "
@A.Radwick4 ай бұрын
26? Dude is top-5, quit tripping. The meters are incomprehensible on a first listen to even seasoned musical scholars and yet he makes it sound so natural, in fact leading the progression of the music in many cases. #26. Come on guys.
