Great information, particularly about changing the tool height for scrapers inside a bowl (6-8 minute mark).

5 years old and this tutorial is just as valid to day. I am so new at wood turning I don't even have my own lathe yet. So until that day comes I am enjoying watching and taking notes from people like you. Thanks for such an informative vidio - subbed 👍

Sam, I have truly enjoyed these instructional videos! I know it takes a lot of effort on your part so I thank you very much. As a beginner that is "self taught" I realize that I should have been watching the KZbin channel long ago. I'm sure I could have saved a lot of money and, perhaps, avoided the accident that lost me half my right thumb! Keep up the great work...you are much appreciated!

Thanks Mike, I just got back from the Utah Woodturning Symposium and am pretty fired up. I got home late last night after a long drive. But can't wait to get back into the shop. Richard Raffan was scheduled to demonstrate but for health concerns could not be there. I really learned turning from his books and VHS tapes (which I still watch). I have been lucky to get to know him over the years. I missed him not being there. We all wish him the best. Keep on turning. Sam

Another great video, Sam. Packed with tips and very well presented, along with the cutting edge, should go a long way toward making my turning better and more enjoyable. You are a huge help to newbies like myself, and for that, I thank you.

Ever since I saw my first Sam Angelo video I have greatly improved my turning experiance. Although at this time I just have a mini lathe and turn ornaments. The woodturning bug has hit me and lately I am concidering a PSI Turncrafter or a NOVA Comet. Leaning toward the turncrafter. Maybe a month away......Thanks Sam for sharing so much with the rest of us.

Hi Sam, I have searched the comments and watched your video again but cannot understand the cutting dynamics for the need to raise the tool rest (and scrape higher) when scraping the inside rim of the bowl? Can you elaborate more for me? Thank you for your work
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
An important question....When scraping on the inside of the bowl it is important to be a little above center line. IF you get a catch, then the tool will not dig into the wood as much-it will "go into space". Same thing on the outside of a bowl. The tool should be cutting slightly below center, so if you get a catch the tool will not dig into the wood as much. Sam

Sam I have watched several of your videos and find them very clear and useful. I am wondering is you have a suggested source for the round tool rest you use.

Yet another great video Sam! I really enjoyed it and it answered several questions I had regarding the correct presentation of the turning tool to the wood vs tool rest height. I'm curious though, I notice you use a 'round' tool rest while I prefer a 'hardened rod' tool bar (i.e. Robust...). I find it easier to position and gauge the closeness to the turning than a round toolbar... Am I missing something or is this a 'personal preference' or??? Thanks for all you do and save turning you always!
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER8 жыл бұрын
The round tool rest is very hard steel. I got it primarily for thread chasing. It is smaller than the tool rest that came with my powermatic. But you are correct in that I can get my powermatic rest closer to the wood. But I still love the round one. I got it from Baxter tools. Sam
@ronald441810009 жыл бұрын
Once again Sam for your infinite insights and demonstrations. My question is have you ever tried using the Robert Sorby Turnmaster Pro series of lathe tools? I am continually having to re-adjust my tool rest heights as well as the distance from the workpiece in order to effectively turn. In the straight on tool bit orientation they work perfectly, but when the tool bits are rotated into the scraping mode at + or - 15 degrees they tend to catch a lot.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER9 жыл бұрын
I do not have any of these particular tools. I do have carbide tools which are mostly for hollowing but once in a while I do use them for other jobs. Carbide cutters can be extremely catchy. I have one that I hardly use because it is crazy and if I get a catch I want to throw the tool in the trash. So I know what you are saying. I think, generally, raise the tool handle a bit and have the cutting edge 1) below the center line on the outside of a bowl and 2) above the center line when on the inside of a bowl. I have a video on scrapers that explains this. Well I am not sure if I helped any. One more thing. I believe a regular bowl or spindle gouge is more versatile. You can raise or lower the tool handle, scrap or cut and more. Not so much with the carbide. Sam

Thanks again for doing these. I see you use a round bar rest a lot and I wondering when you change off and why. Cheers
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER10 жыл бұрын
Lee The one that came with my powermatic is often a little too massive. I usually start with this one. I also use the round one for thread chasing cause I can get my hand around it to hold the armrest tool. Sam
