@@ds--pu1tv Neil pert was an amazing drummer, but tho he could thrash out some insane drum grooves, he didnt do as many time changes or bounce around with as many polyrhythms the way Danny does so effortlessly and fluidly. so for straight up rocking out with your stockin out drumming the award goes to Neil, but when it comes to technicality, style, versatility, all around drumming and soul...Danny Wins...Flawless Victory...Fatality.

I agree, and I also think it's so cool that when they play live he is not out front like your typical "Front Man". Rather, he stands in the back without a spotlight on him and just does his part, allowing the three guys playing to be "out front" - when this cd dropped it stayed in my car cd player and I listen to absolutely nothing else for a month straight. I was working in the Atlanta, GA area as a local courier/delivery driver so I heard it early and often on a daily basis. It still kicks ass!

The interview you linked about Maynard saying fans can take whatever meaning they want from their songs is actually where the name of the band came from. I'm not sure if people don't know or don't care, but the music they give us, is a Tool! What people do with that tool is up to the individual. You can give someone a hammer and they can build a house or smash a window, but the tool doesn't get a say in that, the person on the other end does. Like with all things in life some people choose to feed the bad wolf. Tool is as much yours as it is anyone's, use it however you want.

Tool’s odd time signatures, polyrhythms and incredible lyrics are just a part of the genius of the music. The song Lateralus is based on the Fibonacci sequence and will throw you for a loop. You should have lyrics to follow Lateralus when doing a reaction. Parabol and Parabola MUST be reacted together as they’re 2 songs that are really 1 song and it will touch your soul. Descending is an Incredible call to arms song that along with Lateralus are my favorite Tool songs but it’s hard to have a favorite Tool song.

TOOL official videos are really a trip to the brain. Maynard James Keenan lyrics are usually deep in all senses. Maynard's other band Puscifer it's more fun, easy listening in a way and with dark sense of humor, with an Industrial and Electronic style. Musically TOOL are progressive and intricate to match the deeper lyrical meanings. Try if you want to listen to a little less deeper Progressive bands like Marillion, Saga, IQ, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Riverside, Soen, The Pineapple Thief, Paatos, maybe Dream Theater, things like that.

Awesome reaction! You called it. They're genius at using musical space to create a complex emotional state. From what I understand of their writing process, Adam, Justin, and Danny get the instruments down and Maynard listens to the music and writes lyrics from where the music takes him. As far as the song whose meaning eluded me the most, that's tough. I wasn't sure as to the meaning behind Jimmy until I found out more about Maynard's past. Then it became pretty clear. It's a great song, too. The second best track on Ænema (very close behind Pushit). Lateralus, Pneuma, and The Grudge can really cut to your center being. Each can be quite profound,

Maynard James Keenan (vocals) revealed that 'Schism' was written about the band... In 1999, Tool had not worked on any new music for 3 years since 'Aenima' in 1996... It's no secret now that the other members (Adam Jones, Danny Carey & Justin Chancellor) take a lot of time to work on music before Keenan can work on lyrics and vocal melodies... and that wait was frustrating back then... So, Keenan got a new band together to work on new music w/ guitarist Billy Howerdel, and that became A Perfect Circle in 2000, and their debut album 'Mer de noms' dropped in 2000 and became a platinum success and the band toured successfully as well. That success created more tensions within Tool and by the time Maynard wrote the lyrics to 'Schism' in 2001 for the 'Lateralus' album, he expressed his frustrations in the song and the uncertainty he felt in Tool. Thankfully, the album charted at #1 and was a huge success for Tool in 2001.

Everyone will be talking aboutf polyrhythms and different time signatures. More to that point though, different instruments will be playing different polyhrythms. The drums are often not playing the actual tempo of the song, but the bass usually is when it chooses to. You have to keep the tempo yourself, basically, or you just listen passively, which is probably the best option unless you want to challenge yourself into seeing if you can keep the tempo through the changes.

This one is mostly just multiples/sub-divisions of 6/8. I mean, sometimes they are odd subdivisions, but it's still (mostly) multiples of 3. At one point, it's basically 27/8, but 27 is divisible by 3. Regardless, the phrasing is regular enough that it feels pretty smooth. Unlike the main section in Pneuma which feels like tripping on the curb twice per cycle until you listen to it enough to get used to it, or Lateralus which is just an intentional mind-fuck of putting directly contrasting rhythms on top of each other.

I'm not an expert so don't quote me but I'm pretty sure most of TOOL's instrumental parts are put together then Maynard basically reacts to the music by putting lyrics on them. Could be why it feels that the instruments help relay the emotion behind the lyrics. Sorry I don't have a source but there was an interview Maynard did for Fear Innoculum (he doesn't do interviews often so not hard to find I imagine). He explained that's how he did it for that particular album and when asked I think he said he's always done it like that, or something of the sort.

From sex to to anger ,abuse , to hardship over love one's, addiction, etc. One song that really struck me with a lot of thought was parabola , parabla ,(if I got the name of the songs wrong I apologize I'm not the best at remembering everything) where he talks how everything in life is but a fleeting moment in time , and to really make the best at what life has to offer , so I suggest you check it out. I agree that songs are up for interpretation. Art is supposed to evoke a specific yet universal felling or emotion I think. I just get angry when people say 'it could mean anything, it's totally on the listener'. Like the song is not about making a tuna sandwich! It's not about changing a tire! Your interpretation has to relate to the actual content of the piece! It can't just be about anything!

If you want to go on an emotional roller-coaster, start by listening to A perfect Circle Judith. A perfect Circle is another of Manard's bands. Follow that up by listening to Tool Wings for Marie part 1 and 2. This is him singing songs about his mother, who had a medical condition that left her in a persistent vegetative state for almost 30 years, while never wavering even slightly in her devotion to her religion, even some of the people she went to church with would Wisper she got sick because she wasn't good enough. If you want to go for a hell of a ride, that's a great way to get deep into some tool. Just be warned, these are some seriously emotional songs.

This band is more of an experience, nothing is basic or straightforward with tool. It’s hard to understand the time signatures and polyrhythms unless you play music. The more you listen the more you’ll learn and understand. I think you may enjoy a Tool song like Aenima or Lateralus better.
