So, this is about to be one long post. First off, as for this songs meaning, "Stinkfist" is a term used to describe the act of anal fisting and the lyrics use this as metaphor to how desensitised and numb society as become to the point that people look out for increasingly extreme experiences in order to "feel again" and how over time there's a need to increase the intensity of those acts/experiences. Over the course of the song you see this growing intensity reflected in the lyrics, since it starts with "Finger deep inside the borderline", then "Knuckle deep within the borderline", then "Elbow deep within the borderline" and finally "Shoulder deep within the borderline". Second, Tool music videos usually don't connect directly to the lyrics. They are produced and directed by Adam Jones, Tool's guitarist who previous to forming the band worked in Hollywood as an FX artist in blockbuster movies like "Predator 2" and "Jurassic Park", just to name a couple of the more widely known. Their videos serve more as standalone pieces of art that complement the music, but not attached to the lyrics, so you won't see the band in any of the videos, apart from their first ever video "Hush" that was made for their debut EP back in 1992. They don't have that many music videos and for their last 2 studio albuns the band only released one video. Most fans, me included, will usually advise reactors to not watch the music videos on a first listen as they can be quite overwhelming and make them not focus as much on the music as they should. Obviously this is just a recomendation and ultimately you should do as you please, but do bear that in mind. Their music is extremely complex and they're viewed by many as the modern day "Pink Floyd", since their sound is quite unique and there's really no other bands that sound like them or that they can actually be compared in this genre. Both songs you did are from their early times and can be seen as songs that have an average duration, but as you will soon find out, the regular Tool song is usually between 6min and 15min long. There's a lot more to find out with this band, but I think this is enough info for now as the rest will naturally come to you as dive into the deep rabbit hole that is Tool. Enjoy it, it's a worthwile journey.

If I am not mistaken, Tool did appear towards the end of the 'Sober' video. You can't really see them clearly due to them moving, blurring, darkness, and where the camera is aimed.

It's basically about the overstimulation we are bombarded with to the point that we lose our own senses and stop caring about important things ("How can this mean anything to me if I really don't feel anything at all?").

When i listen to Tool they have a unique sound that reminds me of music you might hear if you became lost in the jungle and wandered into a camp of natives performing a ritual around a campfire. Very tribal, dark, progressive, spiritual, and mildly occultish. A lovely mix

Adam Jones (guitar) of Tool is also a special effects wizard (he worked on the Arnold movie 'Terminator 2') and he also directed these Tool music videos w/ abstract and surreal scenarios... Like Pink Floyd before them, they did not want to be featured on Tool music videos. When Tool began in 1991 in California, they just wanted to make a 'joke' band (They named themselves after Jones' backyard tool shed 😂)... but after jamming a bit, Adam Jones recalled that Maynard James Keenan (vocals) could really sing... the band was rounded out by Danny Carey (drums) and Paul D'Amour (bass)... Initially, they recorded an EP 'Opiate' in 1992 and Tool were quickly approached by labels after Nirvana and Pearl Jam started breaking big... Tool sounded weird enough to be categorized as 'alternative rock' in the 90's and signed in '92 by Zoo Entertainment, which released the EP 'Opiate' as a prelude to a full album 'Undertow' that was released in 1993... Strangely, MTV put 2 animated Tool music videos on air ('Sober'... and 'Prison sex') and the album sold gold in the US (eventually platinum) Bassist Paul D'Amour did not like the band's musical approach going into prog rock and he quit Tool in 1995... The band hired Justin Chancellor (bass) in 1996 for the next album 'Aenima'... and 'Stinkfist' became a hit on MTV (Tool released it untitled and initially called it 'Track #1') and the album went platinum and charted in the US top 5 and even won a Grammy Award as Tool toured into 1998 w/ more special effects and a visual stage show... Maynard was not a typical vocalist - he would sing in the shadows at the back of the stage while Tool played live. There were issues going into 1999 as Tool split w/ their label and work on a new album was delayed by months... a frustrated Maynard started a new band - A Perfect Circle... w/ Billy Howerdel (guitar) and released their debut album 'Mer de noms' in 2000... it became a platinum success with the singles - 'Judith'... '3 Libras' ... 'The Hollow'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 In 2001, Tool finally emerged w/ a new album 'Lateralus' and the songs were longer and more prog rock... it shocked everyone by charting at #1 and selling 3x platinum... and pushed sales of all the Tool albums to 3x platinum as the band toured extensively... the singles were - 'Parabol/ Parabola' ... 'Schism' ... 'Lateralus' A Perfect Circle also released a new album 'Thirteenth step' in 2003 and was another platinum success. Tool took another 5 years to release a new album '10,000 days' in 2006 and it charted at #1 again and sold 2x platinum... w/ the singles - 'The Pot' ... 'Vicarious' ... 'Jambi' It would take 13 years for Tool to release any new music, even though the band toured consistently during that time... Maynard stayed creatively active and worked on other projects like Puscifer (a pop-oriented band) and new music by A Perfect Circle. In 2019, the extensive work on new music finally yielded a new Tool album 'Fear inoculum' and it charted at #1 again and Tool were back on tour and bigger than ever.

The song is about that we’ve been so desensitized by propaganda and media that we figuratively have to be fist-fucked just to feel anything.😂 You don’t want to watch the music videos. Tool is more about the music and they’re distracting. Plus the older videos are edited for TV and you don’t get to hear all the song/lyrics. The most popular song to react to is The Pot, but I think The Grudge, Lateralus, Vicarious, and Pushit are their best songs. As a singer, I think you would appreciate the vocals in those songs as well as Eulogy and H. There are some epic sustained notes/screams.

Oh, and also (I almost forgot), the signer is in 2 other bands: A Perfect Circle and his own side project called Puscifer. Check them out and react to them as well, if you'd like. You will be blown away at just how wide and convincing Maynard J. Keenan's singing style range is. If you didn't know it was him singing, it's hard to recognize his voice right away.

Been a Tool fan for 30 years. For me I always appreciated the music more than the lyrics. For years I didn’t even know all of the lyrics. Plus a lot of their songs are more symbolic and open to interpretation. Still there are some songs that are a bit more direct and they tap into some really primal emotions. I would recommend listening to the songs without the official video. The videos are trippy and are almost a separate extension of their artistry. Other Tool songs worth checking out: Bottom Crawl Away Undertow 4 Degrees Hooker with a Penis Pushit H Eulogy Jambi Lateralus The Grudge The Pot Right in Two

I've heard the song many times, and owned the album for many long years. Doesn't mean I've ever understood the lyrics very well. They get very philosophical, and the music is extremely progressive and complex. For future Tool songs, I'd look at '46 and 2', and 'Schism'.

Tool stopped doing videos after this album. For the most and few official videos out there, guitarist Adam Jones created them tapping into his SFX background skillz. But simply put, Tool videos are added as another layer. They're not meant to be 1-to-1 storytelling. Think of it as the visuals are another instrument and it's going off on its own polyrhythmic melody. Just assume that going in. As a singer yourself, I reco' "Sober" live, Reading '93 to see how Maynard does his thing.

TOOL is an anomaly among American metal bands. There is really nothing else here that sounds like them. They are actually an alternative prog-rock/metal band. And yes, a lot of their videos are like this, but not all. Their lyrics don't really pair with their videos. The videos are made by their guitarist, Adam Jones -- who was a Hollywood special effects artist. He worked on such films as Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park 2, as well as others.
