@malcolmsmith35902 жыл бұрын
So interesting comparing this to their later work. Undertow in my opinion is the most accessible tool album. it’s the easiest for a new listener to catch on too and once you do the following albums will just blow your fucking mind. it took me a while to get into tool but for the past 3 months i’ve been obsessed, and it all started with completely listening to undertow. So fucking heavy. every single song will blow your fucking face off and it’s awesome. The bass on this whole album is fucking phenomenal. simple, yet so punchy and is the driving force behind every single song. Every song is so unhinged and aggressive in the best possible way. how they managed to get this kind of sound of their first E.P and Undertow amazes me. if you asked who the best band of all time was 3 months ago i would’ve said zeppelin, but this is close. i think i’m convinced tool is the greatest of all time.

Those pick scratches on the bass at 2:50 are way harder than they sound. You have to do it behind the nut, and the extreme tension at which the already thick ass strings are makes it very hard to drag the pick through them without skipping and missing them, breaking up the rhythm. Not to mention the awkward position your arm has to be in.

Musically, Undertow is a lot more straightforward than the rest of their albums, but you can hear so many glimpses of what the band will become throughout it. 2:49 is a perfect example of this. That part sounds like it's straight off Aenima.
