Somewhere on KZbin there’s a movie/documentary on the production of all their albums earliest to latest up to 10k days (I think). They speak with the sound engineers on what was goin on during the albums and what each of the members wanted sound and style wise. It a really good glimpse at their creative design and where they get their influence from (aside from tripping balls). In terms of how they record; at least for the ladder albums, Adam, Danny, and Justin each write different riffs, piece them together, and record together. Then, they send it to Maynard and he fills it in with lyrics.

@@jerryGorillaz Dude, Bruce D has different style of screaming. If you would ask him to scream grudge, the same way as Maynard did, he would probably shit his pants. It doesn't ofcourse mean, that Bruce D is a bad singer. Maynard screams take alot of air, if they are 25 sec. long, and lower screaming is harder than the highier. How do I know that? Because when I scream lower, I can only least 14 sec., but when I'm scream highier, then it can stay for 22 sec. That's just my opinion.

It's age. Beyond the age of about 40-45 the vocal chords become less pliant and don't recover as quickly. Add that to the fact that Tool isn't as active as younger bands, and an aggressive touring schedule, and you have a singer who has to pace himself. Plus, let's hear YOUR "Grudge" scream. Danny has said the grudge is the hardest song for him endurance wise, so it makes sense that its the opener lol. The reason tool sounds so unique is because of how the rhythm section is overly emphasized! most ppl don't realize how important bass n drums truly are to a bands sound because alot of bands hide the bass and turn the bass down to where u can barely even hear it, or getting rid of it completely (metallica injustice album).. however when u highlight that often underutilized and abused section, u will notice that a bands core sound lives n dies by the rhythm section! Flea n Chad, Neil and giddy, Kinney and inez/Starr, fieldy n silveria, myung n portnoy.
