I tell apprentices to look after their tools, even the simplest screwdriver or whatever, because you develop a feel for them and they become more comfortable / efficient / effective to use. They look at you like you are from another planet, but every one of the experts said the same, whatever their favourite tool, “it feels good / right / …”

Carding cloth comes in 5 grades: 54, 72, 90, 120, and 190 TPI (teeth per square inch). That sounds the sort of thing they're looking for. I think it's normally sold in 12" widths for drum carders and blending boards and there maybe a minimum order. An online search for carding cloth should produce a few suppliers. If they know what grade they have they could buy some or maybe get offcuts to replace what they currently use. I'm not sure how they'd find out how soft it is.

Talking to Dean reminded me of the old joke about the man who took his shoes to the cobbler to be repaired. On the way home he's attracted by a sign and joins the merchant navy. He comes home 6 years later and when going through the pockets of his old coat he finds the cobblers repair ticket. Out of curiousity he visits the shop and hands the ticket in. "Just a minute" says the cobbler and goes into the back of the shop. He returns a few minutes later and says, "they'll be ready on tuesday" 😂😂

I know I am very late, but I just watched this video. I went looking for a carding brush. I found a Velvet carding brush. I thought if it was gentle enough for velvet it would work for you. I am from the States. I found it from a company Aramsco. It is $25.78 US dollars. I am sure you have already found one. Just wanted to pass it on. I also want to tell you how much I enjoy watching the two of you bring back these beautiful stuffed animals back to life. I have a small brown bear, named TedTed, that I wish I could bring to you both. After watching, maybe I can try and fix myself. Love the whole crew.

Steve Fletcher holds up the first tool that I ever bought myself. I picked-up one of those little ratchet screwdrivers from Woolworth's with some of the cash from my very first ever pay packets. cherished the little screwdriver for many years but then suddenly it just seemed to disappear. Then many years later I rediscovered it buried in the grass my parents garden, much to my surprise the ratchet still worked perfectly even thought the blade itself was exceeding rusted and most of the pint had parted company with the wooden handle. I pretty sure it's still tucked away in the "old tool" box out in the garage now. I'm getting on a bit now but the sight of that screwdriver brought back pleasant memories; I'd better dig it out, and put with the gear that's eventually going to accompany me in my box on my final journey.

For your Bear ladies - Look into Japanese made thread scissors and the small solid steel forged craft scissors. I work with canvas, leather, and even very light materials and there is nothing made that cuts nearly as cleanly and precise. As with all high quality Japanese made tools, their craftsmanship is second to none. Look for handmade products, to this day, they forge some of the finest steels and take absolute pride in the quality of what they make.

My dad was a tool guy. After he died, my sis and I were stuck on how to keep his collection intact…when we had tight deadlines to get back to business 3,000 miles across country. Fortunately, we found an ideal solution…the longtime neighbor, a gifted baker who then transformed into a gifted old-house wallpaper expert…accepted the whole collection…on one collection. Her accountant husband threatened to move out if she acquired one more tool. Fortunately it was tax season, and he was at the office more than usual..,

Lovely episode Dom. I love Steve's grandfather's what I'm pretty sure is a Stanley 4" ratchet, I did have one of those but I lost it many years ago. Probably inside an Organ somewhere that I was putting back together after it was rebuilt. And probably found by another organ builder in the last 20 years lol I also had the big brother of Steve's one I think they had 8" long blades not including the handle with about a 3/8" wide tip suitable for number 10 and 12 wood screws, not the crappy things we get nowadays but proper Nettlefolds wood screws. Shows you how old I am lol. Happy Christmas and New Year to Everybody at the Repair Shop and to you in particular Dom

Hello Dom, I got some hints for you 😉 … The changeable flat and phillips screwdriver for Lucias Christmas gift is easy to find in the factory toolbox (mostly at the spare wheel) of older VW cars. I love them too 😬. The german stuffing stick of Amanda seems to me more like a pricking tool to harvest asparagus or in german „Spargelstecher“. And for Julies carding brush, there could be a substitute available at the pet shop for brushing the fur of cats and dogs, as they have softer ones that have similar „hooks“. Hope this can help and Happy Holidays to all of you! 🎄✨

Brilliant. I’ve had my coffin fitters hammer since I was 17. It was 20 years old when my dad gave it to me. There’s one more box to use it on😅PS I’m 72. That’s a clue. Merry Christmas to all at the Repair Shop, and all the people that Dom has introduced. Happy New Year to to you all.🎉

I use soft-backed pet grooming brushes for carding my flocking wool, which I purchased in my local pet store, they are quite soft because they are meant to be used on small domestic pets - and I got my flocking irons from Abbey Tools. They come in straight styles like Amanda's stuffing tool and curved for getting right into the awkward crevices.
