Really like that you're spotlighting alternative brands. The Internet makes it so much easier to research, buy and save a butt load of money on tools. When I started out, the choices were tool trucks, Sears, or questionable junk from the local hardware store.

Snap on's new ratchet wrenches are way thinner and the teeth are finer. I don't have a full set. I just bought the sizes I need because sometimes the gearwrench head is too fat.

Gearwrench chrome 6 point sockets are probably the best bang for the buck in the entire industry. No skips and shallow broach on the deep sockets. All I have and use for 1/4 and 3/8.

I love my xl gearwrench flexhead wrenches but have broken a few of the inner rings already, and this is just home mechanic stuff. But...i do use them almost exclusively for everythibg. Break free with fixed and then work it off with flex ratcheting. I like that they came out with the 21 22 and 24mm XL too. Really nice for alignment work

I work in a fleet shop for a local railroad, and before we got our government deal with Matco the tools and boxes provided for us were Gearwrench. Only problem we had were their breaker bars. Warranty by mail took a long time, but we still have all the tool sets.

All of my chrome sockets in 1/4” and 3/8” are Gearwrench, I use their flex ratchets in all sizes, and have the flex head ratcheting wrenches as well. I love my Gearwrench tools! Awesome value and I haven’t broken any yet. I have another brand’s impact sockets in 8/10/12 mm but for any other size I use the Gearwrench chrome sockets on my M12 Fuel 1/4” impact and they hold up just fine.

My main set of wrenches are the 120xp combination with the flex head. Been using then for 4 years and they’ve held up great. Very solid ratcheting mechanism, never had a skip. Only issues is the flex head starts flopping around when you put some torque on the smaller wrenches, but that’s common in any flex head.

My Matco dealer actually gave up matco and now runs a gear-wrench truck! I deal with snap on and Cornwell still but I’ve been picking up some decent GW stuff I personally am not a huge fan of those chrome swivels i just don’t like the U-joint style! However I got a set of their impact swivels and I love them! Guy I work with has The snap-on swivels and I honestly think the GW set gets in more places and out performs them! I also recommend the GW ratchets to all the up and coming techs out there! You can buy a set of 3 for the price of 1 matco or snap on and I think that there pretty close if not as good quality!

i have the blue point set of ratcheting reversible wrenches up to 19mm, i added 21, 22, 24 and 27 gear wrench ratcheting wrenches for front end stuff. and then i bought the stubby gear wrench ratcheting set. my sockets are all snap on , i have napa, kobalt, harbor freight sockets as back up sockets ( standard sockets ) that i used til i upgraded to snap on sets. but i hang on to them cuz well if i break the snap on or lose it, i have backups to keep on working. over all i have all brands of tools i buy what i need to buy from the tool trucks and things i dont think i need to spend that kind of money on i buy from hardware stores, northern tool , harbor frieght, etc , alot from OTC online, amazon online, summit racing online. some things its worth investing in via tool trucks for that warranty and quality , some tools you dont use that often or worry about get else where and save $$$

I have the Gearwrench, reversible ratcheting wrench sets in Metric and SAE. The first time I used the 1/2" wrench the innards of the ratcheting end fell out, fortunately I was able to warranty it. I've have had the mechanism on the 14mm lock up a few times. I told myself, "Self, don't buy anymore Gearwrench!" With that being said the Gearwench 3/8", swivel-head ratchet I ordered should be in early next week. So, it's either Everything Man-made will break or I'm a glutton for punishment. Which do you reckon, FRM? If the woes continue with the ratchet I'll throw it away and go to NAPA and get the Carlyle version.

Those original Gearwrench sets are very rare and were made much better, shame about the metric set. I have a set from the early 2000's and compared it to sets from now. The ratcheting mechanism is much smoother, the open ends have tighter tolerances and even the color of the metal is different. Just curious, is there an A on them? I believe this is a date code.

And too answer your question about why guys would buy gear wrench from the tool Trucks! I’m thinking it’s the reason why you buy anything from a tool truck (besides quality) it’s the fact you can make that 30$ weekly payment! I’ve been turning wrench for a long time but I sold my tools and got out of it professionally for a long time! So this year when I stared out again I had to start low and prove my self! And I didn’t start with a very high pay rate that’s for sure! And yeah I would Have got a lot of stuff off line and saved 100s of $$$$s buy I didn’t have the upfront scratch to do so! So I had to do it the old fashioned way and make my 40$ a week payment to all the tool Trucks! Is it the best way? No absolutely not!!! But some times it’s the only way! Anyway happy 4th buddy I love this channel keep up the great content

Good spotlight. I would add that they're not just an alternative, they are the same as some Tool truck tools. Gearwrench is mad by Apex Tool Group who also makes many Matco tools, especially ratcheting wrenches. It has been a production deal for most Matco branded tools that are no longer has made in the USA. I have USA Made Matco Ratcheting wrenches made in the Danaher days which are different. I also have Matco and Gearwrench ratcheting . . . identical. Any rebranded, non-usa made tool sold by a Tool Truck brand, whether it be Snap-On, Matco, Cornwell, is purely a lie and a con.

I bought the big set of GW Metric ratchet wrenches because the price of the SO is crazy. I am very disappointed with them. The reversing lever is sticking on the 12, 17, and 21 and causes the gear to bind. Is anyone else out there having this problem? None of my older GW ratchet wrenches had this problem. After the frustration I bit the bullet and got the SO and I love them.. I also have the metric & sae 1/4 sockets and have been quite satisfied with them.

Hey Mike - nice video. How about a vid on a scan tool for the diy’er? Maybe in the $500 range? Thanks.

The problem for me is i don't own anything in that range, and no one wants to send me one for a video

Is that spline drive worth a damn when breaking bolts loose? I've got both sets of ICON double box ends one with the ratcheting flex ends and one with fixed ends but I would like to get this set of wrenches because they would do both functions in single wrenches.

Agreed. My OCD goes into overdrive if I lose a socket. I seriously have to shutdown work until that renegade socket is found.

@@nate851 and another pet peeve is these companies that sell incomplete wrench sets (like missing the 16 and 20 mm wrenches). Thank God for Amazon or I would go nuts

First, Great Vids, Thanks for doing them. Can you review the Gearwrench Flex head ratchet set?

I like the brand very much. I was told that the ones sold in discount stores have a different ratchet mechanism than the “premium” ones sold on the tool trucks. Is there any truth to that? My favorites are my double-box end gearwrenches. I couldn’t see buying combination wrenches when I have plenty of wrenches with open-ends
