First time hearing this song was when I was a young teen in 2006. It was on the drive home from the shops here in Melbourne, Australia. I was in the passenger seat holding a Xbox game copy of GTA: San Andreas reading the manual. I was telling dad to change the station as I was unhappy with live radio talk shows until we stumbled across the opening to this song on a random music station. Dad said in Filipino, "let's keep it on, it's building up to something..." He wasn't wrong! We were both blown away by music we were totally unfamiliar with. Next day, we came back to the shops and ended up buying the album to listen to. I couldn't be more grateful for such memorable times. Nowadays it's hard to find a band or music to this standard. I feel they don't make music like this anymore. Anyway, any suggestions of modern bands I'm missing out on would be f**king awesome!

My dad used this as his morning alarm my entire childhood. Every morning I new my dreams were over and I had to go to school when the first notes of this started playing. I used to hate this song and it gave me anxiety every time I heard it for a very long time... being the sound that forced me to get out of bed and go to school every single morning for years. After all this time I stumbled upon it on KZbin and after the initial shock and flashbacks that I got I'm going to say that it is a masterpiece of a song and I'm glad that my dad picked this as the tune that started off all my mornings back in the day.

The lyrics of this one are a heavy trip. As humans we all have a hardwired capacity for hate, selfishness, violence and the like. But we also have the capacity for love, courage, kindness, and gratitude. At the end of the day, we do have the choice to feed one or the other, we must remember that. But that is the curse of the animal world, it has no concept of these things. Animals have no bloodlust as we know the term, nor the ability to appreciate beauty. Their blessing is they are in perfect harmony with nature, which also happens to be the true curse of us humans, that we are not. Much love to you all

I can’t be the only one. Seriously, this chorus gets me high every time it hits. Something about the part.... 2:22 cuz I need to watch THINGS die.....when “things” hits, with that guitar part, it’s like injected into my veins. God damn this band is the best.

This song shows that Adam Jones is one of the kings of musical efficiency. That main verse riff is just an open D coupled with a higher A, then A#, and ending on a C. With only one fret per chord he makes a power chord, a minor sixth, and a minor seventh, becore ending on just an F power chord for resolution. It's deceptively complex. Everyone raves about Carey, but Carey's immense skill is generally obvious. With Jones you really need to analyze what he's doing.

the artists that make up all three bands are one of a kind. no one will ever come close, as for TOOL there are no words to describe the genius, artistry. This band is truly one of a kind and I thank God for allowing Maynard to share is art, his passion with the world and most definitely myself.....i pray they keep going until they just can't anymore

This album was the sountrack of my holiday in Germany, just within the last 14 days. Played this album over and over while driving to and around my idylic holiday address. This already was my favorite album ever, but in the last two years I have listened to Fear Inoculum non stop. Now I have renewed my appreciation for this album as well, can never get enough of this music no matter how often it plays. Tool fan 4ever.

Lyrics Eye on the TV 'Cause tragedy thrills me Whatever flavor It happens to be like "Killed by the husband" "Drowned by the ocean" "Shot by his own son" "She used the poison in his tea" And kissed him goodbye That's my kind of story It's no fun 'til someone dies Don't look at me like I am a monster Frown out your one face But with the other Stare like a junkie Into the TV Stare like a zombie While the mother Holds her child Watches him die Hands to the sky crying "Why, oh why?" 'Cause I need to watch things die From a distance Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies You all need it too, don't lie Why can't we just admit it? Why can't we just admit it? We won't give pause until the blood is flowing Neither the brave nor bold The writers of stories sold We won't give pause until the blood is flowing I need to watch things die From a good safe distance Vicariously, I live while the whole world dies You all feel the same so Why can't we just admit it? Blood like rain come down Drum on grave and ground Part vampire Part warrior Carnivore and voyeur Stare at the transmittal Sing to the death rattle La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie Credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen Shouldn't have to say it all again The universe is hostile, so Impersonal. Devour to survive So it is, so it's always been We all feed on tragedy It's like blood to a vampire Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies Much better you than I

My favourite Tool song by far. Super unique intro and sound, and the lyrics both sound great and are straightforward. I actually think the lyrics and the meaning of the song are now more relevant than ever. Drums are crazy good as always I should add. Amazing cymbals.

I'll never forget that moment when I was 14 (I'm 28 now)... I'm an awkward teenager listening to my local alternative rock radio station and I just hear this eerie, hypnotic guitar riff followed by a school bell. Suddenly I'm captivated by this music and in a day and age where the radio DJ won't always tell you what song play nor did I have a smartphone with which I could use Shazam, all I can think is...I need to find out who the fuck did this song. Finally I discovered Tool, and that's when THE BINGE began. Tool is my favorite band

Tool always seemed to be both heavy yet soft. Their lyrics and musicality are always top tier and their message rings true today. Their sound is like being bludgeoned to death by a sledgehammer wrapped in velvet. This particular song evokes a tragic but true commentary on today's world. I can almost picture a field mouse scurrying through a snowy field at night unaware of being stalked by an owl whose talons are about to defend on it...

Saw the documentary for this song. Apparently the song is (from what I recall so I may be leaving things out) about humans deviating from the experiences of primal violence when it’s one of our ways of connecting to the universe as we are inherently vicious. Media dissociates us from our ancient witnessing of bloodshed. Death isn’t a concept that television has drawn us to engage in, but a real thing, possibly more “real” than our physical, living and breathing states. From a certain angle surrendering to the universe means accepting death and it can truly be terrible but also the currents of life/death forces that life forms have to embrace for existence to…well, exist. Destruction has always been part of reality and that “order” (because it’s always been) is also chaotically dark. I haven’t heard this song in years and it sends shivers down my spine but it also makes me understand that that reflex connects me to my animal self, that humans ultimately are (kudos to Gojira)

@Bryce This is a pretty good point -- while we do have a tendency to dwell on tragedies, it's also for the same reason we treat history so important, because it actually helps us avoid making mistakes of the past. If we know what's going on in the world and we're awake to it, we'll probably be better prepared for the same thing that could very well happen to us too.
