Mill stone. There was a mill right down the road from our farm. Mundis Mill was built in 1799. The stones sat outside as decorations, as they stopped using those sometime in the early 1890's. The paddle wheel was destroyed in the flood of 32, along with the remnants of the canal along Codorus Creek, in York county Pennsylvania, which met the Susquehanna River canal.

It’s a mill. They place another stone on top the size of the first one, with a slot in it that matches the turn bolt, so the stones will spin against each other, only being pulled together by gravity, rather than mechanical force. See those etching in the stone? The top stone has similar etchings running the opposite direction, and they run grain between the two stones. This grinds the grain into flour. This is what and actual “windmill” back in the day was for, grinding things to make powders.

One of the owners wives had her dress caught in one of the wheels and was actually killed, and he is reputed to be a haunting ghost in the museum
