I just don’t know what it is about Maynard’s voice- the technicality, vocal range, theatrics, dynamism, style, screams, belting, it’s like the dude has EVERYTHING in one voice. But the biggest factor is the enormous amount of empathy he communicates through his voice. Every single time I understand what he’s going through in the lyrics, and every time I go into that journey, I am transformed.

TOOL will always be the band that I cite as the heaviest. I don’t care if a metal band’s guitars are tuned down to C, or if their vocals are distorted, or if their lyrics are apocalyptic. That’s all artificial. TOOL hits so much harder, despite having angelic vocals and treble turned up on the bass. Take away their amplification and effects, and they sound heavy acoustic. It’s the composition of the music as well as the emotion and impact of the lyrics.
