It’s amazing to me the push for the future back in the late 70s and early 80s however we had it so good then, what were we thinking. I remember when the last years of the 80s clicked off, especially 1989, something special was OVER. Too bad!

@@ajs41 Oh, you'd best believe he worked hard on fine-tuning his Received Pronunciation! Always the colossally self-assured, aspirational perfectionist, our 'friend' David Sylvian (né David Alan Batt, but transformed in name by deed poll at the remarkable age of seventeen.) The pregnant pause in this incomparable performance is breathtaking. Anyone else suspect that when Sylvian first presented this song to the other members of Japan, it probably sounded very much like this version? The studio version has Richard Barbieri's atmospheric sounds stamped all over it. My question is why didn't Barbieri get a co-writing credit for this song? In fact why doesn't he receive a single songwriting credit for any Japan studio album track? Jansen received a co-writing credit for Canton/Visions of China & Karn for Sons of pioneers (all Tin Drum).
@stevecarter28762 жыл бұрын
Sylvian was composing on keyboards,so it may have sounded very different to this acoustic version. Barbieri had his own credit for Width Of A Room (the Gentlemen Take Polaroids EP)

Watching the interview here it is so apparent where Nick Rhodes got his style from. If you watch interviews with Nick, you can see his facial expressions, mannerisms, and way of speaking are all very similar to David's. I became a fan of Japan in 1982 when I read that DD had been influenced by Japan, so I decided to check out their music. DD even wanted David S. to produce their first album, but he wasn't interested. Both Japan and DD are two of my favorite bands to this day. Nick is still the greatest keyboard player of all time, though. Wish he and David would do some kind of project together. I'm sure it would be awesome.

Yes Nick owes a few nods to David for the look, and for the love of photography. Both have released books of photos (or in Nick's case... book). I think they share the same likings in art too. But after that, the similarities end. DD and Arcadia did pull a few inspirations from Japan though. In fact, the funniest review I ever read was about the release of the Arcadia and Power Station albums. The critich wrote something like " well now we know which members of DD like Japan and Roxy Music and which ones like Chic and T. Rex.
