I remember doing a drydock as an Engineer on a ship in Bremen, when I was in the Merchant Navy, in the very late 70's early 80's. The shore crew started at 07:00 and called us lazy Brits, because we didn't start till 08:00. They then left the ship at about 15:30, didn't see us working till 21/22:00, or indeed on Saturday morning. When we finally got some time off on Saturday afternoon, Bremen was shut. Sunday was worse. I'm glad to see Stefan is not keeping the old ways going.

Favourite moments: Soundtrack when walking to the surface grinder was a highlight, thanks for that. Would make a good ringtone I think. Second was seeing the result from the customer's workshop on how the tool performed, really helped with the context. My initial thought was cutting o-ring grooves, but that didn't correlate with grinding the flank of the insert, so the customer images helped me to understand. Disappointed not to see the radius measurement that we were teased with in the thumbnail, but I'll get over it.

Thanks for Your general discussion about the usefulness of different grinders, very interesting. The BEMA seems very versatile with the tilting head. In practice I seem so far to use the D-bit grinder for most stuff second my old J&S 540 surface grinder. Always wanted a T&C grinder, but I should perhaps reconsider that. One of my best buys ever is Nikons smallest shadowgraph projector with digital scales, it gets used all the time despite having several microscopes in the shop. Very nice microscope btw.

If your gonna make the magnetic base camera arm like Robin have then you could mount a thin sheet of metal that's highly magnetic on the ceiling so the camera don't need and floor space at all Just turn on magnet and slap it on the ceiling. Then adjust and som kind of mechanism with a string that you pull to turn the magnet off agen well holding the arm with the other hand

Love that spin fixture but they are expensive. I really like the way you set it up to set the stick-out via gage blocks. I think I could maybe do that job on my D-bit grinder with your holding jig but with the slot for the cutter being 1mm offset to move the cutter relative to the center of rotation. I would need a double-end jig, one for left and one for right with that. Such nice work--thank you for sharing and sparking ideas!

"If I had to choose and could only have one grinder in my shop, it would be a surface grinder." What if a Moore Linear Form Grinder actually came up for sale? They're a weird surface grinder with a pantograph-attached diamond dresser AND a (possibly simultaneous) crush wheel dresser. Obsolete thanks to CNC grinders, but very cool and more versatile than a regular surface grinder.
@StefanGotteswinter
@StefanGotteswinter Ай бұрын
Nope! I know about them from the moore book, but a Diaform wheel dresser would be a way more practical approach compared to crush forming. My old dayjob still had a bunch of them around and in use, mounted on Jung HF surface grinders - Despite having state of the art Jung CNC grinders.

Stefan, what did you dress the diamond wheel with? It looked like wax possibly. It didn't look like something to clean it, since it left a white residue on the diamond. Thanks.
@StefanGotteswinter
@StefanGotteswinter Ай бұрын
Thats an aluminium oxide dressing stick (looks and feels like a bench stone, but has a very soft bond), it dresses back the resin binder and exposes the diamond on resin wheels. Its not ment to shape or true the wheel, that has to be done with a brake dresser or by grinding molybdenium or soft steel.

I noticed that you were using the back of the wheel on the second edge. I heard there's a risk of the edge chiping when the wheel spins that way because the carbide is not supported. Was this an issue or does it not happen?
@StefanGotteswinter

Thats totaly an issue and real - In an ideal case I would prefer the spindle to run in reverse then. But it is what it is, the ultra fine diamond wheel did well enough in this situation.

What are your thoughts on the 100 to 200 buck gauge block sets from red china?
