Part two of two in a short series about making tools from not-so-choice stock. In this part, I make a 4oz ball peen jewelers hammer from a railroad spike, and scrap wood, utilizing the punch and drift I made in part one.

I was thinking "crafting videos are nice and relaxing, and Adrian seems like a calming presence, maybe I could fall asleep to his video!" It took him three seconds to bust out an angle grinder.

love it, the sound of a forge and hammering, if you're an elvish smith, I'm definitly a half dwarven half orc steel whacker. steel puncher? no, maybe iron pounder, perhaps The Artist formerly known to love hitting metal. please, do come back and bring more knowledge to us poor people who can't follow their dreams anymore, dream for us!

is it actually called a ball peen? theres no way
@TheElfsmith
@TheElfsmith 2 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, it really is! The term "peen" in this context means the side of a hammer opposite the main face- so you get cross peens, diagonal peens, straight peens, ball peens, point peens, and so on and so forth!

Hey! I am, but not only am I notoriously bad at social media, but also have put things on hold for a bit for a couple different reasons. Despite them being on hold, they're not forgotten, I promise.

Why are railroad spikes so commonly salvaged for making tools?
@TheElfsmith
@TheElfsmith 2 жыл бұрын
They're cheap, a good size, easy to work under a hammer, and when water quenched, can get somewhat hard.

It gives me a fuzzy feeling inside when someone says they're hopeless at social media. I idea there are beautiful talented people out there who aren't cybernetic narcissists, revives my flagging faith in humanity. Long may you continue not updating your profiles. (Although that Puss'n'Boots outfit on Instagram is kinda stunning...)
