Mahalo for the video guys. Always good to get some tips on tool usage! Hope you guys are doing well. Some possible video ideas: 1. General info on tree varieties and your experiences getting them to grow there 2. General video on clearing raw land by hand from start to finish 3. Update on how much of your own food you generate and which sources are the most prolific

Awesome video, I'm glad I have all those tools minus the wheelbarrow. I too own property in the Puna district, I can't wait to get on the island and start clearing land. If the universe works as I like, should be there middle of September. Keep the videos coming.

Useful info. I have an o’o bar. Now I know to bring it. Breakfast @ tin shack then a Go pro on a bike along gov beach road from say makkuu tidepools or Hawaiian beaches to 4 corners with music would be a nice meditative video🌈😃🤙

Bro have you considered using a hedge trimmer for clearing it can kinda get after some of the smaller strawberry guava and you have alot more control so it basically make accidentally girdling trees a non issue it also works well with cane grass and you can kinda fine chop in aluhe also never have to buy string

I’d like to see a video about pruning fruit trees, when, where, why, what you are looking to achieve in pruning and why it helps the tree.

Yes! one of my favorite topics. There is a little bit in one of the freebird videos. I’m not sure which one though.

Another great wheelbarrow is the black rubbermaid that you can find at Home Depot, Dells or Ace - cheapest at Home Depot.

At 7:29, a lesson we all learn the hard way..lol! Good video on tools. Have you experienced any problems with vermin? For those who are new to or coming to Puna, a video addressing this would be good. Those pesky mongoose.
@OffGridHawaii5 жыл бұрын
Hasn’t really been a problem for us. But the rats will eat your food and the mongoose will eat baby chickens 🐓
@homesteadfarms53155 жыл бұрын
Oh the rats. They eat our avocados and bananas if we let them ripen too much on the tree
@peterbaer87155 жыл бұрын
Rats will also eat lilikoi and can strip a tamarillo tree of fruit in a few days. Pheasants and other birds, especially cardinals, will go through a rack of bananas in no time. Cardinals will also tear up seedlings and love Hawaiian chili peppers. The doves will eat any poultry, cat or dog food that is available.

I borrowed my neighbour's cheap wheelbarrow and broke it, so I replaced it with the top of the line steel one. Now I feel free to borrow it all the time. ;-)

Enjoyed the video Mike, thanks for the info. Have you ever worked with a Hori Hori knife for small projects?
@OffGridHawaii5 жыл бұрын
I had to google to see what it was. I don’t do much weeding but it looks very helpful for getting weeds out. 🤔

OffGridHawaii My wife uses the heck out of ours for weeding and planting. We just listed our home in Oregon and when it sales we’ll have our downpayment for some land. I’ll shoot y’all an email soon about scoping out some land for us.

I had a couple of questions! Why did you pick that particular spot in Puna? I’ve noticed you can get some pretty cheap spots in that area where (I think) you guys are. Was it just financial? I realize there’s plenty of rain to grow anything there, but… What would be your dream spot on the Big Island? (to grow fruit trees) Is being closer to Hilo more desirable? (just to be closer to things?) What do you think of Kona? Are there any wholesalers who would buy your fruit? (verses selling it a farmers market)
@OffGridHawaii5 жыл бұрын
We like to visit kona side but would rather live on Hilo side.

Not sure if you have stopped making videos, but I have a question and maybe you could address this question in one of your videos should you resume; 1. What do you do with your pet waste? Do you have a process? Thanks
