It is okay to use weaker for trigger time, just as it is okay to dry fire for trigger time. The thing I would do would be to shoot a mag of full bore/carry at the end of a session, always on multiple targets at varying ranges. If one changes ammo at the end of a year, or whatever interval they choose, of carry, those rounds should be expended in a drill that simulates a deadly encounter.

Good info Tools. I can see using this stuff for the range but with the caveat that it's just junk ammo for play. When I was working in the gun store I always told people to get extra defensive loads and shoot it so you know what it's going to feel like and know how it will perform in your gun. I agree with your opinion of those rounds, really weak for the supposedly "high powered" 10 mmm. I could do just as good, maybe slightly better, with a 40 cal. I feel it depends on the person, if the full house hits within 1-2” of the practice ammo, practice with your firearms till you can do it with your eyes closed and constantly hit the targets as easy as you can breath. Use the lighter stuff to train. I shoot at a federal range, it is near the house. 60% of the shooters are the spray and pray category huge card board box at 5’ and can’t consistently hit it. Back in the day I shot 1000+ rounds a week in competition, I get stairs when I am shooting my GP-100 at 25 meters and getting quarter sized groups single handed. Practice, know the gun and ammo, be one with the firearm.

The problem is people out there with their double and triple taps with this watered down garbage thinking they're "proficient." It's a whole different world with full power 10mm. Practicing with this garbage in no way prepares you for full power 10mm. Same as .38 Special is night and day from full power .357. If you're already proficient and practice with the more powerful rounds, that's a different story than someone running nothing but this low powered junk and thinking it's gonna be the same story when they run the real stuff.
@robertseafield5810 Жыл бұрын
Your trigger pull and sight picture is essential to accuracy. At home, a lot of combat competition shooters practice with no ammo. They dry fire with laser systems. Years ago I was shooting combat at 2 clubs. I practiced with 22lr conversions in the 1911. I also had an AR-15 22lr for rifle competition. This system really works. And saves you a lot of money. I would have used the laser system, but they were not out yet. I used 230 gr ball equivalent 45 ACP handloads for competition. On the other hand, you are right about the 10mm. It does have a pretty good snap with full loads. If someone chooses this round for carry, they would have to practice a lot to get used to the recoil when shooting fast. Anything that slows you down too much could be a problem. Good video. Col. Jeff Cooper theorized that a 200 gr flat point 40 cal bullet at 1200 fps would be the ultimate "manstopper". Since the Alaskans started using a similar 10mm load to successfully stop Grizzly Bears, he might be right.

I bought a case of the 1776 brand 10mm with 125gr composite (?) frangible ammo. It runs about 1250 fps from a 4" M&P 2.0 10mm; exactly what a Winchester 9mm NATO 124gr runs from a G34. So, as a 10mm for power, it's kinda useless. But it gives single digit extreme spreads. So it's a great target load. That Blazer might also be amazing for target or competition work. Find the bright spots where you can 😅
@matthewtalich9989 Жыл бұрын
I've noticed this with allot of heavy calibers. The training ammo is wildly different from the service/defensive grade ammo. Similar problems in 45acp. I've found the best way to compensate is to somewhat regularly expel carry loads when wrapping up range visits while only using target fmj to supplement volume or as a warm up. Not to mention its good to expel old ammo you don't want to rely your life on old ammo even if it was premium when you bought it. I actually know a guy who curses a reputable brand of ammo as unreliable because he had a fail to fire but he often forgets to mention that it was with ammo he carried every day for nearly a decade.

Back when dinosaurs walked the earth and revolvers were standard issue to most law enforcement agencies it was very common for departments to utilize full wadcutter (target) ammo for qualification purposes while issuing 125grn SJHP and/or 158grn LSWCHP +P ammo to the "troops" for duty carry. The only time an officer "trained" with the duty ammo was maybe once a year when the old duty ammo was rotated out for fresh stuff while the full wadcutter ammo remained the standard for qualification purposes. Spent cases were policed up, military style, and sent off to one then major reloading company for "credit" toward the purchase of more full wadcutter training ammo.

PPU ammo just sucks. I've got a couple boxes of 185 gr 45 acp HPs and honestly they're not much better than plain ol FMJs. The lead is way too hard to expand and bullets lose their jackets. That's the only kinda pro with that stuff. Two holes with one shot might make a teeny bit of difference. I'd advise everybody to only use PPU ammo for target practice unless that's the only thing you've possibly got. A 45 hole is still a 45 hole. Personally I'll stick with higher priced proven ammo because my life is priceless .

The original design requirement for 10mm Auto was for a 200-grain bullet fired from a 5" barrel to have an impact velocity of at least 1000 feet per second at 50 meters. That gives it an impact velocity of 444 energy foot pounds. Of course, only one of these rounds even has a 200-grain bullet to begin with, and it performed pretty poorly. To know if you have *true* 10mm ammo, you need to know how fast it's going at 50 meters so you can calculate the energy there, as that gives you a data point you can compare regardless of bullet weight and velocity. What you can deduce from velocity and energy at the muzzle is that if it's below 444 fpe at the muzzle, it's definitely going to be below it at 50 meters. The S&B, PPU, and PMC can be written off right away. They're below 444 fpe at the muzzle. They're definitely not going to be going faster at 50 meters than they are at the muzzle, so they're done. I sincerely doubt that the SinterFire ammo would retain enough velocity to be at or above 444 fpe at 50 meters. The Blazer and Armscor might maybe retain enough velocity and energy to stay around the 440-ish fpe mark at 50 yards, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The AmmoInc stuff looks the most promising of that bunch since it's starting at 509 fpe. If it does a decent job of retaining velocity, it should still be above that 444 fpe threshold at 50 meters. I suppose that we don't necessarily have to hold 444 fpe at 50 meters as an inviolable absolute, but any ammo claiming to be "10mm" ammo ought to be at least crowding that metric. Otherwise, it's just overpriced .40 S&W in a long case.

And yet another great video mr. Tool. This is my take on it. Why somebody would shoot the lesser powerful 10 mm you have to realize in the last 3 years you had? How many millions of new shooters have never even owned a gun before? I have a brother that bought five guns within a year and he hasn't touched a gun in 45 years. He's 59 years old. So maybe they're just buying whatever's cheapest so they can just practice with it and then they'll figure it out eventually. I've always been on the mindset. The same thing you say practice with what you're going to carry same velocities whether it's full male jackets or the hollow points. Same grain bullet. Same velocities within 50 ft of each other. And everything I have the PPU 180 grain 10 mm and it doesn't fit in my Rock Island armory magazine. I can get two shells in there. Then the bolts start hitting same thing with the two Wilson combat 10 mm magazines that I bought. They do not fit in that single stock magazine on my Rock Island or those closing combats. And I bought 10 boxes of them because I was out of Dunham's 2 years ago and they had them on sale for 27 bucks a box. So I bought them so whether I get another 10 mm or not all depends on which one I decide I'm going with. I'd like to have that double stack Rock Island with the four and a half inch barrel. I believe it. They called the government model or the top 10 or something like that. But anyways, like I said another great video and have a great weekend!

S&B was founded by a couple of Frenchies named Louis Sellier and Jean Belloit. They were royal loyalists who had fled France during the revolution and ended up in Germany. That the company left Germany and ended up in Czech country isn't too surprising, either. They are a high volume producer, which is something. But their quality is mediocre.

Light bullets may be fine for the 40 S&W, but I prefer heavier bullets in the 10mm. I never go below 180 grains, and these are a mix of factory JHPs and factory practice reloads that perform about as weakly at the ones you tested. I much prefer 200 grain and up, so I keep some Buffalo Bore on hand. The company rates both their 200 FMJ and 220 grain solid lead loads at 1200 fps, though I was unable to verify the make, model, or barrel length of the pistol they used in their testing. Out of my Glock 20 with its factory 4.61" barrel I've clocked their 200 grain FMJ at an average speed of 1172 fps. Their 220 grain lead was only slightly slower at 1152 fps. None of the rounds I tested achieved 1200 fps. When I replaced my 4.6" barrel with a 6" barrel, the 200 grain loads jumped to an average velocity of 1256 fps, with 1271 fps being the highest speed recorded. As a result, I purchased a Glock 40 because I use the 10mm as a full size field gun, not as a concealment pistol, and I want to wring all the performance out of it I can. Regarding the idea of training with heavy loads, I suppose if you can afford it, do it. But at $2.00+ per round, that's going to be some mighty expensive shooting. Reloading is only an option if you have a suitable cache of affordable primers. As for performance, like most other factory ammo, regardless of caliber, the 10mm cartridge is under-loaded. I presume the major ammo makers are worried about liability if they increase the amount of powder in the case. They also wish to maximize their profits. This conservative and stingy approach has allowed boutique manufacturers to own the high performance market and charge scalper prices. If only it were not so (sigh).

This was good info. It's not the easiest to get but Underwood has 180gr fmj range ammo but it's onlyisted at 1250. I don't use a lot of range ammo in 10 mm as I use underwood 220 HC, and 180 fmj range ammo is just weak sauce and not comparable practice. With all the new 10mm handgun options you would think there would be a push to have really 10mm ammo. Great video.

Great video! Excellent content you present to us. Those are definitely underpowered loads for 10mm, (called FBI loads). I carry a 10mm in the Northwoods with me, I use 10mm mag brass from starline, it's got a thicker web and slightly thicker walls. I trim to length, deburr and chamfer, then load. For my woods carry ammo, I load 220 grain flat nosed copper plated bullets that chrono at 1230+ FPS. Now you see why I use beefed up brass. In the city I carry a 40, 45, or 9mm. I try to hand load my target ammo as close to the same velocity with the same bullet weights as my carry ammo for obvious reasons. I never knew there was such a thing as small primered 10mm brass, even an old goat like me learns new things once in a while! Again, great vid, thanks for sharing.

The only 2 decent 10mm FMJ range ammo I have found is Underwood and Sig Sauer. Identical ballistics (180 gr at 1250 fps) and really close in price when you figure in shipping for the Underwood and markup for the Sig. However, at around 80 cents a pop, you’re paying 50 to 100 percent more than the stuff you tested here.

NEW CONTRAPTION IDEA - to expand on your new series evaluating weak sauce practice ammo - point of aim differences between practice and carry ammos. You got the speed and penetration/expansion covered already, now invent a machine that holds pistols steady, because 1,000 rods of practice that's 4 inches off your carry point of aim is useless.

I would definitely need some type of vise to keep everything consistent. That's the main reason I don't even bother doing handgun ammo "accuracy testing." Way too much human error variable involved.
