Federal is good ammo, but the Sierra game king boat tail soft points they loaded back about 30 years ago where garbage. Sometimes they would work great, other times they would blow up on the rib of 90 pound doe and not exit. This was the 165's in .308. Those bullets weren't made by federal though, just loaded by them. The noslers I got loaded by federal were excellent, so the loading job was fine. The Sierra game kings were just crap bullets.

@jeffingram9499Ай бұрын
I’m not sure if they are the same as say a gold dot bullet. The technology may be a bit different with the fusion. I used to cut and etch welded steel to confirm adequate penetration. Out of curiosity I cut one of fusion bullets to see what was actually going on. There is actually 3 layers off copper jacket material fused together somehow this alone makes it a very strong If the core is chemically bonded to the jacket structure I would say it’s as good as any. If a white tail walks out really close they don’t seem to come unglued as bad as the older design cup n core. I hope that helped they work for me.

My wife and I used the Powershock for many years on dozens of deer and many times got penetration even deeper than that shown in this test on shots between 40-80 yards where most of our shots occur. The expansion shown here makes it look like they would make a very big hole in flesh and bone but that has not been the case in my experience. They make a hole about the size of a nickel going in and, on a broadside, shot with no bone hit, a 1'' - 1 1/2''hole coming out. When they hit bone they do far better and make a larger hole. It's a good deer load for sure. However, they don't beat the old standby being the Nosler Partition. The other load I like but have trouble finding many times is the Winchester Silvertip with the black coating on the bullets. This 150 gr load rips HUGE holes in deer but also penetrates an average deer even on a quartering shot at 50 yards. Exit holes are the size of a Cue ball with this load. It anchors deer really well.

308 just gets the job done. Cheap to run factory ammo, cheap to reload, just about every rifle you could want is chambered in it. It’s not a laser, it can’t take advantage of insanely high bc bullets, and it is just plain vanilla. But many guys buy the latest and greatest for a fantasy hunt they can’t afford or because they want to shoot to 600 when they hunt woods you can’t see a deer past 150 or they want a 1000 yard rifle when their lifetime round count is under 250 shots. Let the suckers let the marketeers drain their wallets while those in the know keep getting the job done without needing a new rifle every other year to keep up with the trends.

Great performing ammo that really punches above its price point. The Speer Hot Cor bullets have great weight retention on game and expansion as you've seen in your test. They do a great job of transferring all the energy on target and dropping game really fast. I believe the way they make these with the pouring of hot lead into jackets instead of swaged into jackets as other cup and core bullets does make a difference in how they retain weight more similar to a bonded bullet..just my opinion. I am trying Fusions for the first time however this season. Only for one reason however. I have a couple new stands with the possibility of longer range shots and they have a higher BC than the Powershok bullets and retain 2-300 more ft lbs of energy past 300yds..in case a good shot presents itself in that 3-400yd range available to me..Weather conditions dictate on taking long shots for me regardless unless its on paper at those ranges and knowing your drops and a lot of practice ahead of time,,which we do. My good old 7 Rem Mag is still in the gun safe however if I want to use it sighted in with the much more expensive Terminal Ascents in case I drew an elk tag this year in my State. But I've found it comes down to knowing your gun and caliber and shot placement in a proven deer cartridge means more than being a Magnum for deer hunting..I like both, just .308 is much cheaper to practice with so for me its my favorite too. Thanks for the upload.

Just got a doe & buck this season with Hornady Superpreformance 168gr ELD Match. I used my AR10 as well. Wondering if you could do a test with the Hornady 168gr. They made 2 different versions at the same grain one they call Black & the other is Superpreformace! I have both but don’t know if there’s any difference.

They are the same round, I called federal a couple years ago and customer service admitted it to me, a marketing spin to sell an existing but proven product. Info online and on boxes was identical between the two.

the last time I shot gel with a 308 soft tip it pretty much disintegrated into bits of copper and lead dust. I don't shoot my gel anymore with rounds that disintegrate, burn or explode because it ruins the gel too fast.

Just finished cleaning this batch earlier. I usually just cut out the bad sections from stuff like this and toss it.

I’m interested in seeing Tulammo in .308 caliber tested against other manufacturers.
