What most trailer manufacturers do not tell you is that the 83" width on the spec sheet is not overall but inside the fenders. That is very important when you're trying to figure out if the equipment you are hauling will fit inside the railing of the trailer!! This is a very informative video and it might save you a lot of grief from getting the wrong trailer! I know it helped me! Thanks!

I look for welds across the flange of the beams in flexing areas. Many small trailer manufacturers make the mistake of welding in the wrong places. When you work these small trailers every day, all day long, they'll have cracking problems. For recreational periodic uses, they're typically fine.
@thegreenerthemeaner3 жыл бұрын
I have a 2014 20 foot with 7k axles, brakes on all 4 wheels, manual hydraulic tilt. A powered one is fine but actually slow. I can bring a loader or mini excavator up to it, push it down, drive on to the point in tilts back to lock position. Power down is just wrong. The 4" cross members on mine are on 14" centers so the floor will handle about anything you can safely put on it. Yes it weighs a little more but not that much. I put 14 ply tires on it after the originals starting getting scary looking. Stand up ramps are noisy, cut your mileage always, hard to move with age. Stowable ramps are a back ache and prone to noise making. For a bit more money, get a tilt, at least 5k axles, and always brakes all around. See if Powder coating is available over any paint process. Way more durable.
@tsafa3 жыл бұрын
Two things forgot to mention... 1- the extra 2 feet of trailer means 500lb less cargo because the trailer weight is increased by that weight and the gross stays the same. 2- the low dovetail scrapes the ground on a quick incline like into a driveway or even some roads. Nonetheless, I went with the extra two feet and the dovetail 😁
@MrSharkBait561 Жыл бұрын
I ordered the 20ft with the 2ft dovetail. Started regretting not going for the extra 2ft but if it's adding more weight and scrapes the ground, then I think I'm good. I will be hauling low cars so I'm not sure tbh.
@jktrenching9181 Жыл бұрын
@@MrSharkBait561 Just looked up the specs. Capacity difference between a 16' to a 22' is only 330 lbs (55/ft). The longer dovetail isn't lower. It's just more gradual. Yes, it's a little further back from the axles making it rub a little easier but it's very minimal. I'd without hesitation get the 22' instead of the 20' for an extra $75.

I will go out of my way to avoid PJ trailers. I have been somewhat disappointed in the quality of mine. I have a few friends that will never buy them again either. The axles are fine. Everything else is the problem. The biggest deal breaker is the powdercoating job and low quality steel It was awful. It rusted out so fast it wasn't funny. I have had about 25 trailers in my life including building a few and custom ordering one. I have bought cheaper enamel painted ones that got less care and lasted longer. A real shame. Because I live in the rust belt. The dealership for PJ is near by and has an awesome service and a good supply of parts for all makes so that is nice.
@KISSMYACE32033 жыл бұрын
@@ifyoutip I agree, I have yet to see a quality made trailer. My buddy has a PJ 40ft triaxle gooseneck. I was underneath, and just going around with a fine tooth comb, so many cut corners. Wiring is always garbage, hand cut cutouts with slag still on them, stuff that is (should be) CNC cut and bent still hammered into place. I've been a welder for a decade now, so I do speak from experience, not just throwing a company under the bus. I want quality through and through.

Some things Ive learned over many years, you will never buy a shed that"s too big, and never buy a trailer that is too long. A tractor with bucket in front and bush hog on the back will fill it up. an old Cadillac with the eng/trans in front, will fill the 222ft trailer. If it's used, there will be times when you will wish you would have gotten the 25ft trailer.

I recently bought a brand new 20 ft dovetail trailer it really looks good but after using it a while it's not what I expected for the money the break have never worked right they slow the truck down but even in Grass you can't adjust them to where they'll lock the tires at I think the brake drums are so out of round they just occasionally will catch one of the fenders has already broke loose from where it was welded together I think that happened when the guy delivering it pulled in the driveway I heard a loud popping noise and it seemed like it was coming from the fender the hitch on front of trailer is not adjustable it's too big for the 2-inch ball not big enough for 2 and 5/16 so it just flops up and down on empty trailer. I bought it in Alabama so that's too far for me to carry it back I just want to hope it holds together the only good thing I can say about it is the trailer is set up so you can use your tailgate down

How much is the trailer with the side walls, the side ramp entry, the generator tool box on the front? How long is it? I’m looking for something to haul a car, a mobility scooter, a generator, a flat ocean kayak and a supboard. Easy ramps with no fuss no frustration, no perfect aim 😉

What always strikes mewith the American trailers is just how far back the axles are mounted - while this would make sense with a 'fifth wheel' setup, it puts a LOT of tongue load on the tow bar. In Some countries, like down here, there are relatively low tongue weights than can be used, largely because of the affect it has on the dynamic loading of the tow vehicle and the tow vehicle specified loadings.

@gordowg1wg1454 жыл бұрын
@@hamscanner I'm not sure which side of the Atlantic(?) you're on, but on the American side they 'seem' to have a lot of problems with wheel bearings - but that may be due to the higher loadings, much higher speeds, and greater distances they subject them to? And, of course, they may be statistically very rare and it's just because of the trailer-miles that make them seem more common.
@limpy882 жыл бұрын
When some many American truck have 1000 to 3000lbs tonge weight. 1/2 truck to 1 ton truck.(1 ton dual rear wheel truck are towing 36k lbs trailers now) Tongue weight is not as big of a problem with our larger trucks.
@Owen4it2 жыл бұрын
If you look at the purpose of these trailers, they are equipment haulers... the heavy equipment is centered or just forward of the axles for the best load and tongue weight distribution. A good demonstration of this is a box trailer construction. Barn doors indicate a more centered load and a forward axle and a ramp door is a more rearward axle.
