I realize at times, I make buying makeup sound like an unhealthy addiction. While I do feel I can be smarter about my purchasing decisions, I don’t mean to minimize those that have actual addictions that affect their lives and their family and friends.

I thinkthe concept of going on a makeup no buy is so interesting. I am 50 years old, a d i basically ridnt have any makeup when i turned 50 this year. I had kind of a mid life crisis and started watching you tube videos to learn about products and application. Suddenly i had an uncontrollable urge to buy everything that i was seeing in the videos. I have the means to buy whatever wanted and after just a few months, i realized that i had far more than i could possibly use, much less enjoy. So my best advice if you are trying to curb spending on makeup is to stop watching makeup videos.

Haha that is fantastic advice, Corrie! But there are some KZbinrs that I really enjoy watching. While I have unsubscribed from some people that I felt like were only trying to sell something to me, I don't think I would want to give it up 100%.

I completely agree! last year I was subscribed to a lot of beauty youtubers, and with them constantly doing hauls and reviewing new products, I felt like I needed EVERYTHING. so at the end of the year I cleaned out my subscriptions and only kept a handful. this year has been a it easier to keep myself in check, especially since I also decided to go cruelty free with my makeup. still, I have way more than I use, so doing a nobuy next year sounds intriguing (maybe because it's giving me an excuse to stock up now lol)

GlitzyGlam Glow no, I was going to comment the same thing. I watch so many videos that it’s almost like I experience it myself. I see the texture, the shades, how it works, etc. I know everything I need to about to product and the appeal is gone.

I live in a country where we don't have Sephora at all. I am now abroad, I entered Sephora like crazy and knowing I will spend hundreds. I took a few stuff then I looked at them a few minutes later..... I decided I really didn't NEED any of them, nor did they excite me! I left the store feeling soooo proud of myself😊😋

I implemented a "2 out, 1 in" policy on most of my products for makeup, with a couple categories being "1 in, 1 out" and it's accidentally turned into a no buy since it takes forever to get through a product 😂. I figured this way I'm shrinking my collection, do not have to mentally commit to not buying makeup for a set time, and motivates me to use up a product so I can try something else. Congrats on making it a year!

This was such a great video for me to stumble upon. I love makeup, but I was getting a bit out of control with buying it. I put myself on a buying ban for all of 2018 unless it's something I use all the time that runs out. None of my family members think I can do it, but this video proves that it's possible! Take it one day at a time and to help, set a monthly goal where maybe you put the money you would have spent towards something that will benefit and uplift you. If you love to travel or think you don't have the money to travel, maybe you might want to plan a trip and pay for it with each of your savings from not buying makeup. I wish you all the best.

Definitely helps to remove the temptation so I'd say unsubscribe from emails and if you're willing any youtubers that promote that "next new thing!" The less the world is screaming at you that you need something the less you'll feel pressured to buy it. Maybe get into something else like cooking or minimalism. Good luck.

I just discovered your channel and I really like the way you seem to be very calm, soft spoken and eloquent, it's truly refreshing. I was thinking to go on a "no buy" for a year as well and doubting if I could really do it, but now you have convinced me. I will try to do it for 5-6 months and see how I do. I'm also cruelty free with my makeup and it truly helps, especially when going to the drugstore, I barely even think about those brands anymore since they are no longer on my mind.

Thank you! I think a 5-6 trial is a great way to test if it's right for you. And going cruelty-free has definitely helped curb drugstore spending, it feels like 90% of the drugstore isn't cruelty-free.

LOL, Well it most certainly does count, but I don't think it is the end of the world if you crack and buy your favourite concealer or setting spray when you run out. It's makeup not life or death! Anyway, the title of your video defiently drew me in, and I have to say I am super impressed you went a whole year without buying any makeup! (Minus the setting spay, which nobody can fault you. I bought 2 of those duos myself during the Rouge sale. Too good a deal to pass up!) A whole year?!! Wow, you should be sooooo proud of yourself. I'm going to go watch the other video's you made on this subject and maybe I will learn some tips that can help me be more successful in my makeup spending in the new year. I hate to say it, but I can totally relate to how you felt last year before you started your No Buy. Buying the products just because I felt I didn't to buy them, and not because I am necessarily super excited about them. Example: I just bought the Sephora Give Me Some New Lips bundle. I need more lip products like I need a hole in my head, and truthfully I wasn't even overly into the 5 items in the kit. Yet I bought it, because I felt it was a good deal and it was something (or 5) new. Now it's just sitting in my makeup room; collecting dust. Mam, I got some issues! 😫

Great to hear your thoughts. I did a no buy for 2016 for 4 months and it was a fail for me because I overcompensated in the following 6 months. I think for me a low-buy would be more realistic as I don't have as good impulse control as you!!

I think that is a danger for sure. I would do a no buy to train myself off the addiction., save money, and be away from the pressures of being taken in by advertising etc. If I keep a list of all the things I was missing buying in that no buy time, and then straight away after finishing jump for joy and go out to buy them all, I have learnt nothing at all, and am back to giving all my money to companies etc .

I'm working on a makeup no buy this year, only replacing essentials since my collection isn't large enough to go a whole year without replacing. I seriously love watching your videos related to spending. They're always so reassuring. I used to be such a shopper and I've really cut down and you have definitely helped me!

Great job. And I definitely don't think you broke your no-buy because you had to buy replacement products, which I think is always an exception. I'm currently on a low-buy, mainly because I don't see anything that actually draw my attention or bring value to my collection.

Congrats, you did amazing!! I tried a 3-month no-buy but failed, I tried again, a December no-buy and I did it, so maybe I'll try 1 month no-buy 1 month low-buy. I just wanted to say to everyone if you don't succeed in your first attempt don't give up!! There are many ways to reduce spending, just find the one that'll work for you 💜

I will say going cruelty-free and mostly sticking to the drugstore has really help me curb my spending. Since I live in a more remote area, I actually don’t have a lot of options. And I know I can go online to spend but the places I like to shop (Sephora and Ulta) doesn’t ship for free unless over $50. So I save that when I want really want something. It’s just parameters that work for me.

Agreed! Having some limitations or hurdles ($50 free shipping) makes it easier to think again about if you want to purchase something or not.

When I was younger I had that weird thing of buying back ups of make up or perfume I really loved. Now I know that using up make up takes a loooooong time, especially when you don't wear it every day AND use a light hand, and by the time I actually use it up I might find sth that I like more. Also, having a huge collection of anything, even make up, makes sense when you live somewhere long term. I move roughly once a year and fly to my home country every two months so what I need to find is a capsule makeup collection. Items that work great always and travel well. Would you consider making a video on similar topic if you feel that you have items like that? Much love and a big thank you for the videos! ❤️

Great job on your successful no buy! I finished a 1 year no buy in December, had a little binge (6 eyeshadow palettes, 2 mascaras, and mac fix+ trio), and am now on another 1 year no buy. I didn't run out of any category of product during the first year and i found it really fun to not buy anything. I also just rediscovered some foundations that were sitting in my collection that are working very well on my winter skin.

This video just showed up in my 'recommended for me' feed and I'm glad KZbin got it right for once! I haven't really been buying much makeup for over a year. Well, I replace mascaras and stuff like cleansers, moisturizers and SPF when I run out, but I actually need and use that stuff. I love the transformative options of makeup but I can't stand the insane hoarding of it on youtube. My goal is to go back to being a normal person and only having the stuff I need. I have had a real issue buying WAY too much makeup over the past two years. It really started after I started watching gurus. I felt I had to have everything they had, makeup, brushes, blenders, nail polishes, the list goes on and on. I feel so guilty about how much money I wasted on items I just DON'T use. I am thankful that I found Lucia Tepper and you, I now feel like I don't NEED crazy items to make me happy. I am going on a no buy journey myself,starting today. One thing I did this morning to help was to unsubscribe from many channels on here, Instagram, and Facebook so I don't see all the promoting of makeup. Thank you for helping me to realize I CAN do this. My goal is a no buy until June 8th this year, then see how it goes after that.

I did the same thing! And I love Lucia's channel, she gives a great 'anti-consumerism' message. I found that unsubscribing to bigger channels and unfollowing instagram accounts like Trend Mood really helped me avoid new releases I didn't need, too. Good luck on your no-buy!

I've been on a no-buy for 2017. but I did cheat a bit. I bought only one palette and I had to buy few basic stuff I ran out of (brow stuff, mascara,powder) but I kept it drugstore and mostly CF. There are so much more better things money can buy... No matter how much we all love make up, I think it became a bit crazy in 2017. with all the releases and prices going up.

I'm doing a low/no-buy in 2018 but only for certain categories, so I'm not allowed to buy any eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, and all the other categories that I have enough of to last me for more than the year. With other categories (like lip gloss or face powder that I only have one per function of), I'll do one in, one out, which will all be a challenge but I'm excited to see what I can get used up in the coming year and what products I can re-discover.

Loved this video I will be subscribing. This past year, while I didn’t do a no buy or even a low buy, I did focus on using all of the makeup already in my collection. I did product a week series with my Palettes, Mascara, Foundation, concealer, and Highlighters. I did a purge while I was doing this as well It did help me get in touch with what I really enjoyed, it helped my makeup skills, it definitely curved my buying and I find myself not getting as worked up and excited about every new release. It helped me grow up a little and get me out of my makeup obsession and buying addiction. Congratulations on 2017 and everything it helped you learn about yourself.

Great advice! Looking back oon my spending habits on majeup for 2017 my resolution for 2018 is to limit my purchases to 2 beauty items per month. I just didn't think I could do a no buy so this low buy I hope will really help me shop my stash more and make me more patient and thoughtful on what items I want to buy for the month and then hopefully getting other Items on sale once they've been out long enough. I transitioned to cruelty free over 2015-2016 and now don’t have anything that isn’t. You’re so right, it helps with spending, you can immediately disregard a lot of products because they aren’t cruelty free :) I was afraid I wouldn’t find enough things that I truly enjoyed but it’s been the opposite! There are many I won’t ever buy because I don’t have the space or time to try ever CF beauty product that has piqued my interest :)

In 2017 I have too many makeup products and then when it comes to 2018 I realized that I got far too many products and most of them are barely used . Then what I did was I re-sell the 1-5 times used palettes and any makeup products in half price ( even high-end brand ) then some nearly expired I made a giveaway . I was so so upset that I spent too much money on makeup which I don’t need that much . I’m just a 17 years old girl at that time . Now I’m 20 have minimal makeup collection and I’m proud of it tho . It makes me réalisée how to spend money and start watching minimalist KZbinr and now I’m here ! Your opinion is all we need and want to hear. Great video ❤️

I haven’t consciously decided on a no buy but had a gift card to Ulta and went all through Mesquite’s new store and walked out empty handed. I would have to replace mascara because I have sensitive dry eyes and have heard that should be replaced every 3-4 months. But I am truly blessed to have enough color cosmetics to last more than a year. I would also have to replace primers when empty - I love my eye and face primers!

I didn’t do a no buy in 2017 but I did cut back a lot! It was difficult in the beginning but got much easier as time went by. I have so much makeup it would be almost impossible to run out. I started to realize it’s wasteful as most of the products won’t get used. Now I try to purchase only what I really need or run out of. You would be amazed to see how long it actually takes to go through a product.

I’ve watched this video so many times, and will be watching it again and again. At the start of February I decided to go on a no-buy. I don’t have a large collection in the first place but there really are so many things lacking in my collection (esp setting sprays) that I think I need. I’m not talking about glitters, crazy colourful eyeshadows and ridiculous fake lashes, I’m talking about a nice tinted moisturiser or a light foundation, a hydrating primer and a decent setting powder that doesn’t flat me out. I realised that going on a low buy would be more realistic for me as I know I will eventually cave in to the sales. I had a discount at Space NK that was about to run out so I bought the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette that has been in my wishlist for years now (and I use it all the time!), and one day I popped in to Boots (drugstore here in the UK) and saw the Maybelline Dream Cushion that I have been wanting for months, on sale for £5 and they were in my shade so I bought two - the reason being is that I go through them so quickly and they are about £13 rrp 😭. I’m a bit bummed out that I failed my no buy but I feel like what I get from your videos is that whenever I do decide to buy, I have to make sure it’s something that I like and been eyeing for a long time, even when the honeymoon period is over. I really learned a lot from you Tash and you are such a gem in this beauty community thank you for what you do! Keep it up.

This was sooo me in 2017🙏🏼though I still have a passion for makeup and is still keeping up with what's new and the latest trends, etc....I have not had that impulse to randomly buy makeup like I used to anymore. What has actually helped me was 2017 had a crazy TON of new makeup releases, with brands, makeup influencers, etc.. which became insanely overwhelming to me and so I gave up on buy makeup 'cause they were sort of all the same stuff 🙌🏻 in a way I'm thankful that 2017 has helped me to cut back on my spending and to just buy what I realllllyy want and/or need to restock.
