I did this this year too! I ended up using up all my eyeshadows (Naked 1 and Smashbox full exposure) except the grey's/blacks that I can't do at work and then I got to buy the Modern Renaissance and Buxom Dolly's Wild Side this month and it felt awesome.

I'm going on a low buy in 2018 for six months. Trial run, so to speak. I'm going to do project pans. Also, whatever I see that I want to buy I'm going to take that money and put it in a savings account to see how much money I've saved. I've also thought about a contingency plan ... if I do buy a non essential product I'm going to mark it with a piece of tape with the dollar amount on it so I can visually see how much I spent. You have been a great inspiration for me, thank you! Wish me luck!

One tip that really helped me out a lot from holding myself back from purchasing makeup I really don't need is unsubscribing from a bunch of people from the makeup community. That way I'm not constantly seeing new releases and having the urge to spend on more makeup. I also always shop my stash first 😊
@TooMuchTash6 жыл бұрын
That's a good point, Leesa! I find that I've unsubscribed from a lot of bigger KZbinrs in the past year and that has probably helped me, too, by removing people who talk about so many new products. Thank you!

My tip: My brother and I made a deal that if we bought something that we werent suppose to buy (mine was makeup and clothes, his was gadgets and his online buys), we had to pay double the amount of what we bought to each other. For example if I bought a $40 palette I would have to give him $80. Because I gave in and didnt stick to my no buy rule. I hope it made sense haha. But it has been working so far. And i plan to continue this until i use up my collection 😊
@TooMuchTash7 жыл бұрын
Pauline Paez That's a great idea! It's nice that you have someone to hold you accountable like that. So you'd have to technically spend $120 for that $40 palette, which gives you perspective on if it's actually worth it, genius.

Wow- this is SO impressive! I subscribed right away. I did a four month no buy last fall until January First and it wasn't just with makeup, but with everything. I gave myself two exceptions before I started it and aside from those, I never broke it! Granted I was living at home in highschool so I never needed to buy soap or anything for myself but it was still so mind opening to watch myself save all of the money I made for months without buying a thing (of course, I bought gifts for family members for Christmas but that doesn't count in my book). This is so amazing that you are doing this! Okay now time to check out all your videos lol

Really looking forward to your one year update if you haven't put it up already. It's crazy to see what the makeup culture has become....when I think about actually using up everything I have I know it would take me YEARS because it actually takes a long time to use things up. We get so caught up in the hype that we completely lose perspective....it's really eye opening to see how many people have put videos mentioning they get massive urges to buy new things when there is no real need and we already have a surplus. It definitely seems like a genuine addiction for a LOT of ordinary people, and one that we slip into without realising. I have a real problem holding off buying something....when I need it, I need it NOW and I can't seem to control myself!

I have 2-5 items in every makeup category, except lipsticks I have 17 and palettes 11. Not a lot someone would say. But definitely way to much for me to use up. I started buying too much makeup as I started watching yt. I would buy everything I like, things that I would never normally pick up but bought just because of yt. Then I found project panners here and videos about saving and using your makeup and no buys. Now I'm sorry that I didn't use that money to travel, or save for better things, or just buy more stuff for my family instead buying everything for myself. I'm also sorry that I bought some things that are not cruelty free but they were so hyped on yt that I was sure I needed them when I didn't, nor actually wanted. Yt makes you feel like you need everything and that you will regret missing out on it. I was never a hoarder and I feel anxious when I have too much stuff. I feel overwhelmed cuz I just don't know what to choose cuz I want to use everything. Now I do project pans and buy only if I run out of something or if there is a good deal and I know I'm soon gonna run out of that item I already own and have no backups. Your video is really giving me hope to continue and to learn on my mistakes.
@TooMuchTash7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It looks like you've learned a lot already! I hope my channel will be about helping people make the best purchasing decision for them, and not just to blindly buy something because I like it. Having 2-5 of each item is impressive!

I’m interested in watching your summary at the end of the year. I’ve become tired of and less and less impressed by the relentless focus on new releases. At this point, I have the eyeshadows I like and want to use, and much much more. So, I don’t buy much unless I run out of staples. One thing that has been important for me is to stop watching haul videos. There is absolutely no point in just watching someone going over yet another pile of makeup products I don’t need. I enjoy anti-hauls and makeup application videos very much. Your voice and experience are important to counteract the mad consumerism of the beauty community on social media!!

I used to buy drugstore makeup like it was going out of style when I was younger. If I had a coupon for it I would buy it. A few years later I found myself looking at the things I lusted after and they didn't give me joy. I realized that makeup expires and things aren't safe like I would think they were anymore. I received an acrylic organizer from my mom on my birthday. I would say it's average for someone that just does makeup for mywelf and the occasional friend. I started an inventory. I started to write down I'm empties. I soon realized what I actually use. Now I have a one in one out policy in my makeup stash. Or if I really think I want it. The item must fit in the organizer not spilled over into another portion of my vanity. This has been working for me. I hope this helps someone else.
@TooMuchTash7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for telling us what you do. I'd like to incorporate a 'one in, one out' policy with my collection for products that expire more quickly, like foundation and mascara. I track my empties as well!

Ulta (or at least my store) doesn't give out samples anymore. You may want to check if that's a company thing, or store thing. You're doing a GREAT job! I think next year I'm going on a low buy--only buying items if I run out. I'm currently on the hunt for drugstore cruelty-free items, so I've purchased way more than I need of late. It's hard to find items that I like for some reason. It really will take me a long time to use it all up, so I'm guessing next year could easily be a low buy (possibly a no buy at the rate I'm going, ha!) Thanks for the tips!
@TooMuchTash7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think my local Ulta gives samples for certain brands, like Lancome and Clinique. But they've been stepping up their game lately so hopefully they make samples an official thing! Best of luck on your low-buy. Trust me, I've failed quite a few times. It doesn't have to be perfect! And I have a series I'm starting where I compare affordable, cruelty-free products from a certain category, so stay tuned!

This was great! I am on a no-buy for September not only for makeup, but for skincare as well. For me a lot of it is just plain clutter. I also canceled my Birchbox to help stem the flow of samples into my home...most of which don't end up getting used or wouldn't have been something I picked on my own. Can't wait to see your year-end results.

Congratulations on not buying makeup for one year. My goal for this year is also to use up all the makeup I have and stop buying so many products before it gets out of hand. Sometimes KZbinrs push products on viewers which influences people to buy more. There are better things to spend money on than makeup.

The FIRST, and I mean very first thing to do to actually have a chance of succeeding at a no-buy is: unsubscribe from all emails, notifications etc., from any & every site where you might possibly buy makeup. Remove that pressure! Holy cow, the companies are at us literally every hour, so if you don't want to feel the frenzy, stop following them on twitter, instagram, FB, snapchat... I'm not saying you have to remove membership, but change your settings until you're done with your challenge. You'll be amazed at how much easier it is not to crave things if they aren't being continually hyped to you. Read more books instead of visiting the sites, or spend more time experimenting with your stash, playing with the cat, whatever.
@janelles54447 жыл бұрын
Such a great tip! In my opinion, ignorance is bliss when it comes to makeup. If I don't know it's coming out or don't know there's a sale, I'm not tempted to buy it. I might have to try that!

Great video. I am starting a NO Buy for the firat 6 months of 2018.. I don't know if I can commit to a year 🤔. But I think another way to be successful is to have your makeup organized really well. This way you can see all you have available to use. I am working on this organization project now. This way I won't have the urge to buy duplicates.

Thanks and good luck on your no-buy! Yes, having it stored in such a way that you can see everything at once if a great way to not over-do it. It's way easier to forget about a product if it's shoved in the back on a drawer.

I love buying makeup but I hate having too much of it, it stresses me like crazy to the point of stopping using it until I gave some of my products to some family and friends. It was just too much and I wouldn't be able to use the products that I really liked because I would feel guilty of not using some that I hated but were expensive. I dont buy makeup for a few months now ( mascara doesn't count because it expiers fast).

Suuuper impressed with you! This inspired me for my (eventual) no-buy goals. I've been thinking of doing a no-buy for the crazy holiday season and this was amazing inspiration!! I agree that giving time helps. If I leave something in my cart and think about it for a month, 90% of the time I remove it after I've thought about it for a while! I also like the idea of waiting to buy something after finishing an entire product. I have this problem with bronzer, I just starting wearing it a few months ago so now I want *all the bronzers*. But I try to stay contented with my one deluxe sample which will last forever anyway! Meanwhile swatching away at Sephora and Ulta whenever I have the chance...

I recognize myself in your story, I too bought waaay too much makeup for myself during the christmas sale. I'm still waiting for the final package to arrive and I'm not even looking forward to it. I'm ashamed even. But I can't return makeup in my country so instead I'm going to use it up and not buy anything more. I plan on having a no buy the whole year, but I'm doing it one month at a time so it doesn't feel too overwhelming. I will buy makeup if I run out. For example, I only have one mascara and when it runs out I'll buy a new one. So it's technically a low-buy, but I only buy something when I run out of a product in that specific category. :)

Staying away from cosmetics stores too! A pastime of mine if I have a couple of minutes to spare before meeting a friend or during a clothes/food shopping trip is to pop into the drugstore and browse. All that does is make me want to come back another time and get what I've seen - that's if I didn't buy it there and then on the spot. It's a shame because beauty videos on KZbin are my faves but they only make me want more!

hey girl thanks for sharing so much! I've always been hesitant to share my makeup spending habits because of fear of judgement so I finally did it this year after like 3 years on and off youtube haah! I'm the youngest too and can definitely relate to getting expensive gifts for christmas, a fair number of my expensive items (YSL/Charlotte Tilbury) are christmas gifts and I definitely do use makeup to 'treat' myself. I had a phase where I would buy a ton at a go and feel so overwhelmed, I would end up using just one or two and the rest would sit around. My new rule is only buying 1-2 of a collection e.g. new range of lipsticks before I buy anymore and actually use up 1/2 before i think about buying some more. My experience is that after going through 1/2 of a product in daily use, favourites/raves can quickly become dislikes haha

I still watch a lot of KZbin videos but I focus more on watching empties, de-clutters and project pans. I agree about using up a product to see if you'd buy more like it. After some time it can become something you don't enjoy as much and the satisfaction of buying a second one is way lower.

Lauren Mae's video like this [or, more so on beauty addiction in general] is how I found her.. and, so many awesome channels since. I was / am a recovering drug addict so I never really put money into makeup like I would / could have. I do have an addictive personality but makeup was always just a whatever was available at the drugstore.. get the basics and that's it, kinda thing for me. My 'collection' is limited to a nice sized little canvas traveling MUA bag now, and there's definitely things I don't need but it's pretty tame compared to where it could be. It's so interesting to me to hear you [and people like Lauren or Elle S] be so open about this because I absolutely could see myself in this situation where I'm surrounded by makeup! The one thing I have gone overboard on since getting clean, is lipsticks.. but, I kinda realize that we all have our things and lipstick is far better than where my money use to be going. I have really enjoyed finding the panning side of YT, though, and while I tried to put myself on a no buy for lippies, I caved during the VIB sale when I was ordering KVD's perfumes [never thought I'd find a CF perfume I liked, so I did splurge on those for my holiday gift to myself] when I saw her studded lipsticks on sale. I only got one though, and in a more neutral shade [I was so close to getting a purple, LOL] so I try to look at the positives with it. I did break my own promise, but I remained reasonable and didn't go overboard.. her lipsticks have been on my list for awhile, so I am glad I grabbed one while it was on sale. The thing to remember is that, if you do end up buying something and relapsing [so to speak] that you should never beat yourself up over it. Accept it, set a new goal [now I still have my CP lippie stick I was already panning and want to use half of 'Lovecraft' before buying anything new] and focus on that. I do hope you do an update at the end of the year, it's really interesting what we learn about ourselves as we get older!

I love Lauren Mae's and Elle S's channels! They give a great message and it's flattering that you put us in the same category :) I hadn't taken into account that someone who buys too much makeup might have an addictive personality in general. I will have to seriously consider if this is something I do in other aspects of my life, too, and whether it might be a bigger issue than just makeup. I tend to buy too many blushes, most of which all look pretty much the same on my face. I hope to be more realistic with buying makeup once my no-buy has ended. I mention in the description box of this video that I in no way mean to minimize those who suffer from real addictions that affect every aspect of their life and I hope people watching do not think I am glamorizing the idea. Thank you for being honest and telling some of your story. Congratulations on being in the process of recovery, I cannot imagine the will power and self-discipline that goes into making such an incredible change and I pray that you have the encouragement and support that you deserve.

Too Much Tash that's one thing I try not to do, name other channels like that.. there's always other ones that just weren't in my head, then I feel bad, LOL but yes - you've become a fast favourite, along with Kailey Baute that I'd found from her collab with Liv, and Elle that I also found through the '12 pans of Christmas' and even Jacqueline I hadn't found before. There's not many channels anymore that I look forward to seeing videos from, but all the ones that I do are smaller, panning type channels these days. The whole, constantly pushing new products and stuff got old for me fast - it's makeup, I just want to see some creativity and relatablity [don't think that's a word, but I just made it one] from someone; if you'd do a review on something I'm interested in as well, that's great but, not the main thing I want from a channel. I like finding people who I genuinely like, whatever content they put out then I tend to enjoy. Addiction comes in all forms, and I do think that's super sweet of you to add that into the description.. some people take things too seriously. Addiction is addiction and I can absolutely guarantee there's young girls out there who are utterly addicted to makeup; maxing out credit cards just to get that new release! That is still an issue, maybe not as life threatening as something like drugs / alcohol can be, but an addiction nonetheless. If I don't keep myself in check, I can go overboard on a lot of things, LOL, I am so close to getting all of the NYX lip lingeries. When I first tried them, fell in love with the formula and wanted them all! As long as I do it slowly, I'm okay with that.. we all need to have a line and when you cross it, hold yourself accountable. Blushes and bronzers are some of my favourite makeup things, too, and it can make me chuckle if I go to swatching with just how similar some of them are! I don't know, I have seen some dark shit from people and lost people so, life just needs to be enjoyed. We all fudge up with promises to ourselves and that's okay, move on and learn from it; dwelling will only ever lead to depression and worse. It seems like you're doing that with this exact 'challenge'.. I think you'll forever look at makeup differently, while still enjoying it, which is always a good thing. 😘😘 ❤💕 Eehhh, and I ramble a lot.. could you imagine how ridiculous I could get after getting high?! Bahahha, rambling is just what I do.

Haha no I love it, you have no idea how much rambling I edit out of every video because I just go off on tangents haha. And your right, my attitude about buying makeup has changed so much!
@rosiellagrace7 жыл бұрын
Too Much Tash some people take things too personally - regardless of each of our situations, there's always areas that could handle some discipline or help. Stepping back and really evaluating it, is always a good thing! I do love a good ramble, hahha, there's a channel on here by a girl named Anwne [her channel name is just Anwen] and she is hilarious! She does a lot of ebay / aliexpress stuff but her tangents can make me laugh on any bad day. One minute she's talking about a brush that's good for a certain powder, then she's off talking about a squirrel because the brush is soft and there's a squirrel story she has, it's so funny and definitely relatable. I can ramble for hours.. I feel bad for some of my friends that put up with me five years ago, LOL! 😂😂

I bought so much the last 6 months. Nearly my whole collection because I decluttered nearly everything I had. I have far to much but because It's al kinda new I will not declutter again. I have now the rule, I have to empty 5 product of 1 categorie before I am aloud to buy 1 new. Except for products I don 't own 5 of, like primer and setting spray.
@TooMuchTash7 жыл бұрын
Wow that must be tough! I thought I might do a 1 in 1 out situation. 5 out 1 in is impressive! And I worry I'll buy too much since I decluttered so much, hopefully I can control myself haha

I desperately need to do a no buy, but how do you deal with not buying limited editions?? Any tips? I have anxiety just THINKING about not having been able to buy the Mac snowball collection. For example, even though I already own whisper of gilt, I absolutely had to have it in the LE packaging. I can't dupe that. And i keep thinking - What if they make an even more beautiful collection next year & I miss out because i'm on a no buy?
@TooMuchTash6 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's different for everyone. I haven't had any real temptation with limited edition, because I feel like nowadays everything can be duped. Packaging is a different story but if the packaging is important to you and makes you happy, buy it! As long as you're not justifying buying a ton of makeup just because it's limited edition, I don't think it will hurt. I hope that helps!
@rebecca44646 жыл бұрын
I have started thinking about limited edition stuff in a very different way that has helped me a lot. Whenever I see something LE, I think - what if I buy it and fall in love with it? By the time I go through the product, I will never be able to buy it again (AH!!). I will have anxiety about using it up because I will not be able to repurchase it. Then I'm going to spend tons more money trying to find an exact dupe for that item, knowing it will never be the same. It's not going to be fun. It is going to be anxiety-provoking. It is far better to fall in love with a perfect permanent item that you can look forward to repurchasing over and over for years than to go on a rollercoaster with LE items. Hope that helps!

I am 10 days into my 2019 no-buy, so I haven't learned much, but I will share a few things: A good sale can be dangerous! Stop and think. Is the money saved worth more than your goals for your no-buy? Probably not. At least, I don't think so. If a product that you see in a video really grabs you, shop your stash in a creative way to see if you can approximate it. Perhaps by mixing a couple of products together, you can create a dupe for it. Or try using a different kind of product that is in the right color. For example, a lipstick can work as a blush or eyeshadow can work as a highlighter. The Temptalia website is a great resource for looking up an item to read its description and to look for dupes. You might be surprised to find that you have a dupe for the item already, or at least something close to it! "Close enough" is "good enough"! Finally, try to find a friend or an online community that you can turn to if the temptation to buy something is too great. A nice KZbinr from the UK, Rachael Stephanie, is using her FB page to create a supportive community for those of us on a no-buy for 2019, including Rachael Stephanie herself. She has already helped me! Best Wishes to everyone on a no-buy or low-buy! ~Anastacia in Cleveland

Limiting to only drugstore products can also work, since its also harder to find great products that work for you.....

Also I havent really done this but getting samples probably works too?

Thank you! I've been trying to lately to replace used up makeup I loved with a cheaper version. And yes, i definitely swatch in store and get samples for most products! Thanks :)

what if someone gifts you makeup?
@TooMuchTash6 жыл бұрын
Haha that's a good question! I didn't get any makeup gifts this year, because I told most of the people in my life that I was trying to use what I have. But if I got a gift with purchase (like a mini mascara or something), I didn't count it.
