Welcome to the first episode of RETRO REWIND! In this new series, I take an in-depth look at something from my past that has inspired me along the way. This episode is all about TOONAMI, Cartoon Network's action block that helped popularize anime in the 90's. I'm honored to have voice actors Steve Blum and Christopher Sabat included in this video to discuss their experiences! Enjoy everyone!

This might sound really stupid but toonami actually saved my life..my friend came over my house and wanted me to go with him to some girl's house usually I would say yes but I was like hell no DBZ was about to come on..now this wasn't just any episode of dragonball z. This was the first time they aired the episode that showed Goku turn Super Saiyan. I waited a long long time for this episode and I was not about to miss it..well he left my house and as he was driving he made a u turn to quick and got hit by a semi..he survived but was in a coma for weeks but the passenger side where I would have sat was completely caved in..lucky me. Thanks toonami

Has women sleep with him to obtain jobs at his business, Praises to their face the lgbt community but when he thinks no one will see insults them as well as makes a mockery of real rape situations while at the same time pushing fake allegations on the above mentioned person. Used his position of power to attempt to and in some cases successfully removed Vic Mignogna from obtaining several business opportunities. @muslimmetalman
@muslimmetalman 9 жыл бұрын
Seriously,4Kids/Kids'WB! Are probably closer ingrained in my psyche than Toonami, as I didn't have cable and didn't see A TON of anime till late in the Toonami day. I recall Toonami as this badass, restricted section of Cartoon Network that aired ballsy adult shows like DRAGON BALL Z!!! This show that looked like Pokemon but had aliens and superheroes like Superman shooting Flamethrower and "Kame Ha Meh HA!!". There was also a show with guys in Islamic dress( I'm a son of Pakistani immigrants, grew up in Dearborn), one had orange girl hair and a sword. I'd never seen this stuff before, aside from the girly show that was like TMNT but with girls and the spaghetti hair, and weird Planet names. Again, I wouldn't understand this stuff directly and thoroughly till later, after 2003 when Viz released Shonen Jump and I saw Yugi-O on there- needless to say the comics shocked the hell out of me, so my early childhood is probably more Pokemon, Static Shock, and Xmen evo than DBZ and Tenchi.. I wouldn't say I had a traumatic, harrowing experience growing up, but more blandly depressing and lonely from what I remember.

I remember in the early 2000s going to my grandparents house and watching Cartoon Network because we didn't have cable at the time. I remember the first time when the cartoons stopped airing and this strange robot guy came on the screen. I remember thinking, "what is this?". I recall thinking that it was too intense for me at the time and turning it off once the Anime came on, but that weird ethereal feeling of Toonami itself has always stuck with me. It wasn't just an Anime block, it was an Anime block hosted by a badass, smooth-talking guy who directed shows from a spaceship. I think it's the fact that Toonami actually had some sort of story to go along with the shows that has made it stand out for so long.

Met Christopher Sabat & was one of the last to in his line. Showed him my superhero fusions like Darth Vegeta, goffuto, Piccolo/Zoro, & Broly/Juggernaut/Hulk. When I was showing him the fanpics on my phone, he pulled up the camera & took a free selfie with me. Not only do Blum & Sabat have the most badass voices in the industry, they're some of the coolest guys in person. Morphologis I remember the original Toonami with Voltron, Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, Thundercats, and the like. That was such a long time ago, and I'm about to be 29 soon, but I'll never forget those days. Voltron, Speed Racer, and Robotech on Cartoon Network were my first anime series years before I knew what it was, they were just shows to me as a kid.

Damn, elementary school... I was already in high school by the time y'all got DBZ.. Before that my nerd friends and I would get VHS copies of subtitled DB/Z/GT and movies. I was already finished with it all by the time Funimation first started dubbing DBZ. It's wild how young some of y'all were when toonami was a thing.

Definitely the same. I had a childhood friend from Turkey first introduce me to it, then it started gaining traction, and first caught a glimpse of a random episode of the Frieza saga. I vividly still remember watching Frieza get caught in half and I had my first ever stomach-turning queazy moment, where I actually hell off my chair because it caught me so off-guard.

Yu yu Hakusho is still my favorite anime of all time. One of the only anime i can just keep rewatching without ever getting bored. I live in Holland and we never had toonami. We never had DBZ. The only anime we really had were pokemon, Yu-gi-oh and Digimon. That's why it's only been 5 years since i got into anime. When i was 12 i saw my uncle watching yu yu hakusho so i watched that specific episode with him and my mind was blown. I was instantly hooked and watched the whole show in less than two weeks. While i watch most anime in sub there are still some shows i prefer in dub like Baccano, Yu yu hakusho, Fullmetal alchemist : brotherhood. All in All, anime is my favorite artform and the best place for me to escape for a while.

Giruga x Hakusho thats cool man and yes yu yu hakusho is a great anime I even own the video game of the dark tournament and I also have the whole series on blu-ray and that outstanding music,Ii mean I love dragonball, z, and gt but I also like yu yu hakusho and also i started watching Yugioh 2 weeks ago for the first time in my life and nobody hasn't recommended me to watch this but it was bcuz of that opening by the field of view and also bcuz I wanted to see something new in my life like i had time for a new anime like yugioh which looks pretty awesome and interesting but yeah i agree with u %100! P.S. Yu Yu hakusho is way better than inuyasha in my opinion inuyasha looks like an anime where they copy kurama's ultimate form (forgot the name of it) and i just hate that I live in Cali (where i live now) and when I talk about yu yu hakusho everybody looks at me and say "what is that I've never heard of it i know what inuyasha is but not yu yu hakusho" and I'm like what the hell is wrong with these people haven't they ever herd of classic animes before or what( I'm like what kind of world do i live in like seriously XD), if u know dbz then u must heard about yu yu hakusho but when I'm on east coast like in north Carolina (to go visit my father) that's where people are familiar with it and I'm like how is that they know more about it here then in California

Thank you for making this dude. Your childhood was pretty much mine after school. I ran my ass off to get home after school. So I could catch the the new ep of DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho and Kenshin. Toonami did make me the person I am to. I learned a lot about life because of Toonami and the lessons it shared. There was a lot of ups and downs in my life but I got through them. I'm going to end this with a quote that is very dear to my heart and I'm sure it is to a lot of you. "Believe in yourself, and create your own destiny. Don't fear failure."

my introduction into anime was in the 80s, and ever since i've been hooked, i still remember my first owned Anime movie on VHS that my mother bought for me from the store "meijer" back in the early 90s called warriors of the wind (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind). I watched Toonami religiously, i watched it when it first aired, all the way to its cancellation (i had mixed emotions that day, anger and sadness, it hit me hard when tom said bang, which took me back to the days of Cowboy bebop). Toonami helped introduce me to so much more anime then ever before and took my love of anime to even greater heights. i remember midnight run, Adult swim, and the specials they aired (intruder, that whole block of animated music videos),and even sci-fi channels limited time with anime on Saturday night/Sunday morning. to this day i still can not remember the name or find the anime that got me hooked back in the 80's the only thing i could remember was a space ship with an AI with a robot head apart of the ships console and human crew, i could be remembering wrong but the AI was sarcastic and they was trying to either rescue someone (maybe a woman) or trying to get off a planet. i also can not remember if it was a movie or a series. between the 80s and toonami something else got me hooked even more into anime which was seeing a few music videos on Mtv (mathew sweets "girlfriend", and his other song "I've been waiting"), and at the time Mtv would also run some Anime as well. Toonami might not have been my introduction into anime, it just cemented my love for anime. Steve Blum is one of my favorite voice actors, and its thanks to Toonami that introduced my to him and Cowboy bebop and for the wonderful times and memories. to this day Cowboy Bebop has to be one of my favorite anime, with DBZ and Tenchi following close behind.

Toonami was something so unique and beautiful for what it was at that time. It was one of the few things that didn't talk down to kids. I remember the 90's and early 00's, the advertising, many shows, Saturday blocks, they were out of touch. They were very "Radical X-treme" type crap. But Toonami came along with shows where the good guys were flawed, where bad guys were more ambigious, where the hero didn't always win. They dealt with loss, with struggle, sadness and pain. But they also had one central theme, being indomidable. Getting up when you get knocked down. Standing up against that which is tough. Never backing down in the face of adversity. To follow your dreams and fighting to get it. Toonami was a ray of hope at the end of a dark tunnel and this video was amazing.

My impressions of what DBZ was at age 6: Some guy protects his son from a bald guy and a green alien guy What DBZ is really about: Goku and his friends and allies go on adventures that lead them to battles with villians who are intent on destorying Earth. What none DBZ fans think it's like: A bunch of buff guys yell and turn yellow and punch bad guys.

For the longest time back in the day I didn't bother to watch DBZ or anime in general, I just remembered it as that weird Asian show where the characters clothes were always shredded and ripped and there was lots of yelling and shouting, I used to turn the TV off after Tom and Jerry was over and the Midnight run would begin, it was because I was a fan of Wrestling (WWF, WCW, ECW) that I finally gave the show a chance and loved it. Then I got hooked on Yu Yu hakusho, and Tenchi Muyo.

I always rooted for Vegeta. I wished that he would get to fight and actually win many more battles than what was shown in the series. Don't get me wrong, I love Goku and all, but after Vegeta started to assimilate with the rest of the Z fighters and "became good", although not _really_, there were all these cut scenes of Vegeta training and they really showed off his sense of resolve and his willingness to push himself as hard as he could. Yeah, I just wish he didn't lose so many battles, that's all. The Goku stuff got kind of monotonous after a while.

Toonami was *DEFINITELY* a huge part of my childhood. I remember watching classic shows like DBZ, Rurouni Kenshin, YuYu Hakusho, Naruto, Bobo and various other animes and action based shows. I was 2 when Toonami first debuted so needless to say I don't remember anything until I was around 3. But regardless I *LOVED* Toonami, Toonami was a huge part of my childhood and is something that definitely introduced a whole generation into anime and manga and just things from others cultures and they're eating it up. I've seen so many great animes, read so many great mangas like Dragonball, Naruto, & Corpse Party (Blood Covered Repeated Fear) to name a few. Watching the ocean dub than funimation dub of DBZ everyday after school and then eventually on Saturdays, the Midnight Run. While it is convenient to watch anime online, it will never compare to sitting down and watching low quality anime and being blown away by it for the first time. I was already done with Cartoon Network by 2007 (12 at the time) but I would always watch on Saturdays JUST for Toonami and after it was ended in 2008 I was done completely. Than that April Fools day joke from Toonami I was asleep that night but I remember being in a light enough sleep to when I heard Tom's voice and thought I'm dreaming of Toonami and I get up and lo and behold there it was *WHO NEEDS SLEEP ANYWAY?!?* needless to say I stayed up all night reliving my childhood as a 16 year old sophomore in high school and me and my friends spent the whole week geeking out about it. Now it's back, while I will admit it isn't the same as it basically is the same Adult Swim line up but Toonami is the new block for it, it still is amazing to see Toonami back on TV. While I would prefer to see the original uncut funimation dub of DBZ since that is what made Toonami famous in the first place Kai is good to. Tom even inspired my catchphrase for my channel and I can't begin to say how awesome it is that Chris got both Tom and Vegeta themselves to guest star on this video. Stay Gold Toonami fans, now and forever!!

Once upon a time I was in a club where members would subtitle anime themselves and distribute them through video tapes. People send in blank tapes and ask for shows they'd like to watch! I too remember going to school and talking about the last episode of DBZ with Pierre, the only other person I knew of in school that liked anime. It was a stigma if you talked about anime so I spoke about it to only Pierre. Yea sad to say but the innovations with the internet destroyed that underground world for us. There was just this feeling you got when you went home and watched the Toonami block or stayed up past bedtime to watch Adult Swim (when it was primarily anime). I couldn't have described it any better sir, it truly was as if the world had stopped just for me.

I remember they'd show the episodes first at midnight then repeat the next day at 5pm. I wish there was a way to have that feeling of seeing it all over again with fresh eyes.

That doesn't make any sense really, Toonami was a programme that had shows it wasn't a show, do you mean the animes that were on Toonami should be brought to Netflix?

Christopher Sabat and Vic Mignogna are probably my favorite voice actors.

Damn, Steve Blum's regular voice just sounds like a raspier Spike and TOM. So awesome! And beyond grateful to him, the production and engineering staff behind Toonami, and, of course, all of the voice actors that helped capture a generation. As well as, helped to expose millions of viewers all over the world to a new medium that has helped shape our lives and continues to resonate our character on a daily basis.

I still remember that night on April 1st just sitting in my room watching t.v when I happened to catch that one night toonami airing, since that night I have honestly not felt any joy or excitement even close to that which is a little bit depressing lol but also a testament to how positive and important toonami has been to a lot of people and their childhood

First time I saw DBZ was when it premiered on Toonami for the first time beginning with Raditz invading the Earth. Sadly I didn't see Dragonball PRIOR to DBZ's Toonami premier, but ever since I was entranced to the DragonBall universe.. Today I'm 25, still watching it, still enjoy pokemon, etc. I'm proud of what Anime has done for me in my childhood and Toonami was where it got me started.

Ooh... a whole new show? Very excited to see what you do with this format going forward. Especially since it seems like a great passionate project for you. Production values seem stepped up from your regular reviews, too. Best of luck on this show! Like what I've seen so far :-)
