That’s an interesting approach. However, for me, it’s much easier to just use the drum replacement feature in Logic for the Kick, snare, and toms. That saves you about 10 steps and you don’t need to worrry about all that timing and back and forth Communication and exporting. You just miss out on the cymbal triggers, but I think live symbols typically sound better anyway. I appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate this type of approach. I guess if I wanted to use VST cymbals, then you’re way might be the way.

I hear ya... this has just proven to be the best way for me to get the most realistic translation from live dynamics and timing to something completely in the box, and I've found no better libraries than what Superior Drummer has to offer.

This is an awesome tutorial. I'm producing my band's recordings and we're going to use this approach. I have a question, though. In your final step of the process, you work with the midi file to adjust the hi hat articulations. Why not doing it directly on SD3 grid editor before exporting the midi file?

Thanks a lot for the comment Pablo! You can totally do the editing inside of SD3... I've just been using the Logic Midi editor for basically my whole life, haha... so it's simply a personal preference thing. Thanks for the subscribe on my new channel!

this is a game changer with a e Kit as well. i can record multi out without mic bleed from my td 27 so my drummer can play as natural as possible then use those audio files in SD3 and get a perfect sound. should make hi hat changes super easy to translate.

Very cool to see this method. As a drummer, I'm usually sitting behind the drums while someone else sits working the DAW. But now I'm trying to learn some of this stuff. I always wonder how people such as yourself learn ALL of the terminology and which buttons to click to do this type of stuff. It's impressive. Quick question: while I prefer to record acoustic drums, my plan is to use a set of V-drums. I'm curious what you found troublesome with using the V-drums? It seems like recording midi would've eliminated the need for some of the steps in this video, but then again, what do I know? Any info you can share would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment JayGo! I appreciate the compliment too 😁 I had two sets of V-Drums over the years. The trouble for me was the dynamics. I haven't been able to get a dynamic performance out of them that matches micing up a real set and then going the SD3 tracker route. That being said, I did use the mid tier V-Drums, so maybe the more high end stuff is more sensitive and better suited for the task. Also what works for me isn't the be all end all I'm sure... It's just where I've found the best results for my songs.

I see a project BPM of 140.1745....Did you have Logic "find tempo" based on that bass track, and that's how you got that fluctuating tempo track? (or did you get the variable tempo track from your live drum playing?) (Edit: Sorry, answer's at 8:35 and 14:37 and 15:14)

Hey thanks for the question. It was a long time ago at this point... it could have been either to be honest, but my memory wants to say that it's from the bass part. Sorry if that doesn't help.

So you do this just because you prefer SD3 sounds rather than your original drum sound right? Very clever, but, wouldn't you like to track your real drum and use that? Or you maybe do so because of your room which maybe provides sounds you feel are unsatisfactory?
@cuomomusiccreation Жыл бұрын
Yes, the vast majority of people recording their own music don't have the best space for tracking drums. That's the idea behind SD3's Tracker: you record your drums in whatever space you have available, and then replace the hits with SD3's samples recorded in the most high end facilities in the world. Sometimes this isn't the best option, but if you're working out of a 8x8 rehearsal room or similar then it could be the only realistic option available. Thanks for the comment!

@@cuomomusiccreation I use SD3 but I didn't dig deep into these features....it's very very clever and useful and I am wandering if toontrack also do the same stuff for other intruments.

I agree tracker and logic work terribly. Its a lot of unnecessary steps for something that should be simple
