Here in Sweden, we tend to ignore "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" in favor of our own film and TV adaptation of the novel. However, I will always praise Rooney Mara as the best version of Lisbeth Salander we've got so far, even more so than Noomi Rapace. And while it's a tragedy that Fincher didn't get to make his trilogy of the Millennium books, I'm so glad we got at least this one movie. Rooney Mara will probably win an Oscar one day, but I'm having a very hard time imagining her being able to top her performance as Lisbeth Salander. She should have won that Oscar over Meryl Streep (in my humble opinion).
@owenbloomfield11775 ай бұрын
I found the Hollywood version a pale imitation of the Swedish one.
@viktortunevi5 ай бұрын
@@owenbloomfield1177 You are entitled to your opinion. I however found the American version to be an improvement as an adaptation of the original novel. When I read the book by Stieg Larson, my vision of his Lisbeth Salander is much more close to the performance of Rooney Mara, than that of Noomi Rapace. The American version also followed the Larson's work more closely than the Swedish one. That's why I prefer it.
@owenbloomfield11775 ай бұрын
@@viktortunevi For me, it was the an overall feel. The American one was just a bit too slick for my tastes. Maybe it was the Swedish actors speaking Swedish in Sweden. More a sense of place. It was a long time ago and my memory fades.

I agree on Driver completely. His wall punch scene with Scarlett Johansson not only launched a thousand memes, but has had real staying power for his performance and heavily influenced the big argument scene in Anatomy of a Fall. That said, Phoenix's win that year was a combination of the halo effects of his late brother River and the late Heath Ledger's Joker Oscar win and also a "it's his time" mentality. Now JP is a damn good actor in his own right, all the way back to his days as "Leaf Phoenix" in Parenthood you could see it. As a fellow Gen X-er I've always held a soft spot for he and River.

I fucking love David Fincher’s film. But my god Rooney Mara blew me away. Lisbeth Salander is my favourite female character of all time. Her character goes through quite the journey & has since she was a child… Rooney just captured her exactly as I imagined her. She changed her appearance. Her accent. Rooney has to do some unimaginable scenes. It’s a role you never see on screen. I can’t rate it high enough. We all know Meryl Streep is iconic but she already had 2 Oscars. She didn’t need a 3rd that year. Rosamund Pike SHOULD have won the Oscar for playing Amy Dunne in Gone Girl. Talk about another fantastic female character in a David Fincher movie… the role of a lifetime. You don’t see many characters like Amy on screen ever. Like Brian said there are so many layers to Amy & her evolution over the course of the film & her unravelling is handled brilliantly in Rosamund’s very capable hands. Adore Julianne Moore but it was her overdue Oscar let’s be honest.

He has always been loved by us fans, but he became a little big for his britches, going up against the Hollywood machine. Definitely courageous, but sunk his Oscar chances for years. It would be admirable, if we all didn’t know how badly he wanted that elusive Oscar.

That movie was the best movie of the year and both Gosling and Michelle should have won. That’s when I realized the Oscars is not about who gives the best performance, it’s about all the $ and the campaigning that the studios do. It’s why the Oscars really are not that relevant anymore. Blue Valentine makes Marriage Story look like a cheesy imitation. I know Gosling doesn’t care about awards - he was only 26 when he was first nominated and I would like to see him get nominated and win one day. Feel he will be another Paul Newman scenario. Years in the future and he’ll get one for his body of work - same for Williams.

Jonah Hill for Moneyball at #1 is a bold choice.

Yup. Not that great a performance, only different to most of his other stuff and therefore noteworthy

And yeah what a shame that Sandra Bullock didn't win for gravity unfortunately she was up against a career performance by the phenomenal Cate blanchett

Remember all the Leo memes where it was about his lack of Oscars instead of dating only women 25 or under? Simpler times

I am still convinced that since get out got a ton of nominations in 2017, Hereditary got ignored ESPECIALLY TONI COLET the next year. I wanted to like Get Out so bad, and while it was ok it didn’t blow me away. I went into Hereditary with no expectations and it turned into one of my favorite films. Editing since I’m more into the video. Leo’s win should have been for The Aviator. Fully agree on Melissa McKarthy I 100% disagree with you on Gravity. The movie was awful, both Sandra Bulik and Clooney were awful in it. I get your point on her tragic backstory, and the effects were good, but the whole thing was Oscar bait without being a biography or a period piece.

Gone Girl was pretty bad, it kind of started well but it kept gettng worse, not helped by Ben Affleck at all. I agree Rosamund was great in it though.

The Master is a masterpiece. I rather Joaquin Phoenix should have won for this movie and I think it's better than the Joker performance
