Brian, as a brazilian, thank you for remembering the magnificent performance of Fernanda Montenegro in “Central Station”. This is the all-time best performance in brazilian cinema. Fernanda was also our greatest stage actress in decades, but is now retired over 90 years old. It was a very hard competition for a foreign actress at the Oscar by that time, and still is. In Berlin Film Festival, “Central Station” won the Golden Bear and she was awarded best actress.

@@monicaangelini3324 As great as Cate Blanchett was, there have been a lot of great depictions of Queen Elizabeth I and Glenda Jackson (who played her twice) will always be No. 1 for me (Elizabeth R and Mary, Queen of Scots. Fernanda Montenegro gave an original, heartbreaking performance that no other actress could possibly match.

I was invited to this party at SoHo House in Berlin shortly after Alicia Wikander had won her Oscar. Quite a small, yet posh party, so I actually was introduced to her quite early on during the evening. Congratulated her for her win, but finished my sentence with "You should have had it for Ex-Machina instead". She took that complinsult really well (she actually seemed to be shocked that anyone had seen "Ex-Machina") And was a very lovely young lady towards everyone throughout the entire night. Gots to love her.

I thought Jamie Lee Curtis was good in Everything Everywhere All At Once, she was both funny and had a few emotional scenes in the third act. But I don’t think it was enough to win an Oscar and she wasn’t even like the standout performance of the movie. I thought Stephanie Hsu was easily the superior Supporting Actress performance of the film. Kerry Condon should’ve won Best Supporting Actress last year as she was my pick to win. It’s still disappointing that Banshees won nothing at the Oscars. No acting wins, screenplay and sadly lost steam after BAFTAs gave it to All Quiet on the Western Front.

I think JLC deserved to win 🤷🏻‍♀️ She gave emotional depth to what otherwise could have been an extremely one-note character. It was out of her typical wheelhouse of self-aware characters. And how her relationship with Evelyn evolves from adversarial to a place of real human connection is instrumental in the growth we see in Michelle Yeoh’s character, which is fundamentally what a supporting performance does. Support the main performance. Stephanie Hsu equally deserved it. I thought Kerry condon was fine.

As for Jude Law winning that category was so incredibly stacked. I agree that Michael Caine was by far the weakest in that category. Yet even he was really excellent. If Tom Cruise, Law, Osment, or Clarke Duncan had won any of them would have been deserving. It would be interesting to see the vote total breakdown and who came in second through fifth places. Because it was difficult for voters to choose only one.

This is an awesome video! I wasn't aware or couldn't remember some of these races. I absolutely agree with many of your choices, especially #1. Colin Firth is so magnetic and credible in A Single Man. You really feel for him and only want a happy ending for such a tragic character. Jake Gyllenhaal's win for Brokeback Mountain was a breath of fresh air that season. Heath Ledger got stomped all season long, and Michelle Williams only won Critic's Choice so yes, any win for the Brokeback actors was welcomed. Please do the same, but for the Best Picture category. Usually, Oscars and BAFTA diverge a lot when it comes to Best Movie of the Year (Roma v. Green Book, The Power of the Dog v. Coda, Everything Everything All at Once v. All Quiet on the Western Front, etc.) That would be a fun one too!

Thanks Brian for such an admirable and wonderful video... And what a great list!... I'm thrilled. You made fair and reasonable arguments about each and every case and I'm in total agreement with you about all those preferences. I just want to add last year's Cate Blanchett win at Bafta (over Michelle Yeoh) for an incredibly powerful and moving performance in Tar, a performance that will definitely remain in memories. That's one of best and most masterful performances of all time, not just in 21st century and not only among female performances. Anyhow, Bafta got it right, and gave her the award. I can't wait to see Emma Stone and Cillian Murphy win at this year's Oscar night, although unfortunately I'm not sure/optimist enough to predict that they both will win! But I think Bafta may do the right thing again, and give them both their rightful awards. Both performances are (in my humble opinion) THE best and most daring and deserving among their respectful rivals'.

I honestly don't get the hate Paltrow gets. Sure, she's not the greatest of actresses, but she's not the worst either. She's a nepobaby, sure, but so are Jane Fonda or Laura Dern, who are beloved and respected. Some shenanigans went down for her to win? Maybe. But the Academy proved time and time again that it doesn't need HW to make strange choices. Does anyone remember Judy Holiday? Cliff Robertson? Rami Malek? Worse of all, Rex Harrison? And that's from the top of my head. From what I noticed, the Academy goes mostly for the following: 1. the "showy" performance, either incarnating a real person , someone with a disability or mental health issue of some sort, or bereaved with grief. 2."honorary" award-someone who is beloved and long overdue; în this category usually the actor almost always has to fit also the 1. criteria. 3.going against type. Is she a glamorous, beautiful actress, known for comedy roles? If she makes a serious movie being ugly, it's almost guaranteed a win especially if she also respects the no.1 criteria. 4. Voting like sheep. I'm pretty convinced a lot of voters don't watch all the nominated movies and just vote for the most buzz or personal like/dislike of the nominated actor. That being said, I love both Bridges and Firth but A Single Man stayed with me since i saw it and you don't need to be lgBtq+ to understand human heart, you just need to have one.

Like yes Angela is one of my favorite actresses ever but if Stephanie would have won I would have got it but Jamie winning was all politics. Kerry carried that movie not gonna lie I loved the dark humor of it all and her performance was a heartfelt. She played that character with so much emotion and heart and passion she was the right choice for that character. The Academy has time to make up for it she just needs a role that is worthy of her talents not that “Night Swim” bullshit.

I love Michelle Yeoh, but Blanchett gave the performance of the decade so far in TÁR. I understand that Yeoh win was important. But Blanchett in TÁR is another level.

I’ve watched Tar. I love Blanchett, but that film is terrible. In certain scenes, the acting is stiff. In other scenes, it’s so pantomime that it’s almost like a joke. I’m a musician, and I found the subject matter in Tar interesting. But the film is so drab

Why was the Yeoh win important if Blanchett gave the performance of the decade so far? Blanchett was robbed, pure and simple.

I honestly found Tár miserable to get through and the only reason I pushed through was for Cate Blanchett. Otherwise I would’ve turned it off after about 30 minutes. Michelle Yeoh was so good in Everything Everywhere All at Once and I’m glad she won.

Same! I love Blanchett. But Tar was not the one. That win would’ve aged like milk.

im so happy jamie lee curtis won. yea i would of enjoyed a stephanie hsu win more of course but jamie was fantastic in everything everywhere all at once. kerry condon would of been last on my list of those five nominees. i liked banshees of inisherin but out of the best picture nominees last year i would of ranked it like 9th or 8th place. but i will say she was one of my favorite parts of the film.

New subscriber here! How crazy when you named the year Jennifer Lawrence won best actress because I always thought about that! I never understood that she won, although in my case it was because I thought that Naomi Whats deserved it for The Impossible, but whenever I remember that she won I can't understand why?! Her performance was great, but nothing superior to the other nominees... great video :) I'll go see the others.

Mine are Philippe Noiret and Salvatore Cascio ( respectively leading and supporting actor) from Cinema Paradiso: a very courageous and far-sighted choice for that era in which very few non-English speaking actors were rewarded.

Yeah... I didn't like Banshees and loved EEAAO, yet when Kerry Condon lost to Jamie Lee Curtis at the Oscars, I was like: 😐 Uhm... Just no. Kerry deserved this one.

Fabulous video. I agree with you on almost all of these wins/losses. Brokeback Mountain was robbed at the Oscars considering it is one of the best movies of the 21st Century so far. Michelle, Heath and Jake should have all one. Philip Seymour Hoffman was great in Capote, but Heath Ledger’s performance was far superior. How sad that both men have left us. Banshees was my favorite film last year and it, along with the cast, deserved more love at the Oscars.

A single man is an incredible movie, it tackles many hot topics, brings up heartbreaking experiences but it's done in a subtle way without so loved by Oscar public crying and shouting acting. Colin was sublime there, it is a noble performance.

Can you do a video for Musical/Comedy category fraud at the Golden Globes? Obviously those extra categories have allowed some truly deserving people to win awards but there's so many performances and movies I see in those categories that I would not label musical or comedy. Although melodrama are hard to place.

I really agree for Kerry Condon's win for Banshee. I really had hoped that she would win Oscars as well. She was extremely good in that movie. I wish to see her in more movies. I think I had the same hope for Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl, but she lost at BAFTA as well.

Jeff Bridges & Colin Firth should have switched win years. It's kinda funny they were both nominated against each other twice. Seeing Bridges win a legacy Oscar for a Coen brothers movie would have been much more satisfying!
