Toni Collette missing a Best Actress nomination for her spectacular job in Hereditary has got to be the most frustrating, sad, and unbelievable thing to happen at the Oscars in recent years. It's even worse than Denis Villeneuve missing his nomination for Dune. As with every snub it's always important to think about it in context. In other words, if you put someone in you have to take someone out of the eventual nominees list. I'm happy to see you talked about who should've been replaced in many of your choices. Another great video!!

The fact that Collette and Gyllenhall only have one academy award nomination each really is shocking to me they're two of my favorites, and the fact that Amy Adams hasn't won yet really gets to me. The movie you mentioned for each of their snubs are movies I'm a huge fan of. One performance that is incredibly underrated and is absolutely worth a nomination is Leo DiCaprio in Shutter Island. The movie itself was pushed back from a fall to a February release date and it was overshadowed by Inception, being another psychological Leo starring movie of 2010, but his performance in it is literally perfect. The dream sequences and the scene towards the end at the lake are haunting mainly because he sells it so well. Another one for best actor that I remember being upset about was JGL in 50/50. It's funny because that movie is rather personal to me in that I had a close family member get diagnosed less than two months after it was released but he sells the despair and hopelessness a cancer diagnosis so well.

Thank you for another great video! I’m surprised you didn’t mention Hong Chau for “Downsizing,” despite being nominated for a ton of precursors that year. Kirsten Dunst not being nominated for Melancholia is one of the snubs I remember being really upset about at the time, and it still annoys me. She was so wonderful in it. I also wish Never Let Me Go got more attention as while I can understand the film is not for everyone as it's quite melodramatic in tone (which I like but not everyone does) the performances are stellar and really elevate it. Possibly they just didn't know who to pick, but Keira Knightley would be my top choice. And with all the very correct outrage for Toni Collette not being nominated, it's also baffling to me that Alex Wolff wasn't in there either, he gave a unique and extremely effective performance that stays with me well after the film is over. My number one snub of the 2010s is Taraji P. Henson for Hidden Figures. Her performance as Katherine was astounding, and I've never understood how the Academy could snub her, especially seeing how Octavia Spencer got nominated for the same movie.

I met Alicia Vikander at a party shortly after her Oscar win. And I congratulated her for the Oscar, but said "You were great, but you actually deserved an Oscar for Ex Machina instead." Vikander is for the record very friendly, extremely humble and has no diva antics whatsoever.

@@TheAwardsContender She took it well, whereas her PR manager was shocked. But she was super friendly, too. Did not see the convo taking that turn, though, but was happy to hear that someone actually had seen "Ex Machina".

One I never see get brought up is Daniel Bruhl in Rush. It’s a very calculated performance where Bruhl is basically expected to play a real-life person as a borderline sociopath, but he absolutely nailed it - and got nominated at both the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs for it. But the film ended up going empty-handed on Oscar night.

I don't fully agree with Andrew Garfield. To be honest, for me, both of the main performances in The Social Network: Jesse as Zuckerberg, and Andrew as his friend, were not Oscar-worthy at all, and quite bland. But out of the two, Andrew was def the better one. Maybe he could have gotten in the place of Mark Ruffalo because Ruffallo's role in The Kids Are All Right wasn't an amazing one either, and it could be argued that Garfield's one was better. That is all as the nominations go in this category in 2011, but the supporting actor winner that year was absolutely spot on: Christian Bale in The Fighter is a masterpiece of a performance. He was better Dicky than Dicky!

i casually watched some of your other videos about acting awards and always wondered, if there might be one about missed oscar nominations and whether toni colette would be on it. abd lo and behold there is a video, AND SHE'S NUMBER ONE! i think about her incredible performance on a regular basis for years now, and how she deserved so much recognition for this stellar showing.

Honestly incredible picks, and I agree 100% with the top 10, especially the top 4 and most importantly Top 1, yeah, Toni’s performance is a once in a lifetime , how she portrait grief from a very human and real way, and part of why the movie is so draining and oppressive is because u FEEL what she’s feeling, is like the same feeling of going to a funeral in real life and seen the screams, the pain, it was all to real and she was by far the best acting that year, hell is one of the best performances I seen in my life, top 5 one

I loved Lupita in US. I also think Jennifer Hudson gave the best performance of 2021. To this day, Lupita and Jennifer are the only black actresses who scored Leading And Supporting nods from SAG (apart from Viola). But the Academy chose safed options. I do think if Jennifer was submitted in Musical/ Comedy she woulda won the Globe over Rachel Zegler

I agree Danielle Deadwyler should have been nominated but I’m positive she’ll be back in the Oscars race as it was announced she’ll be in the film adaptation of The Piano Lesson. This is an August Wilson play and Viola Davis is known for getting Oscar nominations for his work. So….🙏🙏🙏🙏

There's a lot of good buzz for that film especially because of the play which is in contention at the Tonys this year. She might finally get recognition for that film hopefully, it has a strong ensemble of actors too.

Yes, this list is perfect! I'd say the cast of "Mass" had an uphill battle especially the cast members would be considered Supporting but both Dowd and Plimpton wete astonishing. With lesser actresses they would have been one note performances! Also, you left out Lily Tomlin in "Grandma" she was campaigned in Supporting but she was the title character and in every scene in the film and should have received a lead nomination!

Great video - and I agree with you wholeheartedly especially about Toni Collette. Funnily enough when you were talking about horror movie bias I immediately thought of Toni and then there it was as your no. 1 snub. Agreed. It's ridiculous about the whole horror movie bias - it's an intense and emotive genre when done right but there are those, and I bet they are in the award show members that equate horror with slasher so it's immediately dismissed. What a shame. She is phenomenal in it and it's baffling how she was overlooked. You frequently mention good performances in so-so movies or movies that weren't popular. They cannot seem to separate the performance from the movie itself. And isn't the performance what they should be focusing on? My own personal outrage at Oscar snubs is Leslie Manville for Another Year - one of the most heart-breaking performances I have ever seen - the best portrayal of depression put on screen and apart from a Bafta nomination and some others, she was hideously overlooked.
@TheAwardsContender Жыл бұрын
Manville is amazing!! Thanks for your informative comment!

Love this list! One performance I would love to add (in my humble opinion) is Mia Goth in Pearl. Her performance was so dynamic I was absolutely glued to the screen. I wish horror films were recognized more in general, some amazing films over the past decade that fly completely under the radar. Honorable mentions to Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive, Laura Dern in Inland Empire, and Sheryl Lee in Fire Walk with Me (as you can see I love Lynch)

Leslie Manville in Another Year is my number 1 snub. It's one of my favorite performances. So nuanced, funny, and depressing. Of course, Mike Leigh films don't get the recognition they deserve, but with a Best Original Screenplay nomination that year, she deserved a nomination. She got one for Phantom Thread, but she's better in Another Year. My #2 is Ben Foster not getting nominated for Hell or High Water. Bridges was good, but that was Foster's film. He deserved a nomination for Leave No Trace as well. #3 for me would be Joel Edgerton in Loving. It's such an understated role, totally lacking glamor and flash, but the subtle nuances and the way he just inhabits the role is really something. Negga was just as good and got a nomination.
@navidhudson7065 Жыл бұрын
Ben Foster by this point is insanely overdue for Oscar recognition, he's constantly been putting out amazing but underrated work. I hope he gets the Sam Rockwell treatment.
@MattrickBT Жыл бұрын
@@navidhudson7065 I've been a fan of Foster since Six Feet Under. I knew he was a special talent back then. I also loved his work in Galveston. Rockwell was long overdue too. Foster had never really had that great role that broke out into the public eye until Hell or High Water was a big success. Hopefully he will get another great role that plenty of people see.
@navidhudson7065 Жыл бұрын
@@MattrickBT Yeah I first saw him in the teen flick Get Over It and it's insane how far he's come ever since. He definitely got more notices after Hell or High Water, this year he was overlooked for that Will Smith drama Emancipation which he seemed like a contender at one point. Hopefully his Oscars chance will come closer.

Delroy Lindo for Da 5 Bloods has always been an Oscar snub to really annoy me, a few others from the 2020s that spring to mind are Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim for Licoirce Pizza, Rachel Zegler and Mike Faist for West Side Story, Jean Smart for Babylon and Paul Dano for The Fabelmans.
