A couple of honorable mentions from older TV shows: (1) David Ogden Stiers, aka Major Charles Emerson Winchester on "MASH". His Boston accent was fake, but he could do other accents just as convincingly. I didn't know until a few years ago that he was the voice of Cogsworth in "Beauty and the Beast". (2) Ken Curtis, aka Festus on "Gunsmoke". His nasal southern twang was fake, and he had a beautiful singing voice. Before he took on the role of Festus, he was lead singer with the Sons of the Pioneers, and before that, he was a vocalist for Tommy Dorsey.

Billie Piper;s accent as Rose in Doctor Who (first two seasons of New Who) is very different from her real one. She was known before that, so people did know that wasn't her real voice. But, just been re-watching the first season and I did notice how different it is.

Good call! Even though I've heard her real accent multiple times, I can never shake the feeling that the Rose accent is her real one! And, of course, David Tennant has used is Estuary English accent in multiple projects, too; but I can adjust more easily to his native Scottish one.

John Boyega (Finn in the last 3 Star Wars films) deserves to be on this list too... he absolutely NAILS an American accent in spite of the fact that his normal accent is decidedly South London (I am Canadian born/raised and now living in London). I had read somewhere that he was British before I saw The Last Jedi (episode 8) but it didn't occur to me that he was anything but American when I was watching the film. I got quite the jolt when I heard the South London come tumbling out of his mouth afterwards.

I remember being in complete shock when I heard Idris Elba speak in his native tongue. I only knew him from the The Wire at the time, and the show was so authentic I thought they only cast people from the Baltimore-area, or at least only Americans. A brilliant performance. Remember feeling the same way when I heard Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman speak in their native accent too. That's the magic of acting, I guess.

You can add virtually all actors from the UK, Canada, Australia and the rest of the Commonwealth - they all need to learn how to speak with an American accent, if they want to work in the USA. They are generally also remarkably good at staying in their adopted accent - one particularly notable example that struck me recently is Dominique Provost-Chalkley, who plays Waverly Earp; hearing her speak in her normal British accent is stunning. Oddly, American actors never seem to learn how to speak with anything other than an American accent, no matter what the nationality of the character that they are playing.

Besides Hugh Laurie the only time I've surprised about an actors accent has been Dominique Provost-Chalkley. I was so astounded to find out she was from the UK and with the lines she was saying, that was hard enough without worrying about not showing your accent and then they had her do a fake british accent totally different from her real one. She's just so talented! 😍

You were close with John Barrowman, but David Tennant, uses a british/queen's english accent in most of his shows, including Doctor Who, but uses hi native Scottish accent for interviews for fun. You also have Jodie Comer from Killing Eve (English), Jamie Bamber from Battlestar Galactica (English), Stephen Moyer from True Blood (English) and Matthew Rhys from The Americans (Welsh). The lovely Gillian Anderson is also a gifted bidialectual.

I've been watching House lately, so I had already known years ago that it wasn't his native accent. Anyone who had seen the live action version of 101 Dalmatians will remember him as Jaspar where he used his native accent. You may not have realized it was him in 101 Dalmatians, but Hugh taking the spotlight in House really could've convinced anyone if they hadn't seen him before.
