When I revisted Boston's debut album recently I thought I accidently had purchased their greatest hits CD. I was baffled to be reminded that all these incredible songs could have possibly come on one album. Unheard of!

Where I’m originally from in PA, my local rock station played every song from the album. They’re all hits, as far as I’m concerned, so it basically is a greatest hits album. 🙂

A few comments: Rumours - I know you know this but we have to mention Christine McVie, who wrote Don't Stop, Songbird and You Make Loving Fun Boston - I was in high school and you would hear Boston cranked up in everyone's car stereo. I had a convertible and played that album over and over again, everywhere I drove, so no one could miss it. Journey - I wasn't able to enjoy it back then when it came out, because my friends and I were SO into the first three fusion albums. We thought Perry poppified and chickified the band. Rush - A marvelous album and another one that was cranked up in my Camaro. YYZ baby. Van Halen - As guitar obsessed guys, everyone loved the Van Halen debut. Guns and Roses - I love the mix of different musical themes in songs; that keeps things so interesting. AC/DC - Angus Young: “I'm sick to death of people saying we've made 11 albums that sound exactly the same. In fact, we've made 12 albums that sound exactly the same.” One of the greatest rock quotes of all time. Dark Side - I blew my Dad's right speaker in the living room playing this album, on the track On The Run. Also, the idea to use the room full of clocks ticking and then ringing was that of Alan Parsons. Zeppelin - My favorite is Levee - that guitar/bass/drum playing is so heavy, one of the heaviest songs ever recording. "If it keeps on rainin', levee's gonna break..."

I'd like to add a sleeper with these classic albums, The Outfield - "Play Deep" (1985.) I really love that album especially the deep cuts, along with Mr. Mister's "Welcome To The Real World" and Simple Minds "Once Upon A Time" - ALL from the very same year. Three great memorable blockbuster albums from my 5th grade year in elementary school. ALL very underrated, imo. I can't believe you like The Outfield, also. It's very unusual to see a fan of 80s glam metal like a new wave/AOR band like The Outfield or Mr. Mister.
@SO-ym3zs

Play Deep is woefully underappreciated. I wouldn't rank it with the same albums he's discussing, but it's an awesome power pop/AOR album. Everyone treats the Outfield like they only wrote one song. They are much better than that.

Nice list Brendon. Personally I'd put Rumors and Boston's debut closer to the top and my number one would be Back in Black. No offense to Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin. I too am a huge Pink Floyd fan. I think I would have also replaced Journey Escape and put The Wall into this top ten along with Dark Side of the Moon. One other replacement would have been Frampton Comes Alive! in place of Moving Pictures. Just my thoughts. Still very nice list and great video. Keep up the good work. 👍

Hi Brendon, I have a great CD rock collection also. Actually I have every CD you've shown in my collection, except my "Appetite For Destruction" is an anniversary edition with an extra CD. I admire your CD collection. I only have around 2600 CDs last time I counted and I've been through my 4th collection so far. I lost my other 4 collections through theft or selling them when I was needing money, if I would've kept or still had them I'd have around 7000 CDs now. But I have a great collection at the moment. Great video. You're very knowledgeable. Have a great week.

Good morning Brendon. I just subscribed to your channel a couple of days ago. Before I downsized, I had about 2,000 CDs, about 40% rock, including the first three you mentioned and your number one. I sold every non-classical CD I had and now have neither CDs nor anything on which to play them. But I did have some great rock CDs including the first two by Lynyrd Skynyrd, all by Genesis, all by the Eagles, and others A to Z.

Great list, Brendon. I still have my Guns ‘N’ Roses Appetite cassette from 1987 and Moving Pictures on cassette. Replaced Van Halen cassette (worn out) with a new vinyl. I have Boston on CD (remastered) and a first pressing vinyl, Back In Black 2003 pressing. I have Escape on cassette and CD (remastered). I actually prefer Infinity over Escape because it captures a moment in time when Journey still had some prog elements with newly added Steve Perry. (ironically, I do not currently own a copy of Infinity). I still have Hysteria on cassette somewhere. Got the 2016 pressing of Dark Side Of The Moon 🌑 Some others to consider: Asia debut (AOR/album rock) Krokus - Headhunter (Metal) Firefall debut (country rock/soft rock) Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown (folk rock) Yes - Close To The Edge (progressive rock) Genesis - Selling England By The Pound (progressive rock) Rush - 2112 (progressive metal) Steely Dan - Aja (jazz rock) Kansas debut (progressive rock)

Nothing wrong with any of those selections, Brendon. I prefer the self-titled "white album" by Fleetwood Mac to Rumours, but there is no denying that record's impact, Boston's debut, excellent. Journey, great pick but I prefer "Infinity," when they still had Gregg Rollie in the band. Moving Pictures by Rush, one of their best albums, which has my friend Mike Dixon on the cover (the guy with the bald head and big moustache). I posted the original version of "Tear It Down" by Def Leppard on my KZbin channel, and it's one of my most popular videos, with its much rawer and rocking sound. I think I prefer Pyromania to this album, but again, you can't deny that record's success. Can't argue with Van Halen 1. "The Atomic Punk" is my favourite track. Guns N Roses debut, excellent. Axl sings like someone torturing a cat, but it works. If you own Back In Black and Highway To Hell, you have AC/DC's best two records. Dark Side Of The Moon - a recording masterpiece. Yeah, and Led Zep 4, everyone needs to own that album. I think their first four albums, and Physical Graffiti, are all must-owns.

Hi Brendon, speaking of Fleetwood Mac, have you heard the album Aurora by Daisy Jones & the SIx? Superb FM Rumours-era and Classic American Rock album by a band actually made up for a book and (now) a Mini-series. It's really excellent and proves that big labels can still produce great Classic Rock. And it has Riley Keough, grand-daughter of Elvis Presley on Lead vocals, which to me, validates it even more. Great stuff. Great list you got there! Cheers.

I can easily see why people dislike Rush because of Geddy's voice, but it's too bad that they can't listen beyond the voice. All three members are very talented musicians, especially Neil (R.I.P.,) and their instrumentals are timeless classics. But music is subjective, and you and Anthony both made mention of that. People like what they like. Not all tastes are the same. I'll admit that it took me awhile to like Rush. Finally got into them when I entered 7th grade. That was 1987.

I’m the same way. If I can’t get into the way someone sings I’m not interested in the band. Doesn’t matter how great the music is. It needs to be a total package. Plus with all the music in the world, why should people have to force themselves to listen to a band they don’t like?

@@BrendonSnyder I can certainly respect that. I can't get into Green Day or Weezer, although the latter is sort of growing on me as I get older. I will say Weezer did a decent cover of Toto's "Africa" with Steve Porcaro producing and accompanying the band on their rendition of the smash hit. Green Day? Never really was a big fan of those guys from the outset. Only like one song. That's it for me. I don't like the way BJA sings.

Brendon, That's a great list. Mostly inarguable even though I may not agree with every one being a masterpiece [Appetite for Destruction]. Leaving room for your genre interpretation of the following albums but staying with every song is excellent I faithfully submit for your consideration; The Who Who's Next, Deep Purple Machine Head, The Cars (debut self-titled), Aerosmith Rocks, Lynyrd Skynyrd (debut self-titled), ZZ Top Tres Hombres, Bad Co. (debut self-titled), Dire Straits (debut self-titled) and finally does Pearl Jam Ten count? Too Grunge? I think all of those albums are faultless. I ask that you look for yourself. I wonder if you agree. [Final note "Wish You Were Here" is superior to DSOTM and "Animals" is my favorite PF album. Your thoughts on that?]. Thank you for thinking of this topic.

Really tough to not be subjective on these lists. These are, I suppose, good choices. Certainly well-made and extremely popular. I only own 2 from the list: oddly enough your first and last - Zep 4 and Rumours. I think I could go a decade or so without hearing G&R, Def Leo, Journey or Van H... and not really miss them. Especially Def L.... yawn. And Dark Side, I still contend, is a very overrated album. It's good... just... As a Canadian, I'm glad Rush made it... even though I'm not a huge fan. I still have trouble with Geddy's voice. We tend to lean towards our personal faves a bit. Someone in another comment suggested Live at Leeds. This leads me to comment on the lack of Townshend's genius on this list. In just a 5 yr pd there are enough brilliant Who albums to fill almost half the list of 'must haves': Tommy (69), Leeds (70), Who's Next (71), Quadrophenia.

I realise it is entirely subjective but no “Top Ten” of rock albums can be considered definitive without either (or both) of Spirit’s two masterpieces: ‘The Family That Plays Together Stays Together’ and ‘The Twelve Dreams Of Dr.Sardonicus’. Both splendid albums, by a great, often sadly overlooked band. If only they had appeared at Woodstock, their fortunes, one can safely assume, would have been much different.

It’s not a Top 10…just 10 albums to own. I own over 12,000 so I’m not saying these are the ONLY 10 albums to own. And you’re right it’s all subjective in the end of the day. These are bands that I love and thing all rock fans should own in their collection along with other albums.

Sorry, but the Boston and Journey albums are entirely dispensable and unlikely to get within a million miles of any self-respecting rock critic’s “Ten essential Rock Albums To Own” list. Albums by Journey, Boston, Kansas, REO Speedwagon and Styx, are all made in a very formulaic manner and this was borne out by an excellent BBC4 documentary on the subject. When albums by the aforementioned artists are first recorded and then mixed, the producer, aided by a frightfully expensive mixing desk, is king of all proceedings. When it came to dazzling musicianship, finesse, artistry, strangeness, and a thrilling capacity to surprise, few acts of the time other, perhaps, than Frank Zappa’s Mothers, came close to Spirit’s propensity for adventure and experimentalism. For this reason, listening to the seminal works of Randy California, Ed Cassidy and John Locke, should become, for all students of fine rock music, a matter of absolute necessity. Or as they say, “required listening”! Thank you for a most enjoyable channel, the enthusiasm is infectious. Keep it up!

@@BrendonSnyder Of course, opinions will forever be divided; each of us may gravitate to whatever genre/artist we choose but is it any coincidence most if not all respected music journalists are universal in their barbed criticism of US arena rock? They too love music and probably absorb more of it than anybody (it is the means by which they earn their living). The same music writers who make no secret of their disapproval of Boston and Journey, would happily embrace several of the choices in your “Top Ten”. People, I know, will accuse me of elitism but I do find myself agreeing with much - not all - of what a rock music critic writes. Incidentally, did you know ‘More Than a Feeling’ by Boston, has appeared on more various artists rock compilation albums than any other song?

The Boston album was good. But anyone who saw them in concert back in the day knows that they couldn’t pull it off live. Very disappointing. Maybe if you did a top 25 threre would’ve been a little less controversy, but I don’t agree with much of “this” top 10. Foreigners debut album… certainly worthy of consideration.

I saw Boston live twice, once in 1977 and then in 1978. The 77 show was amazing. The 78 show they sounded like they were on speed or something. Every song was played way too fast, and it was awful. Is that what you experienced too or was it something else?

Zeppelin have varied styles, more so than the other two bands you don’t like, GnR and VH. With Zeppelin you get hard rock, blues, folk, rock n roll, eastern and celtic mysticism, even a little prog... I only say that because whenever I come across people who don’t like them, they usually say something like ‘too bluesy’ and I wonder how much they have heard. When I first got into Zeppelin I didn’t hear the so called blues copycat stuff that a lot of people critique them for. I heard this weird compelling mystical thing, totally far from that, almost Celtic and pagan...you only pick up on it if you delve deep into their music.

I am 67 and grew up listening to much better music than those, but just my opinion and their fans are not wrong for liking them. I just think they are younger and didn't really appreciate what was before that. Kudos to you and your videos. I do enjoy them! Peace!

Brendon, sorry. GnR, Def Leppard, Van Halen isn't rock, it's Hard Rock, or Glam metal. Led Zeppelin ranks also to Hardrock. Rush and Pink Floyd is prog, Fleetwood Mac is pop. AC/DC with Back in Black is Heavy Metal. All of all it's also a very american list, many of those albums were hits but only in the US. So it's quite strange to see that list as a european. I would put Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms, Eric Clapton - Journeyman and Dżem-Najemnik on the list.

@@melprophet1936 Oh, yeah. Classic rock stations don't play Guns n Roses, Van Halen, AC/DC (or Rush-prog) around here. That's too much "noise" to be called just as rock here. I've heard Def Leppard and Pink Floyd, but with PF they always play tunes from The Wall or AMLOR, more radiofriendly tunes than from DSOTM, which is too much prog to be considered radio-friendly rock I think. They play Led Zeppelin but barely one tune - you know which one. Rock station's play mostly Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Bon Jovi, Tom Petty, Roxette, Rod Stewart, ELO, Manic Street Preachers, Billy Idol, Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Kim Wilde, Cher, Joan Jett and local artists. They sometimes play Kiss (I was made for lovin you, Reason to live ) and Deep Purple (Smoke on the water) but if, only those. I know it's boring but they would never play more aggressive music like Welcome to the jungle.
