It’s funny when I was a kid I wanted the graphics to be arcade perfect which was unrealistic back in the 80’s & now here in 2023 a lot of games look “Arcade Perfect “ & now this old 51 year old appreciates the old graphics to the Atari 2600,hopefully it makes sense?!

Moon Patrol and Jungle Hunt looked good so I bought them in 1983, but Jungle Hunt had some control issues. People say Joust, Mario Bros., and Popeye were good, but they looked so bad, and didn't see them on the cheap at the thrift store when I built up my collection to 100 carts.

Same here. I also now have an appreciation for what they could do with such a basic system. I’m amazed that some of the games like Jungle Hunt were even possible to do on the 2600.

Someone said Donkey Kong, which is disappointing is amazing because they were able to make the ramps diagonal, whereas most other games have to have horizontal lines and be symmetrical left and right. Still, it wasn't much fun if you played more than 15 minutes.

Oh man, what an excellent topic! This is great! And, this brought something to mind that I never thought if yet. Great video as always, sir. My only problem is I don't have any local stores that carry classic games like Atari. I trully hope Atari continues to re-release some of their classic titles., hopefully at cheaper prices and start including the manuals too as they don't now which is unfortunate.

I love this list, however, I would strongly encourage people to purchase Stargate instead of Defender and Millipede instead of Centipede. The alternatives I suggest are essentially the same game as those in the list but with dramatically upgraded gameplay and better graphics. Stargate and Millipede are probably more than $5.00 but once you play either it's doubtful you'll ever want to go back to the originals that inspired them. A hint for Atari Defender: your ship disappears every time you fire. If you fire frantically and continually, your ship disappears almost completely, together with its collision box. Rapid firing means you can often fly through enemies without colliding with them. Seaquest is very unusual compared to most games of the era in that the difficulty level is such that most people can make their game last for many minutes, maybe even hours but the difficulty still gets high enough for the game to be frantic and fun. If you like to see how long you can play a single game, this is great one to try. Missile Command has a children's variation (from memory it is Game 31) which can also be played for many hours since the extra cities are awarded at about the same rate as you will lose cities. I was hospitalised in 1982 and had my parents bring my Atari VCS in so I could pass the time. I played a single kid's game of Missile Command for over 4 hours, much to the annoyance of my doctor who tried checkup on me halfway into the marathon session (no pause buttons on the original VCS). Yeah, doctoring is important but I don't think he grasped the critical nature of getting those million-point-game bragging rights.

I'm wondering if there is going to be a way to import in ROMs into the Atari 2600+ since the console is running with Stella emulation software. I lost all my old cartridges from my childhood years ago during divorce. I hate to have to go back and try to buy used ones all over again. I do see that the Atari 2600+ is coming with a cartridge that has 10 games. In the past, I've bought the Atari Flashback Classics for XBox One. I wish there would be a similar packaging that I would be willing to buy the Flashback Classics in a Cartridge if they had them bundled in groups like that. Bonus if there were the ACTUAL arcade ROMs to play also in an Atari 2600+. I guess I'm just pipedreaming... I'm close to pulling that trigger and buying one... but I just don't want to hunt down beat up used cartridges off eBay or garage sales. This GenXer is getting too old to go on a hunt. Even if the Atari 2600+ had a way to purchase games online with the console would be more enticing to me.

The 7800 only sold 150,000 units, as compared to the 2600, which dropped into 30 million households-at a time when “Oh, he’s joking, honey; nobody owns two television set game consoles” was heard-and so even Games by Apollo’s (1982) _Lost Luggage_ for the 2600 sold far more copies than any 7800 game - but only because two per console woulda been overkill. Great game, for what it was ($5), but it’s hardly a fair comparison, considering that _Sneak n’ Peak_ ($1, swear to god, at Kay-Bee™️... ) was once a staple in the houses of millions who are still alive, to this day, while _Ninja Golf_ is some quirky game somebody had heard at ComiCon was kinda funny, they think... So, a separate top 7800 at XYZ price-point might be a good idea, considering the two consoles are so negatively correlated on those variables... Happy Thanksgiving! 🍻

Here in Canada, _every_ Atari 2600 cartridge is less than five bucks: even in Retro gaming shops (not on sidewalks, not at garage sales, etc.) that whole generation of original hardware is in the "you can't even *give* it away" category. Short term, the release of the 2600+ could double the price around here, and they'd still be cheap.

The game that I never got was Defender II or Star Gate, which came out in 1984. I think The Empire Strikes Back is a better Defender-like game than Chopper Command.

Yes. Bump up the budget and Atari 7800 cartridges, please. Most of the launch titles can be had for cheap still sealed in boxes, loose would be even cheaper. It is really only the Activision/Absolute/Froggo games and late releases that are expensive.

Until now, lol. They mass produced many of these carts (millions) and this was a time when gaming was just for kids. Most of the games haven't held up well compared to the 8-16 bits. So it's basically a small Gen X nostalgia group that has any interest. I had a great time playing Kaboom against my cousin in the early 80's, River Raid, Pitfall, etc but there are only a handful worth revisiting imo.

Oh, man… not a single one of these games has decent music… I believe that not a single one has any music at all (unless, perhaps, I'm forgetting a 30 second "Game Over" ditty?). If it isn't depressing enough playing a game that has no possible ending other than your own death (in the context of a bleak, black-background world of endlessly respawning enemies at higher and higher levels of difficulty) the lack of music just adds to the prison-like aesthetic of the Atari era of gaming. No offense. Hey, hey… I said "no offense"!
@GenXGrownUp
@GenXGrownUp 7 ай бұрын
Hey, that doesn't just make it all better! 😉 "Music" is a construct - free your mind! Seriously, to me, the harsh square tones, blips, and bloops are like music to my ears. When the Atari tries to do music it's hit or miss, but the very texture of the audio from a VCS make me as happy as most "real" music. Same as the sound when I walk into an arcade: the sweet, sweet cacaphony.
