The Substance was WILD and unsettling. It’s a cautioned but recommended watch I’d say, it’s definitely body horror. SPOILER TO READERS: Oh, Brian, how can you have 'Civil War' on your top 10 list? That was my #1 WORST movie of the year and I saw a LOT of films last year. That film had plot holes big enough to drive a truck through. I did not believe that the press truck with PRESS written on the side would make it that far and arrive in D.C. safely with all of the carnage along the way, especially all of the vehicles that littered the landscape. Also, the president would never be in the White House and be assassinated like that if things got that bad. The Secret Service would move the president to another location or aboard Air Force One, any place with a global command center present. People in the theatre where I saw it were laughing at how ludicrous the climax was.

The Brutalist was a hit and miss for me. I went in thinking I would freaking love it - and alas, I left theaters feeling a bit let down. The movie on a technical level is without a doubt an achievement - the cinematography, the editing, and sound. Yes, it’s very well done and of course even more impressive when considering the budget with which Brady Corbet made it possible. However on the flip side, the narrative fell flat for me. To me, the journey of fictional visionary architect Laszlo Toth doesn’t feel like “the immigrant experience” to me. It is A - or one - immigrant experience, and I would have found it more impactful had it actually been based on a real life person. Not only that, there were strands in the narrative story telling that were introduced or somewhat build up only to fall flat or become abandoned by the end. I liked the first half better than the second half, and once we got to the epilogue I was wondering whether the ending would tie it together in a way that I would leave the theater feeling like this is a worthy movie I will remember and revisit in years to come. Upon first viewing , the epilogue felt disjointed, anticlimactic, and divorced from the overall tone of the movie. I will try and give this movie another shot down the line. Sometimes multiple viewings are necessary for either properly appreciating it or for the story telling to hit a vein it didn’t hit the first time. As for the performances, the one that stood out for me even more than Brody - and he was excellent no doubt - was Guy Pearce. I hope he receives the long elusive Oscar nomination 😊

I likely would have had "The Wild Robot" somewhere on my best if it had not been for seeing "Flow" later in the year. And it really scratched that itch I had with how much I enjoyed the early minutes of the film just watching the robot interact with the environment before getting to the more talky portion (Which I still very much enjoyed, don't get me wrong.), and "Flow" essentially giving me that film all the way and was quite a fascinating journey to watch itself really gave me something I didn't know I wanted more than I expected. It and "Ghost Cat Anzu" are some of my favorites of animation this year, but I still very much put "The Wild Robot" and "Transformers One" on my honorable mentions. Do see them if you can.

So disappointed Nosferatu isn't on your list. This film, The Substance and Dune 2 are the only three that blew me away. The Substance and Dune I was prepared for but not Nosferatu. I think Anora is highly overrated. I enjoyed it, but Best Picture? No. I don't agree that Sean Baker is one of the best filmmakers. I hated The Florida Project, except for Willem Dafoe's performance. I don't get all the awards for Anora, a mildly entertaining film but not a cinematic masterpiece, imo. I also had no interest in the story of a sex worker. Best Picture should go to something more cinematic, like The Brutalist, imo. I did enjoy The Challengers and am glad it's on your list, Brian! It's a very exciting film with a lot of sexual tension.

What are you doing at a Sean Baker film if you don't care to see the story of a sex worker? It's a prominent feature in like half of his films

Civil War is so grossly overrated that I have to re-evaluate whether I trust your opinion anymore. Absolutely belong nowhere near this list.

I loved The Wild Robot! It deserves to win the Oscar as best animated film. Challengers is another great movie.

It’s list season! Here are my top 10 of this year, keep in mind I’ve yet to see The Substance, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, and various other films on many end of the year lists. Either that or I just wasn’t as crazy about them as everyone else. Anyways, here’s the list- #10-My Old Ass: This is the most underrated film of 2024. Easily one of the sweetest, funniest, and most moving coming of age films I’ve seen in recent years. Anyone can watch this movie and get something out of it. Aubrey Plaza is a laugh riot in her small supporting role, the characters all feel like real people, and I was floored by the twist with Chad. See this movie asap if you haven’t. 9-Inside Out 2: Pixar is very hit-or-miss with sequels, but this is definitely one of their best. Not an ounce of the first film’s charm and power is lost, and it has one of the most accurate representations of a panic attack I’ve ever seen in a film. 8-Saturday Night: I’m not all that familiar with the original SNL cast, but as an aspiring actor, I really connected with the feeling of scrambling to get a show ready when it feels like everything’s going wrong. The ensemble cast, direction from the legendary Jason Reitman, and real-time pacing make this one of the most enjoyable films of the year. 7-A Real Pain: This reminds me a lot of The Holdovers, a story with a lot of laughs, heartache, and humanity, with one unbelievably great supporting performance. Eisenberg deserves his flowers as well, the dinner scene was just perfect. 6-The Wild Robot: Animated films as great as this don’t come very often, so they’re worth treasuring when they do. The Wild Robot is a simple story, but simply perfect. The animation is just gorgeous, the characters are lovable, and the music is spectacular. Between this, WALL-E, and The Iron Giant, I think animated films about a kindhearted robot making their way through nature are almost always amazing. 5-Dune: Part Two: Yeah, this really is that good. The direction and technical elements are somehow even better than the first, the story is thoroughly compelling, and while they’re some of the only people in the film who don’t get awards love, the actors give it their all. Chalamet and Butler are amazing, but I was really taken with Zendaya’s performance, especially her reaction to Paul’s betrayal, which is almost entirely facial acting. 4-A Complete Unknown: This is quite possibly my favorite musical biopic of all time. They usually follow a tried and true formula, that while perfectly fine, isn’t that exciting unless you’re already attached to the artist it’s about. James Mangold throws that aside with A Complete Unknown, which centers in on a place and time, telling a great narrative. It goes without saying the performances are amazing, and I really want to shout out Monica Barbaro who is outstanding as Joan Baez. Bob Dylan isn’t explored as a person very much, but I think that’s kind of the point, and the story, music, and other characters were more than enough to keep me invested. 3-Conclave: I’m kind of a normie this year, but that’s ok, because the audiences were right. Conclave is one of the best political dramas ever made. I’m not even a religious person, but the story of these men doing whatever it takes to get elected, including defying their faith, had me glued to my seat. The twist was pretty cool too, and I think the themes of unity despite political and religious differences is something we need now more than ever. 2-Anora: I’ve heard a lot of people say this isn’t worth the hype, and I am not one of those people whatsoever. This movie made me feel such a range of emotions, I was so entertained with Ani and Ivan’s playful chemistry, and then the comical search to find him. But when things start going wrong for Ani, I was moved to tears, especially in that heartbreaking final scene. Honestly, this is probably the best film of the year. But not my favorite. 1-Wicked: Sorry not sorry, I adored every last moment of Wicked. I’m a theater kid as much as I am a film nerd, and I couldn’t have asked for a better version of this musical on screen. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are every ounce as good in their roles as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. The production design and costumes are some of the best I’ve ever seen in my life, every beat of the story is given the time it needs, it’s just everything I wanted and more. I think there were 6 different times I got chills watching this movie. The tracking shot in No One Mourns the Wicked, Cynthia belting The Wizard and I, the spinning library during Dancing Through Life, the Ozdust dance between Elphaba and Glinda, everything turning pink at the end of Popular, and every second of the Defying Gravity sequence. There are some objective flaws in the cinematography and vfx, but I could really care less with how much I loved the film. Wicked may not be the best film of 2024, but it will always be my favorite.

Challengers is by far not just the most overrated of the year, or even of the decade, but of all time. I can't stand it and I'm glad it's not getting any awards recognition. The story was a mess and it was like seeing a drawing of zig-zag! They were so many endless better movies of that year that it's not funny.

I finally saw Babygirl and, while I acknowledge that it is a GOOD film, I also found it to be EXTREMELY problematic. The plot centers around a boss who preys on her younger employee to the point where she literally stalks him. And at no point does she pay any real consequence. She keeps her job, she keeps her marriage. It’s framed as an empowerment journey for her when she’s actually liable for sexual harassment.

I don’t get the love for BABYGIRL. I watched it last week and I can see why Nicole Kidman probably isn’t going to be nominated. The movie lacked any character development. I never cared about the characters; they do stupid unbelievable stuff in the movie. In one scene on his first day as an intern, Nicole Kidman asks the guy how he subdued a loose dog. He replied that he gave it a cookie, then asks if she wants a cookie. No way would that fly between an intern and his superior. The movie tried to be provocative, but was actually dull. Brian isn’t a fan of animated movies. He thought that THE WILD ROBOT was really moving and the best animated movie that he has seen in years. He obviously hasn’t seen ROBOT DREAMS. I watched it on Hulu last month. What a profound animated feature about the death of a friendship and moving on. I was really moved by it.

I love how no one is listing “Wicked” as a top 10 film of the year just because it’s mainstream and therefore not up to par for cinephiles. I’m a cinephile, and “Wicked” was absolutely a top 10 film of the year.
