I can't remember most of the Hammer movies but what I DO remember was staying up late with my mum who loved them every Saturday night for Creature Feature. This was in the 1970s. They usually had a presenter talk about actors etc before the movie.

Peter Cushing will always be *my* Van Helsing & Dr. Frankenstein 👍 There are so many good ones but Oliver Reed in Curse of the Werewolf is a stand out in my memory from childhood. Bob Wilkins/Creature Features showed Hammer films as well as older classic B&W horror films every weekend in the late 60s/early 70s. That & Outer Limits, Twilight Zone & Night Gallery was my gateway into the horror genre.

This is a wonderful channel. Not just the content but your enthusiasm is very infectious. It’s very gratifying to see a young guy loving these films which I loved when I was young, (and still do) watching them late night in the UK on a Saturday on the BBC when my parents had gone to bed on an 18 inch colour tv set in 1977 with all the lights off. These movies have definitely proved to be enduring classics. Good to see Brides of Dracula on your list, which was the very first Hammer horror I saw; terrified me. If you haven’t already, give The Devil Rides Out and Quatermass and the Pit a go. Anyway, thanks for reading and thanks for your superb content.

@@davepx1 Thank you, Dave P. I'm thinking that Nigel Kneale might have read, "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, seeing that "Quatermass and the Pit" had leanings towards cosmic horror. That story was also decades before Erich Von Danikin's "Chariots of the Gods."
@davepx1
@davepx1 Жыл бұрын
@@walterfechter8080 There's also an early 1950s comic horror tale that he may have encountered in which an unearthed ancient human skeleton affects the locals. He cited contemporary race issues as his immediate inspiration (and of course the nazi episode was fairly recent). But he wove it all into a masterful narrative which both the BBC and Hammer brought to life admirably.

@@rickykilby4672 I feel like it's a good demonstration of his only real weakness as an actor; he's good at making the audience understand what makes his characters tick; but he's not very compelling when the audience is not supposed to understand what's up with his character. It's a problem in Gorgon (not the worst problem; that would be the Gorgon's snotty idiot of a boyfriend, who manages to make a less than compelling Peter Cushing character with muttonchop sideburns seem like Cary Grant by comparison); it's a problem in the first half of the Ghoul; it's possibly a problem in his Dr. Who movies.

My introduction to Hammer horror was through weirdly Doctor Who. The show in the 70s had a very gothic horror vibe which was inspired by these films and in the last few years I’ve nose dived into them. They’re my favourite type of film. My favourites have to be The Mummy 1959, The Mummy’s Shroud, The Gorgon and Curse of Frankenstein. For me horror films are at their best when they’re oozing with atmosphere and tension and creep factor. Not necessarily how likely it is to give you a heart attack like most horror is now.

'Dracula Has Risen from the Grave' is also my favourite Hammer Dracula film. I first bought it on VHS when I was 9 years old, and I still have it. I collect Hammer memorabilia and have them all on DVD and BR!

Great choices! It makes me want to rewatch them. Yes, I always thought Dracula has Risen from the Grave was brilliant- I didn’t realise it was underrated. Another lesser known Hammer film that I loved was Kiss of the Vampire - the music by James Bernard was wonderful. Also, Frankenstein Created Woman. There are just so many when you start thinking about it!

Great video! Loved your enthusiasm and passion for these movies. I've seen most of them over the years, but it's been quite a while since I last saw one. The Gorgon is one of my favourites, I was very impressed by it when I saw it on tv at the age of 12, on a trip to London (perfect setting!) in 1971. Your video made me want to rewatch them all!

Great list! "Curse of Frankenstein" is my favorite Hammer horror too. Just watched it to celebrate 100 days to Halloween! I enjoy all of the Cushing Frankenstein movies. "Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell" is a lot of fun too -- it takes place in an insane asylum, there's a little girl who feeds her doll pieces of human flesh, and the monster is played by Darth Vader's body actor, David Prowse!

It's actually one of the more creepy Hammers, the dark woods and that dark isolated castle with the Medusa in there. So atmpospheric.

Great Video.. Entertaining and well documented. Hammer Films actually are very well crafted and.. Usually very Campy and Enjoyable. R. Polanki ( The Great R. Polanski) made some years ago his own homage to Hammer Studios "The Fearless Vampires Killers". Don't miss this crazy and wonderful film if you have not seen it yet!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I loved The Gorgon. For meg, the practical effect monster didn't interfere at all with my enjoyment of the film. Having watched many horror films from and growing up in the 60s/70s, I was pretty used to seeing that kind of thing and thought nothing of it. Great video. I'm learning a lot.

I grew up on Hammer Horror movies! Saturday screenings in my home town cinema in the Sixties. One of the things that impressed me about them was the richness of colour: the saturated greens, browns and of course reds. This is something that even the BluRay remasters haven't quite managed to get right. So many choices but The Devil Rides Out, Rasputin, the Mad Monk, and The Witches are three favourites. Quatermass and the Pit is another, despite the terrible FX segment around its midway point. And I still think Ollie Reed's Werewolf is one of the best ever werewolf movies.

Claude Rains Phantom of the Opera is the best. Classic performance. Can't beat the team of Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee. Bela Lugosi will always be my favourite Dracula though. Brides of Dracula was the first Hammer film I saw. Watched it with my Dad in 1987 when I was 4 years old. I'm from Whitby, UK, and was always obsessed with Dracula & vampires 🧛‍♂️

There was a time ... a wonderful storytelling with the best visual art and craft time. It was Hammer late fifties and sixties essential masterpieces time. You showed it in many of your personal top 10 best list ... and I agree and see a coherent sense of class and style. My own first cinema theater horror movie sreening in my life was at age 11 with my parents and big brother. A double programe featuring "Kiss of the vampire" ( Don Sharp ) and " Evil of Frankenstein " ( Freddy Francis ). Since that night I am a young Hammer Fan ... 70 years old .

I'm half way through watching every Hammer movie (there are about 180), there are some hidden gems that are Thriller's rather than horrors. Here's my top ten so far, starting with the best: 1. Curse of Frankenstein 2. Horror of Dracula 3. Yesterday's Enemy 4. Taste of Fear 5. Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde 6. Hell is a City 7. Frankenstein Created Woman 8. Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires 9. The Revenge of Frankenstein 10. The Damned Cpt Kronos would be joint 10th.

Fantastic top 10 and i liked the way you tried to stay away from the franchise's and just pick one from each. I do have a soft spot for Scars of Dracula mainly because i like how violent Dracula is in that movie. The Vampire lovers is also a favorite as it was the first ever movie with nudity that i watched as a young boy. Quatermass and the pitt would be in my top 10, loved the video buddy. Mark.
