Kinship is surreal. I've been following Jón Aldará since his time with Barren Earth and he's come a long way as a vocalist (in my opinion anyways). I think, for me, he gives that extra little nuance that elevates an otherwise absolutely brilliant record to... well....surreal. Definitely my album of the year. By far.

While there are some on there I wouldn't include in my top lists, I can definitely see why others would. I totally agree that Iotunn, Counting Hours, and Mother of Graves were true highlights of the year. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention Gaerea's Coma. That album was amazing and showcases the best modern black metal has to offer IMO. If you want something that's amazing and also easy to listen to and approach then I'd recommend Caligula's Horse - Charcoal Grace. A very good progressive metal album that rivals some of the best albums the band has ever produced. Jim Grey's voice is something to behold if you are unfamiliar with the band. Cheers guys!

Iotunn is number 1. Tribulation may not be as heavy but still metal and as a whole...would be number 2. Super surprised that there is hardly any mention of Wormwood! Number 3. Normally I am pretty varied in genres. Too me, this year was where death metal shined. Undeath, 200 Stabwounds, Abramelin, Cognitive , Nile, Job For A Cowboy, Laceration. A Wake in Providence I came back to a lot. Also, I forgot how good that new Judas Priest is. Solid year overall but looking at my last year playlist, not nearly as varied for me.

There were not as many highs as past years (2021, 2022) for me but the overall quality was so good that it was one of the harder years do decide what should be on my top list. A bit of a surprising top 10 tbh, even though I think none of the bands are new to me having seen the monthly wrap-ups ^^ I got 7 of these on vinyl, would have been 8 if it was possible to get my hands on the Devenial Verdict one. Thou and the happy synth-drummachine-bm you can keep :P My picks would have included Amiensus, Ulcerate, Yoth Iria, Sinistro, Selbst and Vitriol in addition to 4 of the ones on your list.

Love the music on kinship but I can’t get passed the vox. It kills it for me. Just not my jam. But I love their creativity, songwriting ability and composition. I feel like they picked up the baton that Opeth dropped years ago. I can see them getting huge.
