Dial of Destiny getting an Score nomination over Across the Spider-Verse is a damn travesty
@laurajones17736 ай бұрын
I agree. Dial of Destiny is not one of John Williams’ best scores. Across the Spiderverse is my favorite score from last year and deserves at least a nomination. The score is the heart and soul of that movie. I think it didn’t get nominated because the Academy hates that movie for some reason. They hate it so much that not only was the movie only nominated in the Best Animated Feature category, it didn’t even win the Best Animated Feature category despite it winning at Critics Choice, Annie, PGA and ACE Eddie Award. I guess Spiderverse didn’t win the Oscar just because it’s a sequel. The Academy hates awarding sequels in that category unless it’s Toy Story.

I loved the nomination for the late Robbie Robertson for Best Original Score, as well as that film’s nomination for Best Original Song. Speaking of, I’m okay with Williams’ nomination for Best Score. They were probably voting with the mind that Williams was retiring (though now we know he apparently has no plans for that) so they weren’t gonna let him go without a nomination and plus, it’s John Williams. If it were any other composer I would be like, ‘really?’ But since it’s John Williams I’m okay.

I thought the holdovers was like all these new songs that sample old hits instead of coming up with something new. They’re fine to listen to since they have the foundation of something’s that’s already established as good, but you can’t really connect to the song because it just feels lazy. It has 1000% more heart than any of those songs, but to me has just as little originality. I definitely get how it might scratch an itch for a lot of people, but personally I wished it brought something new to the table rather than feeling like a giant homage to movies that are frankly far superior.

Suzume should have taken Elemental's place for Best Animated Feature. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem would also have been a decent choice. But I liked Elemental better than a lot of people did, so it doesn't count as one of my five worst nominations. My own four worst: 1) Diane Warren for Best Original Song, a nomination for a movie with a ridiculous premise. (Why would anyone want to make a time investment in the story of the creation of a Cheetos brand??) My choice: "She Be Mine" from The Color Purple. 2) John Williams for Best Original Score. My choice: Joe Hisaichi, The Boy and the Heron. 3) Carey Mulligan for Best Actress. My choice: Greta Lee, Past Lives. 4) Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for Best Adapted Screenplay, because darn it, that is an original story, not an adaptation of anything. My choice: Kelly Freemon Craig, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.

It's not a good story with an engaging narrative arc. Perfect Days looks wonderful. Can't wait to see that. Did you ever see Tokyo Sonata? One of my favourite films of all time. Can't agree more about Diane Warren. Come on give over Diane, you don't need an oscar when you pretty dominated the charts in the 1990s. It would be like the Beatles wanting an Oscar - they would never need them. Having an oscar is not going to increase their status as a band. The Oscars are in real trouble - especially with the critical younger demographic. One way of saving the show would be to stop giving nominations to obscure movies in the Song category. Unless the song has particularly strong artistic merit in the context of the movie, go for the songs and movies that people have actually heard and seen. That way they have a reason to watch the show - for the performances. In recent years, RRR and HER were excellent choices for nominees and winners. I would also love to hear your views on what is going wrong with the Oscars, and how can the show be improved and stay relevant.

Diane Warren clearly has supporters inside the music branch of the Academy (that's why she keeps getting nominated over-and-over). This was her 15th nomination and also her 7th straight nomination in a row! - The problem is that her songs for the films she writes for are the only nominee for that film and because those films don't get big distribution, a lot of people almost don't see that film or hear the song and also the song isn't even a minor or sleeper hit. Out of her 15 nominations, only 5 films had (at least) multiple nominations (besides her): "Con Air", "Armageddon", "Music of the Heart", "Peral Harbor", and "RBG". What she needs to do to have a chance to win is: Get on a film that could likely be a Best Picture contender and/or largely seen by the Academy and Write/Co-Write nearly all the songs for the film (2 of the songs could get nominated).

Totally agree with you about Paul GIamatti. I am happy for Cillian Murphy, but I didn't come away from Oppenheimer thinking he should win an Oscar. I did with Giamatti in the Holdovers, especially considering he should have won years ago for Sideways.

Im so sad for dianne warren, i know her recent songs are terrible. But she is a legend, she is an amazing songwriter. I think she was close of winning with "till it happens to you". Such a meaningful son. Cowritten by lady gaga. Also the performance with abuse survivers was an all timer in the oscars. I think that song was worthy of winning

Honestly - I said this before, Diane Warren deserved to win the Oscar for her song "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from the movie "Burlesque." She won the Golden Globe with this song, was nominated for a Grammy, but oddly enough, this year she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. I hope that Diane Warren works on a good film this year and that she can finally win the Oscar for Best Song - cause all these past nominations are already off limits.

For me, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now easily should have won, and that was her first nomination too.

A song that should have been nominated: Can't Catch Me Now by Olivia Rodrigo from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Not only a really good song but one that really captures the storyline and themes of the movie it was in.

I had to change some nominations I would get rid of both Domingo and Cooper in actor for Di Caprio and Teo Yoo. I would have nominated Doming in supporting for The Color Purple (amazing performance!) instead of Sterling K. Brown and also, imho, Charles Melton instead of Downey Jr. Penelope Cruz for Ferrari and Julianne Moore for May December in Supporting Actress, instead of Blunt and Ferrera. Also, in the same category, I would have definitely loved to have Sandra Huller for Zone of interest replacing Foster. Natalie Portman in actress to replace Bening. Obviously, I would have got rid and Indiana Jones in score for The Boy and The Heron and Society of the snow in sound, instead of the Creator. For the scripts, I would have preferred Killers of the flower moon in Adapted, instead of Barbie, and Monster in Original Screenplay instead of Maestro. And to end big, May December for Picture, getting rid of Maestro.

I agree. Very mediocre performance. Greta Lee and Margot Robbie are more deserving of being nominated than her.

I think a best director nom should’ve gone to Celine Song. Sorry, but I think Poor Things was a poor movie. It had good technicals and good acting, but I feel like the absurdism and surrealism was almost done in a cliche way. I truly don’t think the cinematography was that good. Like pinhole shots and blurry filters and bad cgi backdrops and skies really don’t make it worthy imo. The acting was technically very good for all actors, but I think pretty much everything about the film is overrated. Not to mention the disgusting morality of the film (constant depictions of pedophilic people having sex with a baby/girl-minded person, and the idea that women should basically whore themselves in order to break out from being controlled by men). Lilly Gladstone and Sandra Hüller both deserved the Oscar over Emma Stone I believe. I think that the gravitas that both of those actresses were able to give to their films with FAR more subtle and skilled (imo) acting than Emma Stone both deserved the Oscar more. Stone gave a good performance, no doubt, but it never screamed “better than Gladstone or Hüller” to me. I think her performance was very over the top and physical, but I think there are other actresses who could do that. I don’t think the same for the other two actresses. Back to directing, I don’t think Jorgos deserved the nomination (I know, crucify me), and I think Song could easily have replaced him. And honestly, I thought that Zone of interest overstayed its welcome and kind of failed as a film in its failure to ever diversify what’s going on in the movie. It was a great premise and I was absolutely shocked for the first 30 minutes. Once that wore off, i was kind of waiting for something to actually happen. Some kind of plot to appear, anything. I think the style of the film would work far better for a 30 minute short film, not a 1hr 45min feature length film. Even though his directorial vision is impressive, it starts to seem a bit empty the longer the movie goes on. Like, we get it, Jews are being massacred in the background and the characters are totally apathetic. It’s horrible…but does it need nearly two hours straight to show that? So I think Glazer could’ve been bumped out for Song. Truly, Past Lives is one of the most beautiful and impressive films I’ve ever seen. Also, very glad Gerwig wasn’t nominated…she has great films that absolutely deserve nominations, Barbie isn’t one of them. Give me Celine Song and Justine Triet over her any day for this year’s films.

I’m gonna be negative and only do my top 5 worst: 5. *Annette Benning - actress* (She gave a great performance but such a boring nomination, should’ve been Greta Lee, Margot or Portman) 4. *Maestro- picture* (So many better options, especially Spiderverse and May December) 3. *America Ferrera- supporting actress* (She was fine, but Julianne Moore was incredible in May December and many others were also more deserving than Ferrera) 2. *Flamin Hot- Song* (The academy is making me hate Diane Warren even tho I know nothing about her separated from the Oscars. Am I Dreaming, one of the Flora and Son songs or the Olivia Rodrigo Hunger Games song should’ve been nominated) 1. *Dial of Destiny- Score* (This was way worse than American Fiction also getting in, but both should’ve been replaced with Spiderverse and The Boy and the Heron)

I agree that Elemental should be replaced but the movie that should take its place is Suzume. Perfect Days was a good choice . This movie grew on me and the music is so nostalgic. Maestro’s screenplay should be replaced by Perfect Days. The story wasn’t much but it executes well. Willem Defoe should be nominated than Mark Ruffalo. Indiana Jones 5 being nominated is so stupid. Against Into The Spider-Verse and The Boy And The Heron? Really? The Holdovers is a good movie. Diana Warren should be BANNED for being nominated for an Oscar. After all, she got an Honorary Oscar. Anatomy Of A Fall is also a good film. Golda wasn’t the worst movie in my opinion. It was ok. Past Lives is an ok film. Just that the ending was weak and boring

I think Past Lives’ ending was strong, actually! Perhaps I was more attuned to its intended trajectory. I was holding all of these emotions and when I reached the ending absolutely just bursted and was crying along with the character. I think its intended impact was more of a silent killer kind of thing--a sudden snap and all the emotions come out pouring.

Williams should’ve received Oscars for Catch Me If You Can (2002) and for HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). He was nominated… BTW, 2002 went to Frida and 2004 to Finding Neverland. They were good, but Williams’s scores were better (IMO).
@laurajones17736 ай бұрын
I don’t even remember the scores to Frida and Finding Neverland. Catch Me if You Can and especially Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban are much better scores and scores I can remember. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the best score in the Harry Potter franchise. Also, I thought The Incredibles score was also better and more memorable than Finding Neverland’s score. However, it wasn’t even nominated.
