I haven’t heard anyone in a long time talk about coming out of the closet either which I think is progress. That’s such a dated term as though everyone is presumed heterosexual and then we have to reveal if we’re not. I think that most people in society don’t assume other people’s sexuality anyone which is great. Because being gay is nothing to be ashamed of or something that someone needs to hide.
@BTURNER19612 жыл бұрын
@@TimothyMorigeau There definitely is progress. and a lot of it, but that assumption of yours depends on geography, age, and religion and culture. It may never be something that someone needs to be ashamed of, and still be something that someone needs to hide - at least until they have been assured a safe place to go and safe people to be around. Gays and transexuals still have bullying, abuse and self harm secondary to bullying and abuse to contend with. I’m surprised Anderson Cooper brought that question, being a gay man himself. It just seems like someone of the LGBTQ community would want to focus on something related to that artist’s work and not something that they themselves have likely had to address over and over while their career and life interests get put on the back burner. George Michael and Freddie Mercury were both artists who said repeatedly in interviews to the effect of, “Ask me about my music, ask me about my work…those are things that are interesting to me and I think are interesting to my REAL fans.” So much lost time of interviews spent having to answer about their sexuality when we could have so much more recorded for future generations about their music and life goals, and let their private life be their private life. David Bowie once said that it’s the same 8 or 9 pieces of info that get recycled over and over, with bisexuality being one of them for him, and that it takes a really skilled interviewer to ask about their art and career in a way that no one else has before. It just seems like asking about someone’s sexuality is never done in an attempt to open a conversation about it but to get the most likes and views on an interview.

Some of these interviews I have never seen or heard of and I couldn’t be more disgusted or disappointed at some of the interviewers I USED to respect. My reply to people saying it's a choice is to say "There's entire religions that call gays abominations. There's entire countries that throw gays in prison, or pass laws to kill gays or torture them or force them into conversion therapy. There's literal people, pastors included, who stand on the pulpit and demand that gays be literally executed all the while crooning on and on about the love of God. There's people saying gays shouldn't be able to get married, adopt, hold down a job, be able to be denied healthcare services based on religious exemption, etc. And you think people would CHOOSE to be treated like this?"

It's really amazing to see many of the comments taken aback at some of the questions the celebrities struggled with not that long ago. It's also a bit of a concern that younger people may not adequately grasp just how recently the LGTBQ community had to struggle with these issues. It's great that so many things we worried about even just ten years ago are now dealt with such dismissal, but we also need to comprehend - almost to the point that we need to expect - that the steps we've made forward could easily be taken back, as well. There are still countries in the world, some of them vacation hot spots, that still criminalize homosexuality with penalties up to capital punishment. Simply being American will not deter these cultures from sentencing them with their own laws. Comfort and our own victories don't mean the fight is over. Far from it.

"Well, that's their problem, though." "No, of course not." (In response to, "You don't care?") "If you have an egg, and you open it from the outside, only death comes out. To not be afraid of alienation from the rest of humanity and actively distinguish yourself (something that goes against numerous human instincts) is the bravest act I can imagine. Historically most cultures didn't have problems with it. Only eversince the hegemony of the Institutionalized form of Christianity in the early Middle Ages did it become a problem.
